[SUGGESTED READING] Official Malware Removal Guide

Official Malware Removal Guide

by: /u/cuddlychops06 for /r/techsupport // Updated: September20th, 2017.

Changelog: 9/20/17 - Updated some screenshots, removed JRT recommendation - see below

If you suspect you are infected with Crypto malware (Cryptowall, Cryptolocker, TeslaCrypt, etc) DO NOT follow this guide! Please make a post instead. Your files are at stake.

Purpose & Scope of this Guide:

This guide is designed to assist you in removing malware from an infected system that successfully boots. If your computer is completely unable to boot due to malware, please make a post, as this guide will not help you. If you perform the following steps exactly as described, this will solve your problem in over 90% of scenarios. That said, not all malware is created equal, and not all malware removal tools are created equal. The tools recommended in this guide were picked because of their high success and low failure rates, measured on a very large scale. However, there will be times that this guide fails in removing malware. If that is the case, please make a post for further assistance, stating that this guide was unsuccessful. It is recommended to only accept advice from a “Trusted” technician. I am writing this guide in layman’s terms so that most people will be able to understand it with ease.

Disclaimer:

The following instructions are recommendations only. You take full responsibility for any steps you choose to perform on your computer. While the following recommendations are performed without issue on countless machines, there is always a risk of damaging your Operating System or experiencing data loss on any machine. It is solely YOUR responsibility to save all work and back up any and all important data on your system before proceeding. Also note that once a computer has been compromised with malware, it should not be considered clean until a complete reformat has taken place.

Malware Remediation Steps:

Before proceeding, go into your browser’s extensions and remove all suspicious items. Also go into your browser’s settings and remove any default search providers and unusual homepages. If you are unsure how to do this, proceed to Step 1.

Download and run the following tools in this order. Run all tools unless otherwise instructed. All tools should be run in Normal Mode (not Safe Mode) unless you are unable to boot Normal Mode, or the scans fail in Normal Mode. All tools must be run under an Administrator account. Do not remove any tool-generated logs in the event a helper needs you to post them to further assist you.

1) Run rkill.com. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to finish. Do not reboot when done.

  • Kills running malicious processes

  • Removes policies in the registry that prevent normal OS operation

  • Repairs file extension hijacks

2) Download an updated copy Malwarebytes 3.0. Turn on the “Scan for Rootkits” option. Then, run a “Scan

  • Successfully removes the vast majority of infections
  • Has an industry-leading built-in rootkit/bootkit scanning engine
  • Has built-in repair tools to fix damage done by malware

3) Run Malwarebytes ADWCleaner using the “Scan” option.

  • Removes majority of adware, PuPs, Toolbars, and Browser hijacks
  • Fixes proxy settings changed by malware
  • Removes certain non-default browser settings

NOTE: It is no longer necessary to run JRT. The JRT definitions have been rolled into ADWCleaner by Malwarebytes. JRT no longer provides additional benefit.

Optional, Advanced Step (only run if previous tools fail to solve problem):

4) Run Sophos HitmanPro

  • Here is HitmanPro.

HitmanPro is a phenomenal "second-opinion" malware scanner.

Please note: If malware has prohibited you from browsing the web or downloading files, you can try running the NetAdapter Repair Tool with all options checked which will attempt to restore your internet connection & default browser settings. You may have to download these tools on another computer and move them to a flash drive that you can plug into the infected machine.

Have adware or spyware on your Mac?

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac (formerly Adware Medic). Please make a post if it is unsuccessful.

If you have run all of the above tools successfully, you should be malware-free. If you are still experiencing problems, please make a post in /r/techsupport for further assistance.

Follow-up Steps (highly recommended):

  • Using a computer that has not been infected, change passwords to all your online accounts.
  • Consider enabling two-factor authentication.
  • Install a better anti-virus. See recommendations below.

What is malware?

Malware is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. [Source: Wikipedia.com]

How did I get infected?

It is difficult to track down the source of an infection. Most infections are actually given permission to run unknowingly by the user. It is recommended to keep User Account Control turned on and never give access to something you do not trust or did not open. Many other infections come via exploits in your browser or browser plug-ins on websites you visit. Always be very careful what you install. Make sure you trust the source implicitly. When downloading programs, always use the publisher’s website directly.

