Three new Fi-friendly phones

Project Fi has always offered a simple and fast wireless experience with the benefits of international roaming at no extra cost, but one of the top requests we hear is for more choices of Fi-friendly phones. That’s why we’re introducing three new phones coming soon to Project Fi: the moto g6, LG G7 ThinQ, and LG V35 ThinQ.

While these phones run the gamut of prices and features, they have a few things in common—including large screens, portrait mode-equipped cameras, expandable storage, and of course, full compatibility with Project Fi. Here’s the scoop on each of our three new devices.

moto g6

Score premium features at a budget-friendly price

The moto g6 (typically $249 but just $199 on Project Fi) is our most affordable Fi-friendly phone, bringing premium features—like a 5.7” edge-to-edge display and portrait mode—to a value-packed smartphone. It comes with a battery built to last, along with TurboPower™ capabilities for quick recharging. The moto g6 has 32 GB of built-in storage, and you can also add up to 128 GB of extra storage with a microSD card. Plus, with free high-quality storage on Google Photos, you never have to worry about running out of space for your photos.

LG G7 ThinQ

Get AI at your fingertips and a best-in-class audio experience

The LG G7 ThinQ ($749) is LG’s latest premium smartphone bringing a combination of useful features to a new design. Its 6.1” edge-to-edge display is both super bright and battery-efficient, and the phone’s Boombox speaker delivers a rich, powerful audio experience and deep bass you can feel. Finally, the LG G7 ThinQ puts smart, AI-powered features front and center to help you get things done more easily. Located just below the volume is a button that launches the phone’s AI functions. A single tap of this button will launch the Google Assistant while two quick taps will launch Google Lens, and its dual 16MP cameras intelligently suggest filters on the fly so you can capture the best shot effortlessly.

LG V35 ThinQ

Enjoy top-of-the-line specs in an ultra lightweight package

The LG V35 ThinQ ($899) packs best-in-class features into stunning, lightweight hardware. With uninterrupted OLED-powered display highlights super vibrant colors, you’ll see photos and videos at their best. Like the G7 ThinQ, it comes with 64 GB of built-in storage—expandable by up to 2 TB with a microSD—and a high-performance processor, but paired with 6 GB of RAM, it enables super fast speeds for those who love to multitask. All of these features come together in an ultra thin and lightweight package—so portability is never a problem.

If you’re ready to get your hands on our new devices, the moto g6 is already available for preorder. The LG G7 ThinQ and LG V35 ThinQ will be coming to Project Fi next month. In the meantime, you can learn more about these phones or sign up for updates on the Project Fi website to know when they are available. Whether you’re considering Project Fi or looking for a new device, these phones provide you with more options to choose from.

Supporting bold ideas for creating a social safety net

We believe that technology has the power to connect people, create opportunities, and inspire change. But we also understand that changes in technology can mean significant changes in our economy and our society, risking leaving some without the right tools or skill set to adapt. That’s why, as part of our efforts to ensure that technology serves everyone, we’re supporting programs that help people prepare for a new economic future. For example, people can use Grow with Google to acquire the skills they need to get their next job. And Walmart and Google.org recently announced a new partnership to promote new approaches to skill-building.

Learning new skills to find a job or start a business is important, but that’s only the beginning. As we see changes in the labor market—more freelancers, changes in benefits, and declining economic mobility— we need to support new policy ideas. We can go beyond a social safety net to a social “trampoline.” People should be able to bounce back from challenges, reach higher, and feel empowered to take steps to improve their careers and get better, richer and more meaningful jobs.

That is why as part of our $50 million Future of Work initiative, Google.org is announcing $2.5 million in funding to four nonprofit organizations working on innovative solutions to employment. The projects will work with people both inside and outside traditional employment—whether a budding entrepreneur, a freelancer, or someone who’s self-employed—to help them grow their sources of income and flexible benefits. Some of the projects may surprise you; they dive into new territory for us. But we see these grants as the beginning of a conversation on how we can collectively enhance opportunity for everyone.

Prototyping new portable benefits for low-wage workers: The Workers Lab is using Google’sdesign sprint methodology to design and prototype a new product that will deliver a portable benefit in the form of emergency funding for low-earning contractors and low-wage workers. Through this process, The Workers Lab will partner with leading gig platforms to test and scale this solution. This grant is co-funded with theRockefeller Foundation.

Understanding and improving the social safety net for freelance workers:The Aspen Institute Future of Work Initiative is coming up with new tools to help understand and administer support programs for gig workers. With Google.org’s support, Aspen is building a new digital resource that provides researchers, policymakers, and journalists with a one-stop shop for data about the gig workforce, while developing tools to help launch benefit programs geared to this growing business model.

Researching how to make the Earned Income Tax Credit work for more people:The Economic Security Project is researching how to modernize the Earned Income Tax Credit, which forms a key part of the social safety net. The research is looking at increasing expanding the credit further into the middle class, recognizing and rewarding unpaid work by covering caregivers and students, and offering an option to receive the credit on a monthly basis. With Google.org’s support, the Economic Security Project is looking at the cost and feasibility of these changes.

Using digital tools to experiment with new ways of organizing businesses:Co-operative businesses allow workers to pool resources, find clients, and mitigate the risks of working as independent contractors and gig workers. TheNew School’s Platform Co-op Consortium will partner with the Inclusive Design Research Centre at OCAD University to develop the Platform Co-op Development Kit, a platform to help people start just these kinds of co-operative businesses.

These organizations are at the front lines of creating a more resilient and responsive social contract. What we learn from their investments will help give policymakers new ideas and models and ideas that we hope can be applied more broadly. We look forward to sharing the results of these projects, and to being part of the conversation.

Introducing Machine Learning Practica

When I was a graduate student in cognitive science, I spent countless hours poring over videos and transcripts of natural language, looking for patterns in the data that could help me better understand how people learn words, concepts, and categories. Fast forward a few years, and I’m now a part of Google’s machine learning education team. We support the company’s mission to make AI beneficial to everyone by helping educate Googlers and others on how to build machine learning (ML) models that look for patterns in data in order to solve a variety of problems.

Back in February, our team shared our internal Machine Learning Crash Course (MLCC) with the world to help more developers learn to use ML. Since then, we’ve heard from many people who are hungry for more ML education. In particular, you want to learn from teams who have built and deployed ML models. What challenges and successes do product teams encounter? How do they problem solve, and what solutions work best?

With all this in mind, my colleagues and I collaborated with Google’s image model experts to develop the Machine Learning Practicum on Image Classification. This hands-on practicum contains video, documentation, and interactive programming exercises, illustrating how Google developed the state-of-the-art image classification model powering search in Google Photos. To date, more than 10,000 Googlers have used this practicum to train their own image classifiers to identify cats and dogs in photos.

Today, we’re sharing this interactive course with you on Learn with Google AI, Google’s online hub for educational resources on machine learning. First, you’ll walk through the basics of how image classification works, learning the building blocks of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Then you’ll build a CNN from scratch, learn how to prevent overfitting, and leverage pretrained models for feature extraction and fine-tuning.

