Since posting someone suggested HTPC, Server or Linux box.

Every night at exactly 11:57, Windows will make the *Unplugged Something* sound and the applications on my two monitors will switch to the opposite monitor.

Microsoft Windows 10 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560

Both monitors are actually televisions plugged in via DVI>VGA adapters. I have no idea how long this has been happening, but it's been going on for a while. I didn't realize it was at exactly the same time, though, until a few days ago.

Until I realized tha tit was happening at the same time every night, I thought maybe one of my cables was loose, but no everything is secure.

Nothing strange is in Task Scheduler either.

Absolutely any idea?

How do i fix audio coming from both my speakers and headphones?

I have some random headphones that do work, but whenever i plug them into my computer I hear audio coming from my speakers and headphones. How can I disable this feature? I tried reinstalling drivers, I got a new mobo and installed the drivers for it. Before that, I did not have problems I would just switch the default speaker in playback devices, but I no longer see the headphones. What can I do? I've reinstalled the drivers almost 10 times.

Blue and green lines are appearing on my screen and resulting in my computer freezing (I just built this pc a few days ago)

So, I just built a pc, and yesterday I was playing pubg for a few hours, then when I was done playing, green and blue lines appeared on the monitor, and my computer froze. I restarted computer, but once it loaded up, the blue and green lines appaeared right away and the computer froze. I forced it off with the power button, then turned it back on, and managed to type in my password and get to the homescreen, then for some reason I opened task manager, but right after doing it, the blue and green lines appeared, then the screen went black, went back to the homescreen with green and blue lines, then it went black again, but the task manager tab appeared over the black screen, and it said it wasn't responding, so I just turned the pc off, and asked for help on pcmasterrace and buildapc (I forgot about this subreddit), then I went to bed.

Today, I realized I made a huge mistake when building my first pc. I accidently put two fans into he case that were facing outwards, so it was blowing air out instead of in, so my pc could've been overheating.

I just put the fans in the place they should be in, and I took my graphics card out and put it back into its original place, then turned my computer on, but it is still having the green and blue lines appear on my monitor, along with it freezing. I took this picture of it occuring from today when I tried to turn it on

[This is my build](finished part list for now http://ift.tt/2wgNsKn).

I think my lack of cooling in the computer resulted in the graphics card overheating, and somehow ruining it, which is messing up its display. Would that be a good assumption to make, and I should replace my gtx 1060, or could the problem be something else?

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: When my pc was turning on, I went to boot options before it loaded windows 10, and in the boot options, I had no problems whatsoever, but once I exited out of boot options and went back to windows 10, it started happening.

Computer will no longer boot after shutting it down

All of a sudden just yesterday night i shutdown my pc before going to bed but none of the leds that always turn off in my pc turn off and also the pc was still running after shutdown. I gave it a minute or so and it would not shutdown so i flicked the switch on the back of the psu and it turned off. Next day today it wont turn on. I unplugged and replugged the power cable in and out and it turned on. I then had to restart my pc to go into the bios and test somethings but the pc would not restart and it had the same problem as yesterday. I then tried all the methods i tried to get my pc to work today and it would not work. I then try taking out the cmos battery and it worked. I was then using my pc as usual and i needed to go to the store forgetting that if i turn my pc off it will not turn back on so i turn it off and then realize my mistake. I try turning it back on and nothing. I then try jump starting the pc to see if the psu was bad even though all the motherboard leds were on and the jump test was good even with my cable mod 24 pin as extension cable that i use but it still wont turn on. Any fixes?

Restarted computer, now takes 3+ minutes to get to windows loading screen

So, my computer has worked for about 2 years with no issues. Ive built it from the ground up, have 24 gb of ram, windows is on a SSD (more than 1/2 empty), 9 gb of hdd, and 1080 gtx graphics card, mobo is z78-plus.

Today i restarted the computer after leaving it running for a couple days, and at first i tbought it wasnt starting at all. Did all the troubleshooting steps and nothing changed. The only change came when i called tech support and as the lady answered the computer finished booting. After that i had to turn it off again and plug in all the drives. But upon starting it still took 3+ minutes to load.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on with my computer?

Description of problem

When I play games such as World of Warcraft or Playerunknown's Battlegrounds it randomly shuts off like it is restarting. Not properly, but as if the power goes and instantly turns back on as if the power returns to it. I have tried to figure out if it is due to overheating, but it doesn't seem to be.

When this issue began

About 4-5 months ago

Recurring issue

Yes

Date of purchase

No

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

I can't 100% make it do it consistantly. Sometimes I can play those games without any problems what so ever, and other days it keeps recurring. I can go a week without it happening, and I can go a day where I can barely play the game for 5 minutes at a time.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

I have tried to make sure that it is not due to overheating that is causing the problem that makes the computer shut off, but I am not that tech savy regarding computers. So I have honestly not tried much.

MacBook Pro Wifi stops working but works if I stop and start it

I have a new MBP. The problem I'm having is that maybe once or twice every couple of hours, the wifi at home will get so bad it basically doesn't work. If I disconnect and reconnect, it works at normal speeds again. I haven't had the time to test this at other locations (cause it happens randomly every few hours, so it's hard to reproduce), but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what the problem is? I do use a Bluetooth mouse if that matters somehow in terms of effecting the signal. My brother uses an ethernet cable, but he doesn't have any problems.

Computer: MacBook Pro 2017 15'.

Using 15m HDMI cable. Image loads up during boot up, loses picture when login screen should appear. Switching to 2m HDMI cable bring the picture up. What is wrong?

Using :

a Palit 1080ti GPU Sony 1080/4K TV screen (neither 4k or 1080p work, image shows if I use shorter cable)

Worked before with 10m cable too. Is the cable too long for this image?

Is there a setting to give more power to the HDMI port maybe?

UPDATE and another question at the end:

I can't, I'm changing out the Wired Steam Link setup in my lounge to a HDMI/USB repeater setup, failure not an option.

I've managed to get it working at 2160p 60hz

With Sony TVs there is an option to

'Enhance 4K signal - displays high quality HDMI signals on HDMI inputs 2 and 3 on the back of the TV. Select this option if your device supports High Quality HDMI formats such as: 4K 60p 4:2:0 10bit, 4:4:4, 4:2:2.'

Or

Have 'Standard Format'

What's weird is that was in my TV in my room, which is the same TV I'm using now, had this option enabled when using a 10m cable with the same specs. It was also enabled for the Amazon Fire TV (4k version). But with this, having the enchanted option on, it wouldn't give a signal.

Turning it off seems to have made it work and I am getting 2160p with 60hz.

Now I'm wondering what this option even does if the picture looks so good with it off.

Any ideas?

Losing video input when gaming

Hi /r/techsupport, so since last night I'm currently experiencing issues with losing video input when trying to game. It first happened randomly when I was mid race in Assetto Corsa, I randomly lost video input and heard a Windows pop up error sound. I had no way to go back to my desktop so I had to hard reset my PC and everything is working fine on. So I try once again to go back to racing and once my race loads I lose video input again and hear the Windows pop up sound again. I'm thinking WTF. So next boot I try to play some Witcher 3 and once the game loads up to the menu I lose input and get the Windows error sound. So the next boot I end up trying Minecraft and for some odd reason I'm able to play that. So I do some Google searching and see it may be a GPU or PSU issue but I hope that isn't the case.