How to prevent future infections:

Be very careful what you download and install. Keep programs like Java & Flash up-to-date, but do so using their official websites or Ninite installers. Use Unchecky to prevent accidental installation of adware & spyware during product installations. Make sure Windows is kept up-to-date as well. Many Windows updates patch exploits and vulnerabilities in your operating system. Most infections are active because the user has unknowingly given it Administrative permission to install and run. The first line of defense starts with you.

What do I need to convert VGA to HDMI?

My old tv had a HDMI port. My new TV is limited to HDMI but I'd still like to use it as a monitor. The only cable I can find only seem to go HDMI to VGA but not vice versa.

After hard-reboot, windows takes forever to start up, keeps freezing every few seconds, and all text is missing.

Hi, I left my computer running for about a week since I needed to convert several videos, and I finally restarted it the other night, due to performance problems while trying to play Left4Dead 2. While playing L4D, the PC started stuttering really badly, and eventually, explorer totally froze, and my desktop turned all white for a second. Finally, the game froze, and so did every other running app on the PC, but I was still able to move my mouse. I had to perform a hard-shutdown. This morning, I turned it on, and it froze for a while on the Windows 10 screen with the spinning loading circle. It took about 30-40 minutes, but the login screen showed up. It took about 10 more minutes to login, but now the operating system it practically unusable. Everything's executing very slowly, it freezes (including mouse movement) every few seconds, and worst of all, all of the text is gone. Desktop icons, window titles, right click menus, even task manager isn't showing any text, just blank interface windows. I don't know what to do, as trying to reset the PC using built-in diagnostic tools fails, and I kind of need to use it again by Monday, as I have class assignments I need to work on. Any advice for this very specific issue?

I want to exit Deep Freeze/Maintenance Mode

I am borrowing a Dell Latitude E5440 laptop (Windows 7) from my university's library. Every time I go to use it, I get a pop up box labeled "Deep Freeze" that says "This computer is in Maintenance Mode. (The keyboard and mouse are disabled.)"

As you would expect, I can't do anything with the computer since I can't click or type.

Is there any way for me to have it exit Maintenance Mode? I'd call the library, but they are closed now. I have a paper to write so I came here for suggestions. Thanks!

When things get busy in a video game (only ubisoft games possibly?) I lose signal in my monitors and I hear the disconnect sound and am forced to restart computer.

Specs: I5 4690, GTX 780, 16 GB RAM, Samsung SSD and 3 TB HDD, 805 watt EVGA PSU, ASRock Z97 Mobo

So when things like explosions happen or when I enter a populated area in games like Far Cry 5 and Rainbow Six Siege my computer crashes forcing me to restart. SOEMTIMES the case fans and CPU and GPU fans go 100%, sometimes the computer keeps on idling.

I dont feel like its my GPU or CPU because the temperatures are fine. I tried removing a stick of ram at a time and it still happens. I took my HDD out and installed a game on my SSD and reinstalled windows and it still happens. I get a string of error codes on my mobo when I restart it and from what I can gather it points towards hard drive issues. I know my SSD isnt overheating because I have all my case sides off and air moving in there, I havent tried booting from another drive because I dont want to format my HDD because its got so much shit on it.

So end of the day I feel like its my motherboard because it has the control of my fans and the inputs. I havent tried plugging the GPU into the mobo because at idle the computer is fine. Windows and GPU drivers are up to date. I tried running on just one monitor, two, and three monitors at a time.

If anyone has even heard of this type of crash before I'd appreciate any insight because black screen and 100% case fans seems pretty unique. Thanks.

I think I missed a 66 towards the end but here is the mobo error code thing: 4f 62 9d 99 a2

Taskbar icons duplicating

My taskbar icons have been duplicating/changing to the icons to whatever is to the right of whatever is there when mousing between them, this applies for both pinned and unpinned icons. It seems to fix itself for awhile when I restart but ends up duplicating itself again in about a day.

USB Hard Drive slow to mount, slow to read

Hello

I have a 1tb USB 3.0 Samsung Drive that’s less than a year old - recently its started acting odd -

When I plug it into Windows it’s takes at least 5/6 minutes to mount - I see the drive after a minute or so; just the icon no drive size or name, the green progress bar slowly creeps along and once the bars full I get the name/label etc and I can access the drive

I’m trying to copy 5gb of files to the desktop and i’m getting speeds of 100-200kb max - it kicks up he odd ‘file unavailable’ error which I usually skip but I don’t want to skip all because some of the files may be ones I need

I’ve ran chkdsk /r and checkdisk p/ - it only came up with 8kb in bad sectors

I’ve tried plugging it into a Mac to try First Aid but it doesn’t show in Disk Utility

I’ve tried a different cable to no avail

If anyone has any suggestions I would be eternally grsteful

Logitech MX master 2 won't fast spin

Hello everyone,

My wife and I both have a logitech mx master 2, and I also have the mouse at work.