We hope that you enjoy this course, learn something new, and think about new ways you can apply classification and CNNs to your own work or studies. We’re eager to hear your feedback, and to share more Machine Learning Practica and other educational content with you on Learn with Google AI in the future.

Google Science Fair 2018: Resources for educators to get ideas flowing

Every idea has the power to change our world. Since the first Google Science Fair in 2011, thousands of teens have shared their ideas with the world. Google Science Fairis a global online competition in partnership with Lego Education, National Geographic, Scientific American and Virgin Galactic. The competition inspires teens to solve real-world problems through the application of science, technology, engineering and math.

Submissions for this year’s Science Fair will open in 2018. But since teachers play such an important behind-the-scenes role in helping students test their hypotheses and prepare their submissions, we wanted to give teachers a head start on prepping for the competition. With that in mind, we’ve created a full library of new teaching materials and exercises to help get the ideas flowing.

Focused on the problem-solving process, these materials are flexible enough to adapt to virtually any teaching style, subject or grade. These resources have also been accredited with a Seal of Readiness from the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE), meaning they meet high standards focused on helping build foundational technology skills.

We can’t wait to see what your students come up with, and hope these resources spark their imagination!

Supporting CS educators in Europe, the Middle East and Africa

To ensure all young people have the opportunity to learn computer science (CS), it’s critical that educators are prepared and supported to teach with confidence and competence. Today we’re announcing grants to 31 universities and nonprofit organizations across 16 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to provide professional development for CS educators. These grants are part of Grow with Google’s commitment to train and equip teachers with the right skills to prepare the future workforce.

As digital technologies continue to evolve at an increasingly faster rate, it’s predicted that 21 million new jobs will be created in the next 10 to 15 years. CS has a crucial role in equipping students with the technical skills to embrace these new opportunities and career choices. CS education includes design, data, algorithms and the study of computer systems, while also promoting crucial skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and creativity. We believe every student should have the opportunity to learn CS; with that comes the responsibility of preparing teachers to deliver a CS curriculum with competence and confidence.

The grants announced today will enable research institutions, universities, and educational nonprofits to develop professional development (PD) programs specifically for CS teachers—those already teaching the subject and those completely new to the field. Through these PD programs, teachers will be able to grow their skills and knowledge to provide an exemplary educational experience for their students. Over the coming year, the 31 awardees in EMEA will provide a combined 500 hours of professional learning opportunities for 10,000 primary, secondary and pre-service teachers.

The funding announced today will support professional development for teachers in countries like Italy, where APS Programma il Futuro will provide professional development courses to approximately 150 primary and secondary school teachers. The grants will also allow awardees to respond to the increasing demand for CS PD in pre-service teacher education. In Ireland, for example, The University of Limerick will develop a new course to empower 50 pre-service teachers with CS skills and hands-on classroom resources.

We’re thrilled to congratulate these 2018 grant awardees across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prepared teachers are key to helping students embrace the CS opportunities of tomorrow, and we look forward to seeing how these grantees will advance CS education for the new global economy.

Taking action against scammers

We’re committed to building products and programs that help small businesses grow. Unfortunately, we continue to receive complaints from business owners about calls they receive claiming to be from Google. Often these calls are actually third-party companies who are trying to take advantage of them. Sometimes these scammers claim to be able to improve a business’ Google Search rankings, other times they charge money for services that Google offers for free. Understandably, these scams are frustrating for business owners and for us at Google.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission brought action against Point Break Media, LLC (and related entities and individuals) for misleading small businesses with threats to remove their listings from Google Search and Maps and demands that they pay for unwanted search optimization services.

In the past, we’ve taken various actions to try to stop these predatory practices. And today we’re taking additional steps to address the bad actors that are targeting businesses.

Specifically, as of today:

  • We’re taking legal action against Kydia Inc. d/b/a BeyondMenu, Point Break Media, LLC (and affiliated entities), and Supreme Marketing Group, Inc. d/b/a Small Business Solutions. We hope this sends the message to other scammers out there that we will not hesitate to take legal action against them.

  • We’ve developed new automated and manual techniques to better identify Google accounts tied to scam efforts. We’ve updated our policies, so that when we identify Google accounts tied to scams we’re better able to take action—whether that’s removing the accounts from our platforms entirely or limiting their capabilities.

  • We’ve created a new tool that lets business owners report scammy practices and policy violations, and provide the specific information needed for us to take action against these third parties.

  • We’ve started providing resources and education to local small business organizations and the partners we work with through our Get Your Business Online program, so they can empower their communities to identify, prevent, and report scams. To request a Google speaker to help educate your communities on how to avoid fraud and scams, complete and submit this form.

  • We’re launching the Google My Business Partners program. The program will give business owners a directory of trusted partners to choose from when they need help managing their listings.

We’ll continue to take action against these scams and the companies behind them by evolving our products and systems to identify bad actors, making policy changes, making law enforcement referrals and taking legal action when possible. But in addition to our efforts, here are a few things you can do immediately to protect yourself:

  • Verify whether someone is actually reaching out from Google.Often these fraudulent callers will use language like, “Google specialist” or “calling about or on behalf of Google.” To verify whether a caller is actually calling from Google, you can ask that they send you an email from a Google email account to further verify their identity. Anyone who works for Google should be able to send you an email from an @google.com email account. The Google Safety Center outlines additional tips.

  • Claim your business for free using Google My Business.Once you’ve claimed your business and actively manage your business information, you’re much less likely to be targeted by scammers. Here’s how to claim your business.

  • Know what’s possible and not possible when it comes to search engine marketing. There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. Any company that claims to be able to do so may be running a scam.

  • If you get an unwanted robocall, hang up the phone.Do not press any key, even if the voice recording prompts you to in order to speak with a live person or to be taken off the call list.

  • Report unwanted callers toGoogle, and also the FTC or theFCC.

  • Register your personal number with the National Do Not Call Registry (1-888-382-1222).

Small businesses are a crucial part of our economy, and fraud shouldn’t get in the way of helping them grow. We’re committed to protecting our users and taking action to combat scams that take advantage of Google My Business.

$100 million for skills and opportunity in Europe, Middle East, and Africa

In March, we pledged to help 1 million Europeans find a job or grow their business by 2020 through our Grow with Google program. Given the rapid digital transformation taking place in the world today, we want to make sure that everyone has the skills to both make the most of the opportunities and navigate the challenges that this presents.

Since we started Grow with Google in 2015, more than 214,000 people have found a new job or started a business thanks to the training offered. Making sure that our efforts are reaching the most disadvantaged requires working in partnership with organizations like OpenClassrooms and Inco, who are at the frontline of supporting those most at risk of missing out. That’s why we announced today at the Tech for Good summit in Paris that we’re committing $100 million over the next five years through Google.org to nonprofit organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa that are focused on skills and economic opportunity.