Some of the solutions I've tried were switching out input cables and took out my GPU and put it back in. I'm currently not connected to the internet on this PC due to being over a data cap so I'm unable to check for a driver update.

My specs are: ASUS Z-170 Pro Gaming i5-6600K(Stock clock atm) Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200MHz Gigabyte GTX 970 Xtreme Gaming EVGA Supernova NEX650G 80+ Gold

Rig is only a little over a year old but I'm hoping this is a driver issue in which I can check tomorrow when my data resets.

I am using an active DVI-Display port cable that I purchased off Amazon from Tripp Lite.

If it weren't running at 144, I would assume a pin was bent or that the cable was defective, screenshots provided:

Automatic protections in Android: Q&A with a security expert

Editor's note: The Android security team works to keep more than two billion users safe, and with the release of Android Oreo, they’ve rolled out some new security protections. We sat down with Adrian Ludwig, Director of Android Security to learn about his team, their approach to security, and what Oreo’s new protections mean for people who use and love Android.

Keyword: Talk to us a bit about what your team does.

Adrian: We build security features for Android that help keep the whole ecosystem safe. Our software engineers write code that encrypts user data, helps find security bugs faster, prevents bugs from becoming security exploits, and finds applications that are trying to harm users or their information.

How do you build these protections?

It starts with research. Because security is constantly evolving, our teams have to understand today’s issues, in Android and elsewhere, so we can provide better security now and in the future. Researchers in and out of Google are like detectives: they find new stuff, work to understand it deeply, and share it with the broader security community.

We then use those findings to make our protections stronger. We’re focused on tools like Google Play Protect and efforts like “platform hardening,” incremental protections to the Android platform itself. We’re also starting to apply machine learning to security threats, an early stage effort that we’re really excited about.

The final step is enabling all Android users to benefit from the protections. I’m really proud of the work our team has done with Google Play Protect, for example. Every day, it monitors more than 50 billion apps in Play, other app marketplaces, and across the web for potentially unsafe apps. If it finds any, we’ll prevent people from installing them and sometimes remove them from users’ phones directly. Users don’t need to do anything—this just works, automatically.

What are the challenges to protecting Android?

In security, we often talk about the trade-off between usability and protection. Sometimes, you can protect a device more effectively if there are certain things users can’t do on your device. And security is always much easier when things are predictable: for instance when all of the devices you are protecting are built the same way and can basically do the same thing.

But, Android security is different because the ecosystem is so diverse. The variety of use cases, form factors, and users forces us to be open-minded about how we should secure without limiting Android’s flexibility. We can’t possibly protect Android users with a single safeguard—our diversity of protections reflects the diversity in the Android ecosystem.

What are some of the new ways you’re protecting users in Android Oreo (not in robo- speak, please)?

Hang on, I gotta turn on Google Translate.

There are a … 0101100110 … sorry … a bunch! We’ve invested significantly in making it easier to update devices with security “patches,” fixes for potential safety problems, more commonly known as vulnerabilities. As a sidenote, you may have heard about “exploits.” If a vulnerability is a window, an exploit is a way to climb through it. The vast majority of the time, we’ll patch a vulnerability before anyone can exploit it. We have a project called Treble that makes it easier for us to work with partners and deliver updates to users. We want to close the window (and add some shutters) as quickly as possible.

We’ve also worked to improve verified boot, which confirms the device is in a known good state when it starts up, further hardened the Android kernel, which makes sure that hackers can’t change the way that code executes on a device, and evolved Seccomp which limits the amount of code that is visible to hackers.  Basically, we’re moving all the windows higher so any open ones are harder to climb through.

You announced Google Play Protect earlier this year. Tell us a bit about that and why it’s important for Android users?

For several years, we’ve been building “security services” which periodically check devices for potential security issues, allow Google and/or the user to review the status, and then use that information to protect the device. These services interact with Google Play in real-time to help secure it, hence the name “Google Play Protect.”

Our goal with Google Play Protect is to make sure that every user and every device has constant access to the best protections that Google can provide. Those protections are easy to use (ironically, for many people, Google Play Protect is so easy to use that they didn’t even know it was turned on!) and they benefit from everything Google knows about the security of Android devices.

Google Play Protect isn’t available just for users with Oreo -- it guards any device with Google Play Services, running Android Gingerbread, or later.

Updates are a challenge with Android, especially in regard to security. Why is that so hard? What are you doing to improve it?

What makes Android so cool and unique—its flexibility and openness—also presents a really big security challenge. There is a broad and diverse range of devices running Android, operated by a complex collection of partners and device manufacturers around the world. It’s our responsibility to make it easy for the entire ecosystem to receive and deploy updates, but the ecosystem has to work together in order to make it happen. One approach to the problem is to make updates easier through technical changes, such as Project Treble. Another is to work with partners to better understand how updates are produced, tested, and delivered to users.

What’s the toughest part of your job?

Prioritization. Often we need to balance researching super cool, extremely rare issues with more incremental maintenance of our existing systems. It’s really important that we are laser-focused on both; it’s the only way we can protect the entire ecosystem now and longer-term.

What’s your favorite part?

I’m amazed and humbled by how many people use Android as their primary (or only) way to connect to the internet and to the broader world. We’ve still got a ton of work to do, but I’m incredibly proud of the role my team has played in making those connections safe and secure.

Ok, last question: How do you eat your Oreos?

In one bite. (But I can’t handle the Double Stufs).

I Heard My Samsung Galaxy S6 Phone Camera Turn On Randomly Earlier

My Samsung Galaxy S6 camera is quasi-broken and had been for a while. When you activate it, it makes a kind of "grinding" noise and takes a few seconds to focus.

Earlier today at work, my phone was on my desk and I heard it start making that sound. All my apps were closed, and the camera "viewfinder"/screen was not on. Everything looked normal.

Is is possible/probable this an app spying on me? Whom would you prime suspects be? If not, what could cause the camera to randomly turn on?

Thanks!

How to change PC settings to default use HDD

I just got a new PC and it has a 128GB SSD and whenever I install games or programs it defaults to the SSD and not to mention the Temp folders filling up like crazy (20gb+). I was wondering if there was a way to make it default to HDD. (Running windows 10).

And is it possible to just move the program files(x86) to the HDD since the HDD doesn't have any program files? (The SSD has 128 GB while the HDD is 1 TB).

Question about Windows update

Hey guys ! So basically I have 2 questions about all the automatic windows 10 updates.

Because windows often updated my system without any notice, and then at the morning, Instead of starting working I needed to wait 30-40 min for windows to update I disabled "windows update" service, as probably most people at this point.

  1. Is it a good way to prevent windows 10 from automatically updating, or is it harmful in a long run ?
  2. If you guys think that some of the updates are still important and they should be installed, how often should I manually enable the service and update my system ?

I lost access to my FTP server overnight.

The FTP service was working beautifully when suddenly it stopped allowing me accesses from outside of the LAN. The router is still working and port 21 is still being forwarded to my server.

I still can access the FTP server from within the LAN, but when I tried to access from the WAN through Chrome it says server refused connection. FilleZilla does the same. CuteFTP (the one I use) DO allows me in after doing some process (dunno what) but I need Chrome and Filezilla to work for my customers.