But while working on her PC, I noticed that her mouse doesn't fast spin. The fast spin tirggers, and starts, but immediately stops again. Which makes the whole feature useless...

I went through all the options, enabled, disabled it, played around with the detection timings, this all works, but it never keeps spinning... it goes on, and almost immediately off again.

Has anyone have this happen to them, and is it fixable, or do I have to send the mouse back?

I have had the fast speed mode get stuck on the other two mouses, where the mouse doesn't "rattle" spin anymore, but a few hard taps on the wheel normally unstucks the pin that causes this.

But hers just never keeps spinning at all...

Someone has hijacked my t.v. and sound bar in appartment

Someone in my condo has hijacked my t.v. and sound somehow last night at 2am, they woke me and my SO out if a dead sleep by playing porn on speakers(which was off) and when we tried to turn the volume down and turn on Bluetooth they kept fighting with us somehow by cranking it up higher and turning it back on . We just pulled the plug in frustration. In the morning when we were watching the news it has happened again where porn was broadcasted in our living room via speakers and luckily I was able to deny the request on my tv this time but not sure how to stop it from happening in the future.

We have a 7 series Samsung tv paired with a HW-K430 speaker bar.

Attempting to connect a second Dell screen to an Acer desktop--what cord do I need?

Hi all.

I recently purchased a two Dell E2416HM G0RH1 24" monitors and an Acer Aspire desktop 7th gen i3-7100 TC-780ACKi3. I'm attempting to get the second monitor connected to have excel on one side and word or images on the other.

The Dell monitor has two inputs--a 15 pin connector, which came with a cord and connects to the computer just fine, and a second input, which appears to be a DVI cable. The computer only has one 15 pin connection, though. Should I be looking for this DVI to USB cord? It seems like there are lots of splitters, adapters, and different hardware for this. What should I be looking for? Thanks.

Weird network issue.

Hello, so I've been having issues with connecting to the internet. My issue has been that it's been like a 50/50 chance that when I turn my computer on that I won't be able to immediately connect to the internet. Going to my network & internet settings and disabling the connection then re-enabling wouldn't fix it. My fix has been restarting my modem everytime I start my computer. (ethernet not wifi).

I built a new rig last month and just hotswapped my ssd's/hdd's from my last rig. So I figured that re-installing W10 would fix the issue, so I did so 2 nights ago. But the same issue was still there.

But I found a quicker way of fixing it... when I start my computer... I just unplug/replug in the ethernet cable to my computer and the internet works. I have no idea why, but it works 100% of the time. Does anyone know why?

I mostly use it for web browsing (with 20-60 tabs open) in chrome, plus word processing. it frequently take a long time to open programs and frequently stops responding for 10 seconds or so. I often check the resources, its uncommon to use more than 70% of physical memory and processor is barely working most of the time.

Distribution group assignments

I work for a small IT company where we provide IT services to small businesses. That being said, we are having communication issues within our company.

The way it works right now is if one of our clients need help, they submit a support request email to "service@.com" and all 5 of us tech's get the email. The "service@.com" is a distribution group.

Is there any way to assign tickets within outlook to certain people and have it replicate across everyones outlook? Maybe all of us techs have a different color and we could assign the email a color to know its being taken care of by a certain person? Not sure

How do you guys do it? Any input at all on this would be gratefully appreciated.

Where’s Waldo? Find him in Google Maps

Do I need to get a wifi extender or new router?

I have a netgear cg3000dv2. My internet connection is good in the living room 50 mbps download on a 300 mbps plan. However the signal seems to weaken once we go to the bedrooms. It drops to .5 mbps. We live in an apartment so it's not huge. It's around 950 sq ft. Roomate says wifi extenders don't work and we need a new router but I honestly have never had an issue with the router and believe the range is just off.

What should I get or change to fix the wifi signal range?

TV calibration app for android devices?

