Hard drive randomly shows up as empty (sometimes the files on it are shown but not accessible), after waking from sleep. Fixes itself after restarting

I've been pulling my hair out trying to find out the cause of this weird problem. Sometimes when my PC wakes from sleep everything on my toshiba 3tb HDD is either gone or inaccessible, windows cannot run any programs or move/read any files on it, but everything returns to normal after a restart. I'm using the hard drive as a secondary drive with an SSD as the boot drive. Smart test shows the HDD is still in very good condition.