Here is the log of the CuteFTP connection. Can you help me spot what's wrong? I notice it fails after trying to enter into passive mode, then it switches to something else (which FileZilla doesn't seem to do) and that's how it gains access.

I've tried everything in the "Official Malware Removal Guide" and more, but this particular Malware will not go away.

Malware opens additional windows whenever I'm browsing a shopping sites such as newegg, bestbuy, target.
e.g. I'll search "Nintendo Switch" on Newegg then additional windows will automatically pop up with Nintendo Switch games. I am using Google Chrome and the problem started after I installed an Ebates extension. I have since deleted this extension, but the problem remain.
I've tried everything suggested in the "Official Malware Remove Guide" and every major antivirus free on the market. I get 0 results from scans.

Please help.

Ram slot stopped working all of the sudden - What could the cause be?

Hello,

I was playing BF1 when suddenly my computer crashed, I assume it was a BSOD but after 5 minutes of staring at the frozen screen I rebooted manually. When the computer tried to start again it was stuck in a boot-loop. I looked at the motherboard display (asrock-z77) and it displayed code 55, i.e. 'Memory not installed' so I took out one ram-block, tried rebooting and it started up fine. I tried putting it back in the same block, but that made the boot-loop come back. I then put it into the ram-slot right next to it (B1), which means the ram-blocks are now located in A2-B1. I am just curious as to what could have caused this?

Edit: And is there anyway I can fix that ramslot or is it just broken now?

Is there a built in SHA1 and MD5 string encryption in Win10?

Hi,

In light of the 711 million email account and password database being published. I would like to check if the passwords that my parents use have already been matched with SHA1 or MD5 hashes.

My parents are well into their 60s. They don't want to bother with downloading programs and doing this and that. So i want to create a small script that will take their passwords and convert them into SHA1 and MD5 hashes and save it in to a text document. I already have a perl implementation of this, but at a 138MB/500MB download just for perl is quite beefy and seems unnecessary.

So to start off with, i think something like a bat file would be the easiest with any SHA1 or MD5 builtin functions would be the best.

Does Win10 have built in SHA1 and MD5 functions to encrypt strings?

Acer Swift 3 when I plug in head phones, the speakers won't work (after removing head phones) usually have to restart to get the speakers to work again

I usually have to run like the sound troubleshoot, which if this doesn't work have to restart.

I'm using Windows 10 Home

Looking at the device/levels it says "speakers" (when head phones are unplugged) and you see the animation playing, but no sound comes out

Asterisk key on laptop stuck - driving me insane - I have no idea why or how this happened.

Forced to type this from a different machine. It happened last night. I have tried restarting the laptop, but no luck. I have tried banging on the offending key. Nothing. I don't even USE that part of the keyboard and now it's stuck?!?!

It's still stuck and I might have to take it to a specialist. Any tips in the meantime? I don't want my text lost in a sea of asterisks.

Help.

How does my browser know my location

I'm from the UK but I live in the Middle East. It's a real pain sometimes trying to access my UK-based services from a Middle Eastern IP address and so I've taken some steps to hide my location but somehow websites know...!?

This is everything I can think of...

  • I use a UK VPN
  • using whatismyipaddress I have checked that I am seen as being located in the UK
  • Also using whatismyipaddress I have verified that my real IP address is not being leaked via WebRTC (I have the WebRTC Network Limiter app installed in my browser)
  • I reject third party cookies
  • All cookies are cleared when I close down my browser
  • I have Javascript disabled on all sites by default (I only enable it on sites that I trust if they require javascript to run properly)
  • I am using Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4)
  • My browser user agent is set to 'en-us'
  • My browser has access to 'Location' disabled
  • I have set my Windows 10 timezone to UTC +00:00 (London)
  • My Windows country/region is set to United Kingdom
  • My installed languages in Windows are English (UK) and English (US)

Yet somehow Facebook always loads in Arabic (until I log in). And Google always loads in Arabic (https://www.google.ae). If I go to http://ift.tt/2rO9th4 it thinks that I am located in Dubai (I am not in Dubai but it is suspiciously close to my location).

I understand it's possible for websites to detect that a proxy is being used, but loading pages in Arabic seems to suggest that other information is being leaked somehow.

Any ideas?

Google Calendar sync issue

I plan on using Google Calendar on both my desktop and my mobile phone more regularly, so I went ahead and started importing all of my events and appointments I could possibly think of to it. Everything went smoothly untill I tried importing my Facebook events to my personal Google Calendar. I succesfully included the URL Facebook provided to my ''other calendars'' tab and every event does indeed show up on my desktop Calendar, but for some reason the app has not synced with my desktop (yet?), meaning that none of my Facebook events appear on my phone. Interestingly enough I cannot even find the ''other calendars'' tab on my phone at all. Downloading the latest updated version of the app didn't fix it. Does anyone know what's going on?

[Windows 7] Security types do not match

So I've just set up my PC in my Uni digs and whenever I try to connect to the WiFi, I get told that the security types do not match.

All of my flatmates have connected no problem, my phone is fine as well so I'm assuming It's an issue with my computer.

I have tried googling the issue but some solutions involve going into the wireless settings on the router which I don't have access to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Receiving confirmation email for setting up a send as email using Mailgun, Gmail, and Namecheap.

Hi, basically I'm using this guide: http://ift.tt/1OdKuuu to use my custom domain that I got on Namecheap to send mail with gmail. I've done all the steps and at the end when you enter the smtp stuff in gmail to send mail as, it requests that I confirm it with a confirmation email that has been sent to contact@mydomain.me. However since Namecheap doesn't have an inbox as far as I can tell how can I access this email?

This is probably a stupid question but cheers in advance.

RGB VS CMYK Poster PDF Colour Issues

Hey,

I've created an academic poster, in Powerpoint which uses RGB. I was going to print via Instantprint, but first there needs to be a conversion to CMYK of course.

Powerpoint can't do that natively, so the exported PDF gets converted, and that totally washes out the colours.

I don't know much about this sorta thing, but the goal, is to print my RGB PDF in CMYK with the correct reproduction I selected when first creating it.

Can anyone lend some advice?

Video conference set up advice & help

Hi everyone,

I've had bad experiences with most video conference softwares/set ups I've used so I'm turning to you for something reliable. I'm looking to connect constantly a team that is US-based with a team that is France-based through video and sound. These teams need high levels of cooperation, the sound will most likely be off 90% of the time the feed is active.

Regarding these needs, what would you suggest software AND hardware wise to have this video/sound feed.

Hope I'm in the right place for that kind of question, thanks for your help and sorry for the potential broken english.

How to actually power off Pandora on Android

It baffles me that Pandora changed their app a while back and eliminated the "Quit" or "Power off" option from the app itself. I can pause the music and swipe to "seemingly" get rid of it, but an hour later it's back on display showing the same song I paused. Even Pandora's own instructions say to go on your phone to "Recent apps" and force it to quit from there.

I would pay for a third-party app that would specifically quit Pandora. And not a generic "task killer" app - one that just shuts Pandora off. Using Android 7.0 on an LG V20.

Anyone found a solution for this?

My PC is dying / getting superslow

With your help I hope to find out where the problem is, as I dont want to buy a complete new one.