We particularly want to help organizations that focus on using technology and innovation to train people with new skills, connect job seekers with good jobs, and support workers in low-wage employment. According to the European Commission, 44 percent of working-age European adults don’t have basic digital skills. And in the Middle East and North Africa, only 38 percent of youth believe their education gives them the skills they need to enter the workforce. There is clearly a lot of work to do to make the opportunities of the digital economy are available to all, and the nonprofit sector—along with our partners in government, city councils, universities, and private-sector businesses—will play a vital role.

We’re always inspired by what people do when they have access to technology. And with our nonprofit partners, we’re doing everything we can to make sure technology brings opportunity to everyone.

New York Times: Using AI to host better conversations

The internet is supposed to be a place that fosters community and conversation—but all too often, it's a place where people are subjected to hateful speech and online harassment. More than 40 percent of Americans have personally experienced some degree of online harassment, and in 2017, 27 percent reported that they wouldn’t post a comment after witnessing harassment posted online. Meanwhile, the sheer volume of toxic commentary online has been enough to force prominent news organizations to shut down comments sections on their articles entirely.

The New York Times, however, refuses to let the trolls win. They’ve invested significant resources in community moderation to ensure that their readers have a productive place to discuss all sides of an issue and connect freely over the topics that matter most, without being subjected to abuse.

But those high standards are hard to scale. Careful moderation takes time, and in 2016 The New York Times was only able to enable comments on about 10 percent of articles. Eager to find a solution that would let them support comments across a greater swath of articles, they looked to machine learning to help.

They turned to Perspective, a free tool developed by Jigsaw and Google that uses machine learning to make it easier to host good conversations online. Perspective finds patterns in data to spot abusive language or online harassment, and it scores comments based on the perceived impact they might have on a conversation. Publishers can use that information to give real-time feedback to commenters and help human moderators sort comments more quickly. And that means news organizations and content publishers can grow their comment sections instead of turning them off, and can provide their readers with a better, more engaging community forum.

Using Perspective, The New York Times was able to triple the number of articles on which they offer comments, and now have comments enabled for all top stories on their homepage.

We hope more organizations consider using Perspective to help host better conversations, expand dialogue on important issues, and keep our digital town squares open. To learn more about Perspective, visit https://www.perspectiveapi.com.

Connecting IDE HDD through IDE/SATA to USB adapter, IDE not showing up in DiskMgmt

I am trying to install FreeHDBoot on a Maxtor 6Y120P harddrive, it is connected through IDE-to-USB to my laptop. It is powered by an AC Adapter that came with it, model# SY-002-5-12. Jumper is set to Master as well.

My problem is that the I can hear the drive spinning, but cannot see the drive in DiskMgmt, nor on WINHIIP(the tool for formatting to PS2 Boot drive).

What can I do to troubleshoot and pinpoint the cause of this issue?

edit: just tried using another harddrive to see if it could possibly be a cable issue, and this hard drive will also spin but not show up on disk mgmt(Albeit this is a MUCH older harddrive, Seagate ST351A/X lol.)

Large "TMP..." mystery file?

I tried to research different "mystery files" on Reddit and google but none really lined up with my specific files. I'd like to know if I can delete them, as they take up about 1 gig of space in my hard drive. They are 3 files (long string see below). I've been searching for a few days now and my knowledge is limited. Very odd as all files start with the string "tmp" Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

  • I ran Avira virus scan with no luck
  • I ran BleachBit with no luck
  • These files are in my secondary D drive.

How do I clone game display to 144hz monitor & 60hz projector - without losing FPS count

I have a lovely HP Omen 144Hz gaming monitor, that gives me great performance while gaming. I'd like to output the display simultaneously to my projector in my living room home theater set up. Right now I switch the connection from the monitor to the projector by physically switch from display port (the monitor) to HDMI (the projector) and unplugging whatever is not in use.

When gaming on the projector, I experience a noticeable performance drop - the FPS is locked at 60, because the refresh rate of the projector (a BENQ w1070). When using the 144hz HP Omen 25, I can get as high as 250 FPS.

I'd like to run both simultaneously, but without losing the refresh rate of the higher quality gaming monitor.

What is the best way to accomplish this? Also, should I be asking in another sub? Thanks, r/techsupport!

Computer won't boot sometimes

First time poster here, please excuse my formatting. There will be a tl;dr at the bottom.

Hey everyone. I have had this problem for the past 2 months or so and it has gotten worse. The first time I had the problem was when I installed my cpu cooler with three new fans. The computer booted up properly and I had no issues (ran temp tests and things and no problems, everything was normal). However, the first time I shut it down and tried to turn it back on, it would constantly turn on run the fans for 4 seconds and my GPU lights and mobo lights and then turn off, then try to boot again. This happened three times and then it turned on.

The next time I turned it off was around a week later. I had no issues with it while it was on but when it turned off it had the same problem. This time it took around 7 restarts. I looked up the issue and most people said it was a faulty power supply that was probably going to fail me. So I borrowed a power supply. Even with the new tested power supply I am having the same issue. It turns on, lights and fans turn on, and then it turns off and restarts again.

Also, the computer has no problem restarting if it is already on but only has problems when it turns off because it cant turn back on. The last time I turned it on successfully, it took around 25 minutes of it cycling restart.

Things I have tried: Switching RAM positions or removing RAM or using different RAM sticks.

Waiting up to an hour for it to turn on while cycling restarts.

Trying a different power source (took to a friend's house) and also a different power supply.

Tried resetting CMOS battery by taking it out and waiting a min before putting it back in.

I have also tried removing the GPU and tried using onboard graphics to test if it was that. The only thing I have not tried is removing the CPU Cooler and replacing it. I have tried replacing the thermal paste on it though. However, since the computer boots up at really low temperatures (28 deg C) and doesn't run hot (highest CPU hit was 59 deg C).

Computer Specs:

Operating System: Windows 10 (64bit)

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-SLI

CPU: i5-4690k (Never OC'd)

Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 1080TI

PSU OLD: EVGA NEX 650W 80+ Gold

PSU NEW: CORSAIR AX760 Platinum

RAM: 8GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE 2133MHz (2x4GB)

Old CPU Cooler before problems: Corsair H90

Current CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken x61

Case: NZXT Source 530

Couple SSDs, Couple of Hard drives

Total of 6 case fans (two on the radiator for NZXT cooler, two on the bottom of case, one behind the cpu and one in the front of my case.

Please help me, thanks!

tl;dr: Computer specs are above in a list. My computer has no problems staying on and operating at high intensity (gaming/mining). It only has problems turning on from being completely off.

Edit: Spacing

Way to test GPU that isn't connected to my desktop?

I have a graphics card that got knocked a few weeks ago and isn't working a week later - can't run HDMI through it after testing it (been using D-Sub since I started but occasionally used HDMI and now.it doesn't work). I'm unsure as to whether or not it's the graphics card or what connects it to the motherboard that's the issue, so if I can connect my graphics card to something else and see if it works there, then it'll easy to figure out the problem.