My specs: http://ift.tt/2wLBTxi

I know not the newest rig but it should still work decently for most games and especially browsing etc. should not be any problem.

It is always slow but sometimes it spikes hard where it feels like my PC aint doing shit for 2sec. Gaming, asides from league which runs pretty ok is not enjoyable at all. But the performance is so bad that even browsing is not enjoyable at all.

Since Im a very active gamer my PC was running alot those 4 and a half years. Especially the last 1 and a half year it was running pretty much 24/7 with black desert online always running in the background.

What did I try so far?

  • All drivers are updated

  • Temperatures are good

  • Everything inside is clean

  • Memtest done, no problem

  • Prime95 test done, blue screen after 35 mins (Im not sure which of those 3 tests, I guees the one which focuses on cpu)

  • SSD s.m.a.r.t. test by crucial's own software done, no problem

  • Furmark to test graphic, I dont rly remember what the result was but I dont consider my graphiccard as the problem as everything is lagging

  • Tweaked nvidia setting to full performance, no change at all

  • All games to lowest possible graphics, no change at all

  • Upgraded win7 pro to win 10 pro, no change at all

What I didnt try yet:

  • Fresh windows install with wiping everything.

  • No idea how to test if the mainboard and the "power supply thingy" works (not sure whats the correct english term is)

My guees:

CPU. Since it failed prime95 test after only 35mins or one of those 2 things I didnt test. Also I need to upgrade my RAM to atleast another 8 GB.

Any suggestions and opinions are welcome

Seems like my internet service doesn't want to help so I decide to post on reddit

So this wifi router was working fine but suddenly it stop working after 2h. If i go the TP-Link page which is http://192.168.1.1/ I see that both of my Line status and ADSL WAN status stuck in Initializing then Disconnected and the current rate upstream/downstream are 0. I try to contact my internet service since yesterday. They only said they'll try to fix it soon, but no one show up or contact me back. Edit : Resetting wifi seems to solve the problem but after 2h it stopped working again.

Corrupted data on IDE drive

We have an old PC in the house from maybe the early 2000's. We were using it up until about 07, and haven't used it since. However, it does have a lot of old family photos on.

Recently I tried to boot up the PC to no avail. Open up the casing, and most of the component "blocks" were rusted and very loose. Wonderful. I strip everything down and manage to remove the IDE drive. Thankfully, there is no damage on this at all and it looks to be in fine working condition.

After a request on here on the best way to get data off this drive, I purchase an IDE enclosure and hook the whole thing up to my PC. The drive is whirring away fine, my PC recognises that the drive is connected - but it says the data is corrupted.

Any way at all to get the data off this drive? Any software to "uncorrupt" the data? Any help is appreciated.

Description of problem

Hey everyone,I’ve had an ongoing issue PC for quite a while now. I’ve tried fixing it myself but unfortunately haven’t had any success, which is why I’m now hoping that someone else could guide me and provide insight to get this resolved. To get straight to the issue, when playing games my monitor will flicker to a black screen and the monitor will report that the signal has been lost. The issue varies slightly from game to game though; for example, with Rocket League this will occur five seconds after reaching the menu screen, then after the monitor has reported “signal lost” the game will tab out to Windows, tab back into the menu and keep repeating that process. In another game I’ll get as far as into loading a match and shortly afterwards the screen will turn to black. In each case the computer keeps running, an audio loop can be heard and the keyboard locks up. Sometimes it will crash hard enough to simply restart the computer, otherwise I just have to hold the power button and turn the computer on again. This issue has gradually seemed to have got worse over a few months. Originally it would only happen for Rocket League exclusively every few times that I tried to run the game; now I can’t get it past the menu screen at all. Then the issue has gradually started to occur on other games also.Any help would be massively appreciated!

When this issue began

Around 6 months ago on a minimal level but has gradually become worse.

Recurring issue

Yes

Date of purchase

N/A

Under Warranty

No

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Run a game, wait for a menu, match or level to load.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.Tried different cables from my PC to monitor.Cleaned the inside of the PC.Ran DDU and used a clean install of my GPU drivers.Reseated my GPU and RAM.Checked temperatures for the GPU.Disabled “Hardware Acceleration” in Flash.Applied a TdrDelay Regedit change.Underclocking my GPU as it was factory overclocked.

S.O.S. I've been had, all the way through, it feels like.

It was finally time to replace my faithful White MacBook. So, I bought a 2013 13' MBP w/Retina from a nice dude on Facebook Marketplace a while back. He exchanged all info, was very personable and met me in public. Bought for an inconspicuous amount and came home. Had a fresh install ready to boot from USB.

Upon waking the comp up and seeing what looked like an empty desktop, I shut it down and restarted holding OPTION. All of a sudden, I'm being asked to enter a 6 digit numerical code. I think, "Well shit, dude had one of those lockout codes from when he set it up." No problem. I'll call him.

The phone he called from is dead and has no voicemail. He blocked me/ or deleted himself off of Facebook. It was at this point I began to feel reeaal naive. I did research and after figuring that the guy sold me a stolen book, I called the fuzz. Let them know what was going on and asked if they had a serial number reported that matched my new brick. They didn't and they still don't.

This was some time ago and I've since researched like crazy to find at a least a solution that won't leave me out half a grand. New Jersey has a place that supposedly replaces EFI chips on locked computers. Heard there was one in Dallas. I'm assuming that's the problem after having read all the links I've come across.

Apparently, Apple is of no help at all without a form of original receipt so as to combat theft. I feel completely SOL at this point. Reddit, being my source of GOOD info from society, this here is my cry for help. Does anyone know of any solution at all to this shit show I've bought myself into?

My TV stopped getting sound from my PC. Hooked up via HDMI.

Recently I moved my bedroom downstairs to another room that had a TV. I bought an HDMI-to-HDMI cable so I could play games from my PC on my TV. I decided to watch a movie through my PC one night. The next day I wake up, go to work, and come home to play a game only to find that my PC is no longer sending sound to my TV. The picture is just fine, I just wasn't getting sound the day after I watched a movie through the TV speakers.

On my PC I have a dual monitor set up and swap out my monitor that uses HDMI and my TV a lot because my graphics card only has one HDMI slot. I have uninstalled my TV through the device manager, restarted my PC, and restarted my TV. I just don't know what could be causing it. I don't need the sound, as I do have headphones, but sound out of the TV can be a nice luxury.

Passphrases were originally in a regular txt file I used to access with geany, no encrypted, but after having formatted it to create a live usb I dont think the data is recoverable. I know the text file in which the passphrases are includes the words 'toshiba' and 'ortg'. I know the file is located at /Basic/al or /basic/al. Is there anyway I can force custom refresh rates on my laptop screen?

I have a laptop with dual graphics (nvidia and intel) and it seems that adding custom resolutions and refresh rates are totally disabled in both the Nvidia and Intel control panels. CRU will not not work either. Is there a way to add custom refresh rates by editing driver files or doing something else? I'm using windows 10 btw.

New monitor stuck in power save mode (Dell S2417DG)

Hey guys, I've spent the last 2 hours dealing with this; I'm pretty frustrated.

I just got a new Dell S2417DG and the screen is just blank. My computer does not recognize the Mini DP-DP cable (full stop, just nothing. . ) When I plug in the HDMI, the computer recognizes it, but the screen is still blank.

On the monitor side, anytime I hit any of the buttons on the bottom right, it brings up the input selector and lets me choose between the DP and the HDMI. I cannot access any other menus on the monitor.

One messages comes up every time I hit a button on the monitor.

"Power saving function is on. When there is no signal for certain period, the monitor will go into power saving, to wake up the monitor, press any menu button"

It seems to be stuck in power save mode. I have no clue what to do!

Thanks for reading guys, I appreciate it.

Networks adapter doesn't start with windows.

I use intel mainboard DH61WW on which there is an intel 82579v network adapter. I use win7 64 bit. On every cold start (not restart) the device show up with an exclaimation mark and have to be disable and re-enable for it to work. I tried each of the following separately: reinstall window, disable power saving of the device, update driver, rollback driver, install NVM Update Utility for Intel® 82579V. None works, this happen after one power outage, it also cause my ps/2 port to fucked up which i replace with an usb keyboard. The only solution left for me is to flash bios but i am an amateur and from what i gather on the internet if you can seriously fuck shit up if you flash bios incorrectly and since the PC still work fine except that you have to restart the network adapter every times, i really hesitate to flash the bios. Any other suggestion to fix this.

Edit: i am not sure if this is the correct sub to ask about this, if not please suggest one for me.

[Win 8.1] Opera browser immediately starts using 100% disk allocation upon starting and remains that way (if it doesn't end up not responding). WTF?

Whenever I start it up, my PC just basically shits itself. It's a nice browser but this is annoying as fuck. Superfetch is disabled but using Opera still commands 100% disk usage when it it's running. Often leading to it becoming non-responsive. What can I do?

I'm running Win 8.1 with 8 GB of RAM. Conventional HDD (not solid state). Can provide more info if needed.

Active Directory Rights Management Help

Hi, I'm trying to set up ADRMS for a customer so I'm trying to test it on a virtual domain, I've tried on two different domains, one in VMWare and one in Hyper V and both times I hit the same error.

I set up Server 2012, set it up as a DC and add the ADRMS service.

I set up a W10 client, added to the domain installed office.

I've followed the general microsoft instructions including ensuring that;

My users have an email address in their AD account

Ive added rms.hope.local and also http://rms.hope.local into the clients intranet area in internet options

Ive enabled anonymous authentication for license and service locator.asmx in IIS

Enabled allow exporting in the 'specify templates fie location' that location exists, and can be access by all staff

When I open excel or what ever on my client and I attempt to protect my document with rights management, I get;

"Sorry. something went wrong with opening Information Rights Management protected content. The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting bla bla bla" I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could shed some light on this. Thanks

Help With Slow Samsung N220 Notebook

Hello everyone,

Im looking for help speeding up my Samsung N220 notebook, I know its not exactly a Ferrari. It's got 1 gig of RAM and a intel atom 1.66Ghz processor and is running windows 7 starter.

So far i have cleared and reloaded the OS, Uninstalled any programs that i didn't require, set only the bare minimum programs to boot on startup and used CCleaner to get rid of any unneeded memory.

I have also run scans with Microsoft security essentials, Avast and Malwarebytes and only found some adware which i removed.

Like i said i know its not a very powerful little notebook, I dont use it to store any media and only really use it to surf the net. despite all this I feel its running much slower than it should.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated!

Hey guys, posting from my phone because my pc just committed sudoku while I was playing destiny 2 beta while listening to a stream in the background. Everything was working fine until the game + stream sound froze and went to blue screen. It gives me the error "CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT" and its been stuck at 10% for about a half an hour and quite frankly, I want to join it. I cannot remove Skype advertisements

There is an old thread in /r/pcmasterrace but it's not working for me anymoe http://ift.tt/2cpaQK4 I have added both apps.skype.com and https://apps.skype.com and still see the advertisements. I even tried changing the region to Antarctica but it still didn't help. Screenshots of how it looks - http://ift.tt/2xwNSwl

I also tried editing the config.xml file and either changing the tag <Advertplacement> to 0 or removing it completely, it didn't change anything apart from the fact that it wanted me to provide login credentials again. I tried making the file read only after the changes, that didn't do it either.

Any ideas how to solve this? I am not an administrator on this computer. I could get it for 24h if needed. It runs Windows 7 64bit enterprise edition.

[Windows] Acer Predator 15 experiencing issues after HP Printer tech connected remotely to PC to assist with printer installation

Occasionally my HP ENVY wireless printer fails to update and I have to have HP remotely connect to my PC to assist with a full re-installation. Typically this entails them ending a bunch of tasks and making tons of adjustments that I don't understand. This last time the tech connected to my computer, it took him 1 hour to make the changes and i had to give him a ton of administrator privileges in order to make changes. Now I am slowly noticing issues. First off, my NUM Lock key no longer shows an animation on my screen when locking and unlocking the numeric pad. This is a small inconvenience, but I have been dealing with it. The button still works, just doesn't show any sign of doing anything when pressed. In addition, I saw that he had disabled Steam. Being a gamer, that really agitated me, so i figured out how to enable the app so i could play games again. Third, predator sense doesn't work anymore. The app simply refuses to load. I click on it and then it animates like its going to start up, but nothing happens! I need this to work in order to adjust my processor speeds and to check my temperatures! The last time all of this happened, i ended up backing up my whole computer and reinstalling EVERYTHING from my recovery drive. I really dont want to have to do this again. Any ideas on how i can fix this? I am computer savvy, so explaining wont require much. I have searched my laptop for any signs of LogMeIn, which is the program I believe they used to connect with my PC and i have come up with nothing thus far. Also, my computer is only about 3 months old, so age shouldn't be a problem.

Hello everybody - am I in the right subreddit? I've got an Moto Play G with android (and live in germany so I use german language if this matters) that got Google Assistant a few weeks ago. The point is: I've got no need for it. And it constantly pops up notifications like: Call a friend, should I tell you a joke etc. even if it is disabled. I tried to uninstall google apps which worked for a while, but then auto update happened and its back again. How can I completely disable this little annoying brat? Thank you

Is there a way to check if my Windows software (Win 7, 8, 10, Office) are genuine?

I want to see if my computer is using a crack or a volume license key. All I can find so far as a solution is to compare my product key to what was originally on the box, but I've lost that. Also, I think my Office might be from a key I bought online, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, is there some way or software to check if my Windows software is genuine? Thank you.

8 months ago. It stopped for 2 months with some part changes, but came back.

Recurring issue

Yes

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Use the PC for a week or two. Happens randomly.I was simply watching a 720p video. Nothing stressful.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

First, I added 2 fans top for exhaust, and one another in front for intake. The problem did not get fixed at all.So I RMA'd the GPU because it seems to not crash with my backup 780 Ti. However, the new 980Ti still had the problem.Next, I RMA'd the PSU. The problem went away for 2 months I believe. Then it started happening again 2 weeks ago. This is the second time that happened.

Trying to add an SSD to my PC that runs on HDD. Plugged in SSD, turned on computer, nothing happened!

Not sure what to do here. I added the SATA to the mobo/SSD and placed it somewhere in the computer. I added the PSU cable to the SSD. Nice!

Then I turn on my PC. I want to install Windows 10 (running win7 on my HDD) on my SSD. However, turning it on just runs win7 on my HDD and when I go to MY COMPUTER, it doesn't show my SSD anywhere. I have a USB stick that should have win10 on it since I used MediaCreationTool to add win10 to it.