Is there a way/method I can test my possibly broken GPU?

My computer is about a year and a half old and has given me no problems until now. I have barely moved it in that time. One day I tried to wake it up from hibernate mode and there was nothing. My keyboard and other usb devices were still lit up but no fans or lights in the pc would start.

My friend who usually helps me with tech things is not available right now, so I have to pick up the reigns and start figuring out this mess by myself. Any ideas as to what might be the problem would be very helpful or tips on how I can troubleshoot it myself. Thanks for the help!

Is my Nintendo Switch defective? What's going on?

Hey fellers! i have a fairly new Nintendo Switch, and I have a few games both in physical copy and digital download.

Recently I got a micro SD card to expand my memory, formatted it, and then downloaded Mario Odyssey from the online store. Now every time I open the game, it crashes saying the data is corrupted. I have deleted, and redownloaded the game about 4 times now, and it still keeps happening.

Another thing to mention is I am currently in China, and have no way of contacting Nintendo Support. So i figured I would ask the fine people here. If this is the wrong subreddit I apologize. Thanks in advance

Getting lots of timeouts on various browsers on various devices for working websites

I'm getting a lot of timeouts recently to various websites, and it is not connected to a specific device or browser. I know the websites are online because tools like http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ report the various websites I've been getting timeouts from being up, and I don't see people complaining online.

Restarting the router does not help. I tried switching the dns on my laptop to see if that fixed anything. It didn't. I tried google's dns and cloudflare's dns(8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1)

EDIT: What I find strange is that pinging it does work and does not show abnormal latencies. E.G. I might not be able to access sourceforge, or go to any i.imgur.com/somephotostring on any device's browser, but I can ping the servers just fine with normal latencies.

I'm looking for a way to find the problem and solve it. I have no idea where to start.

Want to empty Oracle 10g Express Database to free up all the memory and get a fresh start.

Hello tech wizards

I am using Primavera P6 v8.3 for project scheduling

I've been having a series of issues with memory management that shouldn't really be happening as the size of the files i'm using shouldn't really be approaching the 4g capacity of 10g express.

The memory issues have been preventing me from copying/deleting/creating projects etc and the errors are getting frustrating. This morning it kept me from logging in altogether so I went to the database homepage and google-fu'd enough memory space to log in and backup my files.

All of my relevant files are backed up and all I really want to do is erase all the memory from my database without destroying the database itself so all I have to do is import my projects back into the database and hit the ground running. the last thing I want to do is reconfigure a new database because it's unnecessarily difficult with this software for someone who isn't the best at, you know, database configuring.

So basically I just want to free up all the memory and start again, i just don't know what to do.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I have problems with turning on my laptop

Basically, when I turn it on, it usually turns off a few seconds later, or freezes or the screen is black and freezes. All I can do then is take off the battery and put it in again. Sometimes there are some visual bugs and then it freezes. Black screen is what happens the most, I always need to turn my laptop on like 5 times until it works. Everything else is fine, if it finally turns on and stays on without freezing for at least 5 minutes, it's ok and it won't turn off later, until I restart it.

I only use this laptop at home so it's almost always plugged in, often without the battery but lately it often won't start without the battery anyway. But like I said, once it's on for at least 5 minutes, it can work for hours without any problems.

What could be wrong? Thanks in advance and if you need more info, let me know.

Internet says “connected/good” everywhere (even in router settings) but I can’t access the internet...

Have to post from my phone since it’s the only way I can currently access the internet, please keep that in mind.

I live in an apartment, and for the last year (or more) my internet has worked just fine. Ethernet from the wall, into my router, 2nd Ethernet from the router into my PC. No modem required for my apt complex. This has always worked.

I leave for a few days, come back and shit has hit the fan. Never had this issue. Everything says I’m connected to the internet, but I can’t actually connect to the internet whatsoever. When I hover my mouse over the network icon in the bottom right corner of my desktop by the clock (Windows 10) it says “Internet access.” My router login page says “Internet status: Good.” Troubleshooter finds no issues because it’s “connected” and “working” (even though it’s not). It says my WiFi is working too - but it’s not. I can connect to the WiFi on my devices (such as my phone) but still, no internet.

My DNS server for the last year or so has been Google’s (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) and it worked just fine. I’ve tried setting that to automatic, tried setting it to 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1 (from that Linus video a few months back, just to try), back to automatic, back to Google, etc. Nothing.

I’ve flushed the DNS.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the Ethernet software or whatever some YouTube video with an Indian guy told me to do.

Tried netsh int ip reset

I’ve tried a LOT in the command prompt

It’s not an area outage - I’ve experienced that before and it has some different symptoms, plus this has lasted much longer than a “typical” outage in my area.

Please help, I’m at a total loss of what to do right now to fix this... thank you.

How to turn off Default Controller functions in Windows 10?

So, for context: I like using JoyToKey for a lot of web browsing. When I'm watching youtube, or reading a book, I want to scroll with my controller instead of sit up and use the mouse/keyboard.

By default (ie: without JoyToKey), the controller interacts with certain menus of Windows 10. So, when I go to Music, pressing left and right navigates my songs, while pressing A changes the playing song; when using 'windows'+tab to navigate my various windows, pressing left moves left, or right moves right.

My problem is this: I can't use JoyToKey to interact with certain parts of Windows 10, because when I do the bits of it that already do stuff also act. So if I press windows-tab and press the left button, JoyToKey registers it as 'left', but so does Windows 10, so I end up moving twice and opening the wrong window. Or if I'm listening to music and move the analog stick down (the analog stick being my mouse), the music rewinds, because Windows 10 registers me as pressing a reset button or something.

Is there any way to disable all default controller functions entirely, so I can use JoyToKey without worry? Is this even a Windows 10 problem, or am I mis-attributing this issue?

(PS: all steam settings regarding controllers are off, and windows does this stuff even with Steam off, so that isn't the issue. Ease of Access won't help afaik - it's mostly just keyboard configuration or mouse configuration, or otherwise unrelated. The only controller settings I found relate to calibration, which isn't quite what I want.)

Installed used CPU, now PC immediately shuts off after powering on

I have a Z97 Anniversary MOBO and a G3258. I decided to get a used i5 4690k from eBay and a Cooler Master Hyper 212 CPU fan to later over clock the CPU and keep it cool.

Took the PC apart, disconnected everything, carefully removed the old CPU, put the new one in making sure to now touch either the top or the bottom of the CPU, put some arctic silver on the CPU before installing the CPU fan according to the instructions that came with the box. When I plugged everything back in and tried to power it on, it shut off about a second after I pressed the power button. The fans start spinning but obviously turn off when the computer shuts off.

Not sure where to go from here. Is the CPU bad? Did I not connect something properly? If I could get some assistance/guidance, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading.

Sorry if this isnt the right sub-reddit for this but i need someone to ask, please direct me to the correct sub-reddit if it isnt right.

Ok, my CPU is constantly running from 50c to 75c even when i've just got a mmoprg (rs3) and a browser open (6 tabs on browser).

My PC shut itself down 3 times last night I'm guessing from the heat.

Also, one of my fans is static at the back and wont move so I'm guessing this is causing it maybe? due to excessive heat.

What should I do?

If this helps:

Computer only recognises harddrive if booting goes into BIOS first?

Bit of a bizarre one here.

Last year I transplanted my rig into a new case - for the first week or so, everything was perfectly fine.

However, since then, I noticed that if I ever turned my computer off or restarted it - it would fail to find the harddrive with my windows installation on it upon booting. "What the fuck?!" I would exclaim, so I'd reboot again and go into BIOS...

When in BIOS, I can see it listed. I can see the boot priority, the whole nine yards. If I then exit BIOS with a good ol 'exit without saving any changes', it will then reboot and boot into windows perfectly fine.

tl;dr computer only boots if going via bios to make it recognise the hard drive, otherwise, no boot.

I have absolutely zero idea where to start.

GPU clocks drop to abysmal values

Hello everybody,

I need your opinion on something.

I used to have a gtx670 but lately I had constant freezes in games and even when idle paired with "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding" errors. Mu temps were fine and memory looks fine. I also formatted my machine but the problems remained.

I assumed that the problem is with my GPU so I unburied my old gtx 285 card to test. At the first glance with 285 the system is more stable. No freezes or BSODs. Occasionally I notice a huge frame drop, that was only solved after a reboot.

I used some monitoring tools and today, when in game, I got "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." and after that my FPS were once again terrible.

What I saw in the monitor is that my GPUs clocks were dramatically down and were staying there no matter what. As expected a reboot fixed it.

On the left side of the picture above, my normal speed. On the right side, the speed when the problem occurred.

Am I right to suspect the PSU? I got a fairly old silverstone strider.

New drive has appeared on PC

I've recently found that new drive has appeared on my PC. I noticed this after the latest Windows 10 update but I'm not sure if the two things are linked. The drive appears to be empty but when looking at the properties it has 411mb of used space and 38.6mb of free space - this is causing a very annoying notification that I have low disk space on this drive that I know nothing about.

Any ideas anyone? Am I safe to just "remove" the drive?

Also, it seems that I don't have any options when I right click the D: drive.

How do I get rid of the 'Visit New Reddit' button that appeared a few days ago on my subreddit bar? Image inside.

This issue is a bit different, so let me know if I should go somewhere else for help.

This button showed up a few days ago promoting the new appearance for Reddit. I like the way old Reddit looks and decided to ignore it, but the button is obscuring some of my subreddits.

I tried getting rid of it by clicking on the button and then opting out of the new look for Reddit, but it still remains there. It even shows up on other Reddit sites like beta.reddit and old.reddit, and it is getting on my nerves.

Any ideas on what to do to try and get rid of it? Any help is much appreciated.

So recently I got this problem, which happened out of nowhere and I have no clue how to fix it.

My microphone is not working, when I go to Sounds and Recording devices, no bars appear when I try

I can hear everything and bars are appearing. I tried updating driver, uninstalling, unplugging mic, restarting pc

and what else not. Nothing seemed to help me.

I'll be really thankful if someone actually knows what to do.

Start making your business more accessible using Primer

My graphics card is very confusing.

I play Overwatch a lot using a 1050 Ti. I play on a 1080p 144hz monitor and I like to keep my framerates high, so I prefer to play on low settings. The thing I've been noticing though is that my FPS stays around the same range and drops below 144fps very constantly regardless of the settings I use. I could be using 50% render and all low settings or 100% render and ultra settings and I'd still drop to 120~ or so during fights and I don't understand why when it should be easier to run. Is my graphics card just slacking off because it thinks the settings are too easy to run?

Accidentally swapped 2 customer hard drives, 1 holding the other hostage. Help?

I did a job for someone about 4 years ago--I don't really remember the details but apparently the laptop was a brick, I took it apart and futzed with it and it continued to be a brick. I did this as a favor--was not paid for it.

At any rate, a friend of mine reached out to me the other day (who I had done work for around the same time), having received a call from this other individual, who had apparently taken their old laptop to a big box computer repair place, paid some money to get the data off the hard drive, and realized that it wasn't their hard drive, but that of my friend.

The friend had had me transfer data from their old computer to a new one and I evidently put their old hard drive into the other computer.

Now the person with their hard drive is sort of trying to shake my friend down as well as me--demanding that the fee that they paid to the big box computer repair place be paid and I find and provide their hard drive (from 4 years ago). I'm hoping that I can find their hard drive, give it to them, pony up the money, and get my friend's hard drive back.

HERE'S MY QUESTION:

If I don't find the hard drive in question, and the person decides to be nasty--do I have any recourse to keep them from getting the hard drive back from the big box computer repair place? It is currently with them.

TL:DR; accidentally put my friend's old hard drive into someone else's busted computer 4 years ago. They recently went in to have the hard drive data pulled and are trying to hold it hostage. Can I keep them from getting it back?

My Graphics Card Has Plummeted in Quality

Sorry, I don't really know where to post this other than here. What feels like an overnight thing, 2 weeks ago my graphics card stopped performing well. It's a Gigabyte Radeon TX RX 560, and was working really well up until now.

Since it's stopped performing well, Photoshop can't use lighting effects as it cannot find sufficient GPU, Premiere Pro's playback is off, even when rendered, and games like Far Cry 3 and Resident Evil 7 are 15-20FPS at their lowest settings, especially the former.

Also, another important thing I just remembered is that I can't play HDMI through the video card - only VGA through the motherboard now, so maybe that helps decide what's wrong.

I had a friend who helped me build the PC come by and see if he could do anything, but after disconnecting it, cleaning it up and looking for drivers to update/reinstall it, nothing changed. My girlfriend accidentally tripped over and knocked the PC over a few weeks ago, so I believe that may have been the likely cause, but that was a week before a nosedive in performance.

If anyone has any troubleshooting it'd be much appreciated, as I don't know if it's the card itself, or maybe I knocked the motherboard and something that is in relation to the graphics card. I reckon that if it's unfixable I'll likely invest in the same or a new graphics card, but idk, I'll see what happens.

If anyone needs more details I can try to give them.

Question Regarding Work Wifi

Hey there-

A brief moment of panic overtook me so I wanted to reach out to this sub.

So I'm currently volunteering on a campaign. To my knowledge, they have no IT department but bought a wifi system for the temporary campaign headquarters that they've set up.