Confused. i have a gigabyte mobo if that helps. Goal is to run OS and most programs from SSD, with my HDD still there for data and maybe other programs as backup.

My HDD is Disk0 with partitions C and D (C is OS, D is everything else). In Disk management, I saw my SSD as Disk1 and initialized it. it is now Drive B.

Should I switch my SSD to C and then the HDD to some other letters? will that cause trouble? how would I do that?

Symantec gave me a malware warning and then I had a pop up from microsoft, now some websites are lagging

I've had my current computer for almost a year now and it's held up pretty well. It's given me no trouble thus far. Some time ago I purchased Symantec for $300. Now into my issue:

I was away from my computer for about an hour and a half. I had Youtube open and the only other tabs open were Tumblr and maybe Facebook. When I went back to my computer, I immediately got a pop up from Symantec saying they detected "pornographic malware" and that they were blocking the malware ip for x seconds. Immediately after I got a pop up from Microsoft telling me to contact Microsoft support etc etc.

Now I'm no stranger to looking up porn on my computer but typically all my porn viewing comes from Reddit and Tumblr. The only time I access a straight up porn website is on my iPhone.

I'm running a full scan with Symantec right now, but in the mean time, some of my websites are being very laggy and strange. I'm not sure if this is the result of a virus or something completely unrelated. Granted, my desktop is due for a cleaning, but the timing of it is concerning.

Here's my specs.

Malware bytes ran but random strange occurrence happened

I JUST SAW A POST ABOUT THIS AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE ARE REPORTING THIS SORT OF ISSUE AFTER USING SKYPE I HAVE UNINSTALLED SKYPE! FOR NOW CONSIDER SKYPE DANGEROUS SINCE IT MAY HAVE A BACK DOOR

Had a live chat with Skype tech support regarding a potential security breech. The tech support person said that they were going to send it to the engineers to investigate

I'm using Chrome, with ad-blocker, hangouts (google chat), and docs.

So I was just minding my own business on Skype talking with friends then left the call for a while and when I came back when a random pornographic site (child porn something about american movers.com) popped up while on my desktop after I left the call I managed to close it before it did anything I have no downloads of any pictures just the website, so I ran malware bytes and after a while it finished and it removed two PUGs I had them removed, 5 minutes later task bar application opens up randomly even though I was not doing anything that would cause it to open so I run it again and it does not find anything wrong. This computer is used very carefully by just me and have never visited any sketchy sites. The only thing that I can think of that would have brought a virus onto my computer was a flash drive that I let one of my classmates use a while back to present a project from his home PC to the school. I plugged in the flash drive into my computer yesterday and today I got the random pop up and the random task bar program launching. I know that malwarebytes removed two threats but I'm not sure if that random taskbar application is anything serious or just me overthinking.

Android won't lock, receive calls, open Internet Browser anymore amongst various probably connected issues that occurred all at once.

Summary of issues/TL;DR:

  • Biggest issue, I can't receive any calls, but I can make them. The other person just gets passed to voicemail, and I get a "missed call" message.

  • Phone won't lock, Screen will turn off, but it won't go to the lock screen after turning it on. Settings are all correct.

  • No Notifications. I hear them and my phone vibrates, but nothing shows up in the notification bar.

  • Can't access the Quick Access (hah...) settings in the notification drop down. (Drop down menu is basically blank.)

  • Physical Home button and Options button don't respond, Back button still works.

  • Can't access developer options, it says unavailable for this user.

My phone is an M4 SS1060, android ver. 4.2.2.

These issues happened all at once a month back, I don't even know if it was after a restart or if they just appeared while using it. I don't really download anything on my phone so it shouldn't be malware, but I'm willing to check if it could be.

I have a PIN lock set to my phone, but when I turn off my phone (just pressing the power button to lock it) it just shuts off the screen like norma, but once I turn it back on, when I should be prompted to my main screen where I put in the pin, instead, I am already inside the device as if I already put the pin in. When I receive a notification, it doesn't pop up or show, it vibrates/makes a noise, but doesn't pop up for anything. When I swipe down from the top it always says no notifications, and I cant swipe down more to access the settings like brightness and flashlight, I have to go into my settings to do so. Etc, etc...

I've been looking online for anyone else that has had this problem, and apart from the various "Just reset" answers (I don't really want to reset apart from a last resort), the only answer I could find was here:

--NO RESET NEEDED in this case--

Hey guys!

I've got a Moto G2, main problems I had:

  • phone didn't lock
  • the notifications didn't appear anywhere, I could just hear the sound - occasionally
  • there was nothing on the drop down menu - no notifications and no other options like 'airplane mode' etc
  • last but not least, I couldn't receive any calls (could receive messages though)

So, after surfing the web in many different forums (where it appeared that Factory Reset was the only solution), I bumped into this magic tip which saved me WITHOUT HAVING TO DO ANY RESET whatsoever!

First switch to Safe Mode (while the phone is switched on): Press Power button and Long press 'Power off' on the popup menu --> Choose 'ok' on the popup window with title 'Reboot to Safe Mode' --> go to Settings --> Users --> Choose 'Guest' and everything starts working fine on the guest account. Then switch back to your account, turn the phone off and on again (this is needed to restore the applications that were disabled when we reboot into safe mode) and that's about it!

Here's a short video of how to enter and exit the Safe mode step by step:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSHzoSEx8xY>

Hope this helps as it helped me (after struggling for days with this little device of satan! )

So my problem with this is, the "Users" settings on my phone is in the Quick Access menu, which I can't access now. Can't find it anywhere else on my phone.

Anyone know of a way to fix these issues? People tell me to send it in for repair, but I'm sure the shop will just make me to pay for a reset. It'd be a huge help, thanks!

SSD on SATA 3 is recognized as SATA 2

  • ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
  • 120GB OCZ Agility 3

Both Speccy and OCZ's SSD Utility software is showing that my SSD is on SATA 2 3Gb/s even though its connected to the SATA 3 6Gb/s port on the motherboard. AHCI mode is on and the BIOS recognizes the SSD connection to the SATA 3 port. I tried both of the 6Gb/s Intel ports and I get the same thing, and the 6Gb/s Marvell port just doesn't let me boot at all. BIOS and SSD have latest firmware.

What is causing the SSD to be read as a SATA 2 when connected to a SATA 3 port? Thanks in advance!

Fake explorer.exe and svchost.exe

My PC is a Pentium Dual Core E5700 3GHz, Intel G41 Express Chipset and 2GB of ram (Pretty rusty, but surprisingly good performance in Wii and Gamecube games) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

So recently, i see the 2 processes mentioned above, and one of them (It's always random) uses up 50% CPU, but the really weird thing is that whenever i open up "Dolphin.exe" (GC and Wii emulator) or sometimes another process, the .exe file is given the "hidden" property and the 2 processes open up, the result is that my PC gets really slow, however this isn't dolphin.exe's fault, as i could play games on it perfectly some time ago, nor is it other game as i have ran scans on it with MalwareBytes and Avast! giving no bad results.

I can't close any process as doing so will only cause the other process to open it up again instantly. I have managed to delete the 2 of them many times before, but they just come back when i open any .exe file, i have eliminated their "Runonce" entries in the Registry editor just after i delete the files (and i have tried before i delete them) but those entries get created again and the problem continues.

Runonce.exe is found in Syswow64 and System32 folders, but they can't be deleted since i need permission from trustedinstaller (Even then i can't change the permissions of the folders nor of runonce.exe)

I also have tried deleting the files and the entries in the registry in safe mode but it doesn't work, since as soon i go back to normal mode it starts again.

This is the most bullet proof virus i have ever seen on my PC, i have tried every method i know of to get rid of it but they never work.

And the handles in explorer.exe are: ntdll.dll!Userthreadstart (This one has 4 copies of it) explorer.exe (with one copy) ole32.dll

The handles in svchost.exe svchost.exe (with one copy) ole32.dll ntdll.dll!Userthreadstart (Between 3 and 6 copies)

That's all the information i can remember right now, by the way, i can't answer questions right now but tomorrow i will be able to answer all of them, so if possible try to post direct solutions.

Someone tried to look up child porn on my computer?

Ok, I'm freaked out right now. I was playing pubg with a couple of friends over skype. I had to go take a shower so I left the game and put my mic on mute (didn't leave the call) I went and took a shower and when I went back to my PC, "naked underaged girls" was searched into google.

I opened my history and found that this was searched several times with some another website, "american-movers-company.com" This is really F***ing weird. How would someone do this?

I've had malware before and viruses, but never have I had something like this. Is this even possible? I'm experienced with computers and this just scares me. I'm doing a malware bytes scan and will let you know what comes up.

Do RAM frequencies matter when adding more RAM?

Hello techsupport.

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my 4+ year old laptop, but I'm having trouble understand what I should buy. Currently my laptop has two DDR3L slots with a 2GB Micron Technology 667MHz chip and a 4GB Hynix 667MHz chip.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to hardware, but if I understand correctly I should buy RAM in a DDR3L module (what are these things actually called? Forgive my weird terminology). However, I can't find any with a 667MHz frequency to match what I already have. All of the modules I've found online or in stores have a much higher frequency, like 1333MHz or 1066MHz. I'm sure this is because my laptop's hardware is relatively old and technology has improved since I bought it.

So I guess I have a few questions: 1. Does the frequency matter? Can I install a RAM module with a higher frequency than what my laptop is used to without any problems? 2. Do I have to replace both slots? I was only going to replace the smaller since I don't think I need more than 8gb of memory.

For reference I'm using a HP ENVY TouchSmart m6-k022dx Sleekbook. Thanks.

Deep, whirring noise from PC

Hello dear Redditors

I do not have too much knowledge of computers, and thought ths was the place.

For a while my desktop PC has been making way too much noise, and with it being in the living room, it has really annoyed family members. It had never been cleaned since purchase (years ago), and I thought why not clean it. I had never seen that much dust in my life. Having no equipment, I had lightly cleaned it with towels, afraid that I might damage the hardware. A lot of the dust was removed. I put it back on, and it seems that the same noise just continued at a different pitch. Everytime I run more than one program, or put on Youtube, it sounds like a plane is about to take off.

At this point, I really don't know what is going on with the PC, and would hope there is a DIY solution to this.

Cheers

Unable to use hard drives or configure them in Windows Storage Spaces

I set up the drives as a striped pool in Storage Spaces but my computer crashed and I reinstalled Windows on another drive.

Now my 2 striped HDDs show up in Storage Spaces but I'm unable to configure them. Clicking "Change Settings" just grays out and does nothing like in the screenshot.

I am also able to see my drives via BIOS (AHCI), Device Manager, and WD's diagnostic tool, however I'm not able to see the hard drives in Disk Management, File Explorer, or diskpart via cmd.

Not sure what to do. I need to configure the drives so I can see them in the File Explorer, but clicking "Change Settings" just grays out and doesn't allow me to do anything.

The drives pass a SAFE test and are working properly according to Device Manager.

Troubles with installing the AMD display driver (Windows Kernel Security Check Error)

I'm trying to install the AMD driver for my graphics card. The installation almost completes but as soon as the system switches to the new driver, I get a screen full of blue noise and the system reboots. After this the system will permanently reboot straight into a KernelSecurityCheck-Error.

To fix this I need to boot into save mode once and deinstall the driver. After that, Windows boots normally again, but will be using "mircrosoft basic display driver" instead.

When I try to install the display driver in safe mode, I get a driver signature error, which is very weird.

I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro and the Graphics Card is a R9 270x. I haven't bothered with games yet, but the card(default driver) is driving the display without problems (videos and such). Never had any troubles with the card before this incident, random crashes or artifacts and such. However, the OS is fresh, since I had to switch to a new motherboard recently.

I'm worried, that there might be a hardware problem. What do you guys suggest?

Understanding routers

I share a 100 mbps plan with three other people. In the evenings when we are all home, the wifi sucks. Was thinking it could just be bandwidth problem but since we have the largest plan we have to find another solution. As a test, I plugged my ethernet into laptop and router, DL speed was 77 then on wifi right after that it was 31. I have a simple cisco router. Would buying a better router help. Or should a range extender be the next step?

Changed out CPU cooler and now pc wont turn show signal

Title explains it all. I have a i5 6500 and was using the stock cooler. Recently bought a cryoig m9 because the cpu was getting hot while running pubg.

Installation went good, all I need was remove the RAM, take one cooler out and then put the other one in then put the ram back into its spot. Go to turn the pc on, everything is running fine, new cpu cooler is running graphics card is running except now I'm not getting a signal on my monitor?

Things I have tried have been plugging the graphics card in and out, checking the connection cables, from the graphics card to the monitor. Also tried with hdmi with the graphics card to the monitor with no signal. Tried to run the hdmi from the mobo to the monitor and that also didn't work.

Kinda at a loss here any help is appreciated. Solved: RAM wasn't pushed in all the way.

Need help connecting 7 different TVs to as few computers as possible, all with different images.

My company has a wall of 7 different not-smart TVs and we're trying to connect all of them to 1-2 computers (1 is preferred) via HDMI cables. We've looked into custom building the computers and using 7 different video cards and we've also researched 8 port HDMI splitters. The splitters I've found only allow for repeated images. We need 7 different images/presentations, one for each screen.

Is there a better way to do this? Or should we just get 2 computers that each have a 4 port HDMI splitter that allows for separate images?

IE11/Windows 10: Windows Security Login Dialogue Box Opens Behind Browser

Hi All,

We are having an issue with IE11 on Windows 10 where when visiting pages that prompt a windows security dialogue box requesting a username and password, that dialogue box opens up in the background, behind the browser window. This is causing confusion for users as they are seeing only a blank page, and nothing notifying them that there is a dialogue box open prompting them for credentials. Only after minimizing their browser do they see the dialogue box. Has anyone come across this or have any possible solutions? Works as expected in Edge and other browsers, however some of these portals we utilize recommend IE for best experience unfortunately.

My machine where I am able to replicate:

64 Bit Windows 10 Pro on MS Surface

IE11 Version: 11.540.15063.0

Update Versions: 11.0.45 (KB4034733)

Many thanks!

Preventing user account theft? Good cyber security "hygiene?"

Are there more comprehensive methods of preventing account theft besides just using different passwords for different websites, and two factor authentication?