I was logged in to the work wifi on my personal laptop and was waiting for my colleague to send me a link, and it wasn't coming up so I checked my Spam folder. In my Spam folder was a newsletter from a legitimate site called "Clips4Sale" from which I had purchased a porn clip one time, though (as an ancillary point) I've since deleted it for religious reasons pertaining to my faith's injunctions about pornography. Without thinking, because I'm trying to put the "porn chapter" of my life behind me, I clicked onto the "unsubscribe" button at the bottom of the newsletter and it brought me to a generic page from which I could unsubscribe from further newsletters. Immediately realizing I was on work's wifi, I closed out of the browser in a panic.

To be clear, the website was not displaying video of any kind, nor would I seek such things out, and I had absolutely zero intention of watching anything while at work (and, more broadly, in my personal life.) I have been panicking ever since that whoever runs the wifi (I don't have enough technical knowledge to put it more precisely) will see that I clicked on that site on my personal laptop and think the worst.

I know bringing this up to someone out of the blue would be both uncomfortable and socially uncouth so I bring it here to see if anyone can ease my troubled mind (or perhaps convince me I still ought to be worried).

Thank you.

Hi everyone.

Yesterday I installed 1803 and everything seemed to work but today I tried to record some audio and I realiced that the microphone didnt pick any sound. I tried with the microphone on my webcam (also uses USB) and it didnt pick any audio too.

When i conect a microphone via jack it works, but audio recording via USB dont work.

Any help?

PD: Sorry for my bad English, it isnt my first language.

EDIT: OK I SOLVED IT, it was a problem with Privacy settings.

Microphone not detected anymore? Sound settings or features not working? Check Settings > Privacy Microphone and test if "Let apps use my microphone" resolves the issue.

Malware from hell

So usually I’m pretty good at removing viruses, but this one is proving to be a complete bitch. My svchost.exe has duplicated itself like 30 times, my browser opens up a scam page every few minutes, and when I came home my CPU usage was 100%, Memory 85% and over 70 tabs were opened. When I try to search for “virus removal” or something like it, my browser closes itself (happens in all them). Do I have a combination of malware from hell? My CPU usage is always 68% and a full scan from both Malwarebytes and Windows Defender couldn’t find anything. Please for the love of God help me.

Three port ethernet wall jack only has one working port

Hey all, kind of a weird question here. As the title says I have a three port ethernet wall jack (looks exactly like this here) and only one (top left to be specific) actually works. When I say works I mean when I plug an ethernet cable into the other two none of my devices recognize it has an ethernet cable plugged into it and therefore have no internet connection. When plugged into the working one they all instantly have one.

My room does not have an ethernet hook up and wifi is not working too well for gaming on my PS4 so I decided to run a "ghetto" line from the living room to my room only to discover that only the one works. It wouldn't be a problem if that one that works wasn't being used for our DIRECTV situation.

What could be the reasoning behind this? Any ideas as to how to fix this? My internet company is pretty non helpful without paying a $150 "diagnostic fee" plus whatever repair may have to be done to it so I figured I would come ask here first.

Thanks in advance!

Streaming android phone audio to windows 10

First of all, I'm having the exact same issue as in this old thread

Essentially, I want to be able to have my computer act as bluetooth speakers for my phone (Xiaomi Mi A1). My computer has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168, which from looking into it sounds like it handles the bluetooth duties for the pc. All my drivers are up to date.

Have there been any new developments since then to allow this functionality? Are there any alternative methods to stream audio to my pc from my phone over local wifi or even usb? Ideally with minimal lag.

Question for those who have upgraded to 1803

So I recently upgraded my pc to the newest 1803 update, but noticed a strange issue that caused my data drives to dissappear from the built in defragment and optimize program. Now I like to keep on top of this as I have quite a large amount of storage, so for me this was an issue as I could now only see my SSD and not the RAID setup.

So I decided that it was best to reset, and then try again in case something just went wrong. This still produced the same result.

So I decided to take the more drastic option and wipe literally everything and start all over again. Just in case it was somthing weird on the current install. Sadly however this has still not worked. I just wondered if anyone else has encountered this? The drives still work perfectly, disk management finds them, the SMART readings are fine, sfc/scannow doesn't find any issues and an error check done when restarting the pc couldn't find anything wrong.

I know it's a minor thing but I just don't understand how it's gone. I've even forced the services to run on boot and they don't find it. Yet if I use a third party program, they will work no problem. The only thing is I'd rather not use this, as some can be a bit funny with SSDs, and tbh I like the windows one.

Disabled Secure Boot, Stuck in Grub Rescue

I had deleted Kali Linux about a year ago and kept getting a Secure Boot Violation which I eventually ignored since I was able to reach Windows anyways. Fast forward and I've done a clean install in hopes of addressing some bad blocks in my HDD. My 100% disk usage was "fixed" (at least for a day until Windows Update and superfetch went haywire).

As a genius I decided to turn off the Secure Boot option in the BIOS menu since I was sure this might help me somehow.... Now im stuck in the grub rescue screen.

I did some googling and read about booting with CD/DVD/USB but im currently unable to make one where I am. I do have the flash drive I used to do the clean install for Windows 10 but the grub rescue says no media found. Is there anyway of just going back and magically enabling Secure Boot again and go about my way or am I SOL?

Few things you might want to know: The Kali Linux partition is no more. Back in the day I had to do the ls/set prefix/insmod etc.but that no longer works (probably because the Kali partition was cleared). The only computer I might have access to is a PS4.

Bonus Question: What would be the fastest/reliable way of marking bad blocks? I tried chkdsk but it lasted half a day and it didn't do much of anything but then again I might've botched it up somehow.

Thank you for reading.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL netio.sys - problem persists even after multiple fixes

Hi everyone,

I've been having a BSOD of DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL while trying to open Overwatch.

From BlueScreenViewer, the problem seems to be caused by driver NETIO.SYS and address NETIO.SYS+12f29.

I have used Driver Booster 5 to update all my drivers.

I've tried doing sfc scannow - it showed the AMD64\CNBJ2530.DPB as the problem. I repaired the problem using the image device, and now sfc scannow shows that there is no integrity problems. However, the problem persisted.

I tried to repair using chkdsk as well, and my drive was repaired but I'm still getting the same problem.

I have also run my antivirus software and no threats were found but the problem persisted.

I have also run Windows Update.

Anybody can help?

My PC suddenly boots up into Gigabyte - UEFI Dualbios.

https://i.imgur.com/eQizxUp.jpg

I have to scroll right into Save & Exit, then pick up the Boot Override, the first choice of my main Hard Drive.

I can't seem to find a way to save this settings so to avoid booting up into it again.

Is there a way to fix this? I just want my PC to boot up into Win10 as it normally does.

Thank you. :-)

Certain combination of headphones and phone doesn't work

Hi, i have this weird issue, where my headphones (sony mdr x70) don't get recognized by my phone (sony xz premium 1). The headphones were working fine until it stopped completely, the sound comes from speaker now. There were no signs, like losing signal for a short period or losing the sound from a single side, it just stopped.

I can get them work but only for a short period by spinning the jack into a certain position, and even that takes a long time and only lasts for a few seconds. I also cleaned my phone jack but it didn't changed anything.

The weird thing is the headphones are working on every smartphone or laptop i've tested on, and every type of headphones i tested on my phone work too. It sucks because those are my favourite headphones.

Can there be a mismatch between them or is it some other issue.

Laptop charging problems

I'd like to get my paperweight gaming laptop up and running again. It's an ASUS G74Sx and needs a new DC jack as well as a charger.

A lot of the chargers I am seeing are over $50 which seems kind of steep, but maybe I'm just being unrealistic. I originally had a 150w charger but forums recommend going for a 180w, which I've not seen listed with compatibility for my laptop:

150w

180w

I'm also noticing a lot of these DC jacks turn out to be "fake" or not compatible. Here are a few of the ones I'm looking at:

Amazon

eBay

DCpowerjacks.net

The one on Amazon looks promising. Anything to be concerned about?

Any help finding what I need (and cheap) would be appreciated. Also I'm Canadian so I can't get much of anything from eBay.com (which has likely the best selection).

My girlfriend got a new Samsung Galaxy S9+. Her phone does not "wake up" whenever she receives texts or other notifications.

Basically title. she got a new phone and her screen does not light up at all whenever she gets texts. Not even the edge light. All of her notification settings are turned on and there is no reason for this to be happening. I have looked into the problem and found nothing. The guy at the store suggested this is just an update issue but I do not believe this, and her two week phone return grace period is ending soon.

Samsung Galaxy J7: When on the internet, at times, a message will appear warning of viruses I supposedly have on my phone. Is this for real, or is it bait?

These messages look legit, but I'm not convinced they are. The only way to get rid of them is to either hit "OK" or close the tab. I never hit "OK", I always just close the tab. I'm not on any seedy sites when this happens. One message said the viruses were the result of visiting "adult" sites. I don't look at porn on my phone. What is up with this? Thank you!

Issue with an SD card for a phone.

Hello, so a friend of mine bought a SD card that is 512 GB's, but everytime I try to add stuff to it to fully transfer all of the files to the SD card via the computer, the computer wants me to reformat it to EXFAT Every... Single... Time.., then when we put it back into her phone to try to transfer everything via possibly cloud software... the phone suddenly doesn't recognize the SD card anymore, but once I reformat it via the computer and put it into her phone, it reads it and acts fine... unless the cycle repeats... anyway to keep this from happening? This is getting quite annoying, and we really need this SD card because they are always using storage constantly and there is a lot of files to save on the SD card... Thanks for the help btw the phone is a Samsung Galaxy Halo

Internet has been slow, but inconsistently

I live in the Philippines. I use an etherent cable and have 100 mpbs internet (confirmed by speedtest.net despite super long load times) with unlimited data. For the past couple of days, a lot of websites such as reddit load very slowly for me. Youtube and Netflix work well for me, but I have mixed results with other websites. For example, some videos on pornhub load at a glacial pace while others load with no issues. Also, Daily Mail's videos load just fine. I'm also having trouble with loading photos and text.

I contacted my ISP, but they were of no help. I know one of their undersea cables was damaged about 2.5 weeks ago, but my internet was fine up until 2 days ago. I'm confused about what the problem could be because my internet works well with some websites, but terribly with others. Any thoughts?

Turbo Boost not working, and only 2 cores functioning on a 6700k?

Games like CSGO and Overwatch are considerably choking (40-60% fps drops) more than they used to over the last 2-3 days, and upon checking performance stats seem to be eating up tons of CPU, from around 70-90%, where it used to take up only 20-30% at max (On a 6700k). I have also reinstalled GPU drivers, (GTX 1080) which made no discernable difference. I think this may be due to the new windows update, which I noticed made alt tabbing in and out of games take far longer than it used to. Then, a huge breakthrough. After scanning through all my stats, I discovered two things. https://imgur.com/a/UXTYeZP It says that I only have 2 cores, with 4 logic cores, although the 6700k is a quad core CPU, and I am absolutely certain that it has been running at 4 cores/8 logical cores previously. The other thing, is that it has not been turbo boosting at all, and stays at a constant 4.01GHz all the time. This is super weird, and I don't really understand what is happening here. I probably need some new drivers or something, but can't find any that seem to be what I need. Thanks.

RESOLVED: go to "System Configuration > Services > Advanced Options > deselect "Number of processors" Sorry about the fuss. Hopefully this solves the problem for anyone else!

Samsung Galaxy S7 fast charge stopped working

Around a week ago fast charge stopped working on my Galaxy S7. I made sure that it was switched on in my settings, but it still would take 5 hours to charge. I went to Best buy and they told me it was a battery problem and I should get it replaced, I also looked on the internet and decided that I would get my battery replaced. So today I get it replaced and I still have the issue. Does anyone know if there is a fix for it? Or should I buy a new phone?

[SUGGESTED READING] Official Malware Removal Guide

Official Malware Removal Guide

by: /u/cuddlychops06 for /r/techsupport // Updated: September20th, 2017.

Changelog: 9/20/17 - Updated some screenshots, removed JRT recommendation - see below

If you suspect you are infected with Crypto malware (Cryptowall, Cryptolocker, TeslaCrypt, etc) DO NOT follow this guide! Please make a post instead. Your files are at stake.

Purpose & Scope of this Guide:

This guide is designed to assist you in removing malware from an infected system that successfully boots. If your computer is completely unable to boot due to malware, please make a post, as this guide will not help you. If you perform the following steps exactly as described, this will solve your problem in over 90% of scenarios. That said, not all malware is created equal, and not all malware removal tools are created equal. The tools recommended in this guide were picked because of their high success and low failure rates, measured on a very large scale. However, there will be times that this guide fails in removing malware. If that is the case, please make a post for further assistance, stating that this guide was unsuccessful. It is recommended to only accept advice from a “Trusted” technician. I am writing this guide in layman’s terms so that most people will be able to understand it with ease.

Disclaimer:

The following instructions are recommendations only. You take full responsibility for any steps you choose to perform on your computer. While the following recommendations are performed without issue on countless machines, there is always a risk of damaging your Operating System or experiencing data loss on any machine. It is solely YOUR responsibility to save all work and back up any and all important data on your system before proceeding. Also note that once a computer has been compromised with malware, it should not be considered clean until a complete reformat has taken place.

Malware Remediation Steps:

Before proceeding, go into your browser’s extensions and remove all suspicious items. Also go into your browser’s settings and remove any default search providers and unusual homepages. If you are unsure how to do this, proceed to Step 1.

Download and run the following tools in this order. Run all tools unless otherwise instructed. All tools should be run in Normal Mode (not Safe Mode) unless you are unable to boot Normal Mode, or the scans fail in Normal Mode. All tools must be run under an Administrator account. Do not remove any tool-generated logs in the event a helper needs you to post them to further assist you.

1) Run rkill.com. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to finish. Do not reboot when done.