What are some general tips you think the general public should be aware of?

Can colleges see what you open on your computer without asking for permission

So let's say you are in an online class and take a test on blackboard. Can your professor Be notified if you make a new tab or press any buttons outside the window of the test?

There is a Blackboard Respondus Lockdown tool but our professor didn't make us download it yet.

CCleaner Killed my Laptop

Just got a brand new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop. Decided to install CCleaner because it worked really well on my PC back home. I'm not all that smart about computers but I decided I wanted to do a deep clean (which in hindsight was useless because it's brand new and didn't have any files anyways) so I checked every single box. I check marked all of them. Just sorta hoping that if there were any useless files that came with the laptop would all just be thrown out (this is just the free version of CCleaner btw.) As it was cleaning, it said it was gonna take about 2 hours to finish. About halfway through, my laptop just shut itself down and when I turned it back on it said it had turned off incorrectly and asked me if I want to restart it again so I did. Then when it booted back up I had that windows 10 loading circle, the one with all the dots. But a totally black screen other than that. It wasn't doing anything so I thought it might have froze so I manually turned it back off. Then when I turned it it was just a black screen. But it was dead, I could still use my mouse and I could change the brightness so that tells me it's technically working. I think CCleaner uninstalled windows 10 and since it's a laptop I have no idea how I'm going to reinstall it. That might be the issue but I'm not totally sure. I'm going to take it to the IT people at my university but if anyone knows how to fix it that would save me a lot of money. Thanks!

Right mouse buttons don't work correctly in certain games.

I’ve got a problem that’s been plaguing me for a long time that I am finally fed up with. As stated in the title the issue lies in the rmb. For some games the rmb does not register clicks or I need to double click the rmb for it to work. I’m not sure but I don’t think it’s a hardware problem as the rmb works fine in game when I switch the lmb and rmb in settings. This issue persist with any mouse that I plug into my computer. There is no issue with the rmb outside of gaming i.e browsing, reading, video player.

In the games where the rmb is not registered, holding rmb while moving the mouse will not move the screen. However, when I release rmb the screen snaps to where I moved it to. Some games where the issue happens are Fallout 4, Cod AW, Quantum Break, and Shadow of Mordor. The issue does not exist in Overwatch, GTA 5, Skyrim, Watch Dogs 2, Cod Blops 3.

I tried using ShellExView and disabling all third party applications but to no avail. Using the browser mouse event tester page, I’ve noticed that the rmb does not register mousedown when I click the button, but registers mousedown and mouseup the moment I release the button. Switched lmb and rmb in settings fixes this. Booting into safe mode does not fix the problem

I am using windows 10 with a 1070 (no OC) and the main mouse that I am using is the gigabyte m7 thor. All help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for any poor English and thank you for your time.

Games lag after every reboot unless I manually update driver to the exact same driver?

I use Win10 and for some reason since the last windows update whenever I boot my windows and go to game I have horrible framerate issues. Someone suggested that with AMD (radeon rx 580 8gb gaming) that after every windows update he has to upgrade his driver manually.

For me though if I dont go and do this after every boot my games studder and lag. Once I do it, my games run perfectly. I checked the driver version after the boot and its the exact one I "update" to manually.

Ive also tried getting Guru3d DDU to remove my drivers completely, booted to safe mode, then reinstalled the newest driver for my video card, reboot again and it's still doing the same thing.

Any help would be appreciated. It just takes a minute to manually go update after every boot, but I'd rather not have to do this.

Components need protection from freezing?

I'm about to install an invisible fence for our two Labs. It's a PetSafe basic fence model, with an extra roll of boundary wire.

When I looked at the instructions more carefully, the manual says to to protect the power unit and transmitter from weather and freezing. Freezing? There is no LCD, or liquid components. What difference could that possibly make? This is kind of a problem, as I set up with the intention of installing the units in our auxillary well pit. It's got a grounded outlet, is protected from weather (insulated wooden lid), and is located relatively near a property boundary; but it's not protected from freezing in the winter.

I also have a garage, but it's not attached, and not protected from freezing either. Same with the old shed in the back (that doesn't have electric either).

How necessary it's this? Anyone have any experience here?

Experimenting with machine learning in media

From the Gutenberg printing press in 1440 to virtual reality today, advances in technology have made it possible to discover new audiences and new ways of expressing. And there’s more to come.

Machine learning is the latest technology to change how news, entertainment, lifestyle and sports content is created, distributed and monetized. YouTube, for example, has used machine learning to automatically caption more than one billion videos to make them more accessible to the 300 million+ people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

While many media executives are increasingly aware of machine learning, it's not always apparent which problems are most suited for machine learning and whose solutions will result in maximum impact.

Machine learning can help transform your business with new user experiences, better monetization of your content and reduce your operational cost.

Executives, here are three things to keep in mind as you consider and experiment with machine learning to transform your  digital business:

  1. The time to experiment with machine learning is right now. The barriers to using machine learning have never been lower. In the same way companies started thinking about investing in mobile 10 years ago, the time to start exploring machine learning is right now. Solutions like Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine have made powerful machine learning infrastructure available to all without the need for investment in dedicated hardware. Companies can start experimenting today with Google Cloud Machine Learning APIs at no charge—and even developers with no machine learning expertise can do it. For example, in less than a day, Time Inc. used a combination of Cloud Machine Learning APIs to prototype a personalized date night assistant that integrated fashion, lifestyle and events recommendations powered by its vast corpus of editorial content.

  2. Bring together key stakeholders from diverse teams to identify the top problems to solve before you start. Machine learning is not the answer to all of your business woes, but a toolkit that can help solve specific, data-intensive problems at scale. With limited time and people to dedicate to machine learning applications, start by  bringing together the right decision makers across your business, product and engineering teams to identify the top problems to solve. Once the top challenges are identified, teams need to work closely with their engineering leads to determine technical feasibility and prioritize where machine learning could have the highest impact. Key questions to answer that will help prioritize efforts are: Can current technology reasonably solve the problem? What does success look like? What training data is needed, and is that data currently available or does it need to be generated. This was the approach that was taken during a recent Machine Learning for Media hackathon hosted by Google and the NYC Media lab, and it paid off with clearer design objectives and better prototypes. For example, for the Associated Press, there was an opportunity to quickly generate sports highlights from analysis of video footage. So they created an automated, real-time sports highlights tool for editors using Cloud Video Intelligence API.

  3. Machine learning has a vibrant community that can help you get started. Companies can kickstart their machine learning endeavors by plugging into the vibrant and growing machine learnig community. TensorFlow, an open source machine learning framework, offers resources, meetups, and more. And if your company needs more hands-on assistance, Google offers a suite of services through the Advanced Solutions Lab to work side-by-side with companies to build bespoke machine learning solutions. There are also partners with deep technical expertise in machine learning that can help. For example, Quantiphi, a machine learning specialist, has been working closely with media companies to extract meaningful insights from their video content using a hybrid of the Cloud Video Intelligence API and custom models created using TensorFlow. However you decide to integrate machine learning technologies into your business, there's a growing ecosystem of solutions and subject matter experts that are available to help.

We hope this provided some insight into ways media companies can leverage machine learning—and what executives can do to bring machine learning to their organizations. We look forward to seeing the full potential of machine learning unfold.