  • Kills running malicious processes

  • Removes policies in the registry that prevent normal OS operation

  • Repairs file extension hijacks

2) Download an updated copy Malwarebytes 3.0. Turn on the “Scan for Rootkits” option. Then, run a “Scan

  • Successfully removes the vast majority of infections
  • Has an industry-leading built-in rootkit/bootkit scanning engine
  • Has built-in repair tools to fix damage done by malware

3) Run Malwarebytes ADWCleaner using the “Scan” option.

  • Removes majority of adware, PuPs, Toolbars, and Browser hijacks
  • Fixes proxy settings changed by malware
  • Removes certain non-default browser settings

NOTE: It is no longer necessary to run JRT. The JRT definitions have been rolled into ADWCleaner by Malwarebytes. JRT no longer provides additional benefit.

Optional, Advanced Step (only run if previous tools fail to solve problem):

4) Run Sophos HitmanPro

  • Here is HitmanPro.

HitmanPro is a phenomenal "second-opinion" malware scanner.

Please note: If malware has prohibited you from browsing the web or downloading files, you can try running the NetAdapter Repair Tool with all options checked which will attempt to restore your internet connection & default browser settings. You may have to download these tools on another computer and move them to a flash drive that you can plug into the infected machine.

Have adware or spyware on your Mac?

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac (formerly Adware Medic). Please make a post if it is unsuccessful.

If you have run all of the above tools successfully, you should be malware-free. If you are still experiencing problems, please make a post in /r/techsupport for further assistance.

Follow-up Steps (highly recommended):

  • Using a computer that has not been infected, change passwords to all your online accounts.
  • Consider enabling two-factor authentication.
  • Install a better anti-virus. See recommendations below.

What is malware?

Malware is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. [Source: Wikipedia.com]

How did I get infected?

It is difficult to track down the source of an infection. Most infections are actually given permission to run unknowingly by the user. It is recommended to keep User Account Control turned on and never give access to something you do not trust or did not open. Many other infections come via exploits in your browser or browser plug-ins on websites you visit. Always be very careful what you install. Make sure you trust the source implicitly. When downloading programs, always use the publisher’s website directly.

How to prevent future infections:

Be very careful what you download and install. Keep programs like Java & Flash up-to-date, but do so using their official websites or Ninite installers. Use Unchecky to prevent accidental installation of adware & spyware during product installations. Make sure Windows is kept up-to-date as well. Many Windows updates patch exploits and vulnerabilities in your operating system. Most infections are active because the user has unknowingly given it Administrative permission to install and run. The first line of defense starts with you.

Having trouble viewing my media from my Smart TV after Windows 10 update.

Overnight my PC had a Windows 10 update and I noticed that homegroups were removed. Coincidentally my Roku enabled TV is now not finding any of my video files that I have on my PC. Normally I have them in a folder under This PC>Videos but they are not showing up when I use my TV. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? I'm pretty sure I've enabled sharing on the folder but it didn't seem to do anything.

The tv is a TCL tcl 49s405 btw. Thank you.

Please help me destroy Cortana

I've tried everything. I consider myself a "power user" however, this is the first time I've not been able to solve something like this. I dont care what the repercussions are via search etc. It needs to die. On fresh restart, the process uses 67%+ CPU cycles (i7 6700K @ 4.8Ghz OC). Unacceptable.

I've used gpedit.msc and disabled her.

I've also used all the various regedits around.

This is pissing me off because i know how to Google and RTFM, but my case seems unique. I cant have this big an overhead as i have VM services that I've balanced my system resources towards.

Any advice reddit?

TeamViewer randomly downloaded to my PC, have I been hacked?

Was browsing YouTube for a bit, went down to get dinner and when I came back up I found team viewer in my downloads, it was only the installer so I deleted it but still changed my passwords just in case. In my history I checked that it was downloaded about half an hour after I left my computer, and about 20 minutes before I came back so I certainly didn't accidentally click something and assumed malicious intent. Only thing I don't get is if hackers had access to my PC, why did they download teamviewer if they already seemed to have control of the PC, also how do I stop this from happening and is there any way that my PC could have been comprised that allowed his to happen, I haven't downloaded anything recently so is there a logical explanation to how this occurred and how I could prevent it?

Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Enterprise after reset? Plus activation popup?

So my PC was originally Windows 8 Pro, and when the 10 upgrade came, I received Windows 10 Pro. After a couple years, I had some problems with BSODs, so I decided to do a full reset/reinstall of Windows + wiping my drives. I've done multiple resets in the past, but in my latest reset (5/14/18), during the setup I noticed I wasn't able to sign in to my personal Microsoft account. The only options were to either use a school/work email address or set up a local account. I picked local, and was able to sign into my Microsoft account later. Now, on the bottom right of my desktop is line of text that simply says: "Windows 10 Enterprise." Occasionally a settings menu would popup telling me to go to settings to activate Windows, but the settings tab it leads me to is completely blank.

What happened? Is this normal? How do I solve the activation message issue?

Mouse only works with USB 3.0

Since the last windows 10 update (1803) my mouse, razer deathadder 3.5G, stopped working properly on ports USB 2.0.

If I connect it to a USB 3.0 port the sensitivity and lights definitions from razer synapse are properly applied, If I connect it on a port USB 2.0 the default definitions are used.

On both ports, the razer synapse can detect the mouse, but only applies it on the port 3.0.

I have tried to reinstall razer synapse and the problem persists. I have tried it on another computer with windows 8.1 and it works fine on ports 2.0.

PS4 Wired Internet Slow

Hi everyone,

For some reason the internet is extremely slow on my PS4.

When I run a speed test on it I’m getting less than 1Mbps while other wired devices on the same network are getting around 40Mbps.

Even wireless devices are getting between 36Mbps and 40Mbps.

I’ve switched the PS4 over to WiFi for now as that has a much better download speed than wired for some reason.

Additional Info:

This issue has persisted for a couple of days now but I noticed late last night the download speed went back up to about 40Mbps without me doing anything but then this morning it went to garbage again.

Any ideas what might be causing this issue and how I can solve it?

Thanks for your time.

Anyone have any suggestions as to where we can purchase Windows 10 and Office 365 knowledge base articles. We can't get Microsoft to respond to our inquiries.

Bought a 1080 graphics card. Need help finding out if I got screwed out of my money

Bought a GTX GeForce 1080 off offerup. Guy showed me it "working" prior to buying it. However after installing the device in my tower (along with my 970) it briefly works.

Anytime I run a benchmark like 3D mark, or play a game, it will run for a couple minutes, then I'll hear a "device disconnected" sound, and everything goes black on both my monitors. Computer continues to run, but plugging my hdmi into my 970 or my DVI into onboard graphics, I get nothing. I'm forced to manual restart the computer.

After restarting like that, it takes a couple of reboots until the computer gets passed my motherboards "please wait" screen.

I'm at work but will provide as much information as possible until I'm home and can give more information.

Does this sound like an issue with the graphics card, or with my computer? Thanks in advance.