Yesterday i bought an older Samsung LCD TV (http://www.samsung.com/de/consumer/tv-av/tv/hd/LE32B450C4WXZG/) as i'm not the biggest fan of LED TVs and i wanted it to be 720p, nothing higher for specific reasons (i won't describe as it's not relevant).

The problem is: I just don't get the color, contrast, brightness settings right. Is there an App for Android that helps me calibrate the right settings? The only app i found required a connection between the device and the TV which is not possible with the old TV.

RAM Failure

Hello,

My desktop was having issues with BSODs occurring at random times with a variety of error messages, applications (particularly high-res games) crashing, and random Chrome tabs crashing/not opening. I ran Window's memory diagnostic a few times, twice came up with an error (https://imgur.com/a/QSpUa) and once came up with "no problems." I am willing and able to buy new RAM chips and install them, but before I spend another $200 I wanted to double check the following:

-Is it certain that it's the RAM? Is there another hardware component that could cause this?

-Is there any reason I don't get a RAM error every time I run the diagnostic?

Any and all advice appreciated, thanks.

PC says i dont have a genuine windows key when i do

So about 2 weeks ago i moved my ssd into my brothers computer while he was away. After a few days i see an "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom right corner, i think to myself "ehh, thats just because i moved the ssd. It will be fine once i move back to my PC." Well fast forward to today the watermark is still there and i cant activate windows.
I bought a genuine copy of windows 7 about 5 years ago, and 2 years ago i upgraded to windows 10. I dont have the windows key because i threw the box away after i installed windows 7 (i know im a moron) so i cant just activate it again. Is there anything i can do?

EDIT: I went to the microsoft store to buy a new copy and there was an option to check my current os and it found it was genuine

SVChost.exe causing crazy high CPU usage, causing laptop to run hot. Please help!

Running Windows 10 on Dell XPS 15 9560, i7 Processor.

Recently my laptop starting running hot and after having a look in the task manager i noticed there was a process taking up between 60-80 percent of my CPU usage.

After looking closer i noticed it was a SVChost.exe service. I understand the usual process is to right click on the SVChost.exe in the details tab, and follow "go to service(s)" and find out which exact service it is from there, and change the start setting to manual or disable it altogether.

But when I right click to get to services, nothing is selected when come to the Services tab. Therefore Im unable to narrow down which service is causing the high CPU usage.

Is there anyway i can eliminate these processes from taking up CPU usage? Ive also had multiple blue screen errors with the error code "Critical_Process_Died" as a result of this.

Please let me know if anyone knows a fix for this.

Lately when i turn it on, after the asus logo appears, a BSOD appears, but is not the usual one, the color of the background is white and it's difficult to read whatever is written on it, it lasts more or less 5 seconds and then the laptop restarts and it's all ok. here it is a poor quality photo of it: https://imgur.com/a/138UW

i already tried to reinstall all the GPU drivers and already did a chkdsk, but nothing to do.

I would like to know what could i do to fix it (if it's even possible) and how much i'm fucked. thank you for your help :)

Strange FPS issues after a Driver update - where rolling back did not fix the issue

So I am unsure as to whether this is the correct subreddit to be posting this on, but anyway here goes:

So After updating my graphics drivers to a newer version (driver version 391.24 - aimed at optimising for FFXV) I started to have some really strange issues with FPS. I first noticed this while playing FFXIV. I was getting < 30 FPS in an area where on the previous drivers i would get ~120 FPS. So at the time my reasonable first solution was to roll-back the drivers. Doing that did not help, as the game would run fine for a while, say 30 minutes up to an hour, at the original FPS. After which point the FPS would drop back down to 30, or in longer gaming sessions <10 FPS. I did also attempt to lower the graphically fidelity of the game, but that did not result in any change in the framerate.

I am having a similar occurance in PUBG as well... However, this situation is more interesting. When in the PUBG lobby, (soon after pc restart/booted up) it would run at a smooth 60 FPS, Then within an hour that would drop down below 10 FPS. However, although the lobby is having major FPS issues (again not solved by down-grading the graphics) The game itself when playing a round, runs over 80 FPS (V-synced to 60).

And having mentioned it in the previous paragraph, I have noticed that upon restarting the computer both PUBG lobby and FFXIV would run at their original FPS before this issue. However after a while of the PC being on (whether I was playing the games or not) the games would still show the same issues. I have also noticed some issues when using Google Chrome

Ultimately what is making me very curious about the whole situation, is that some games are completely unaffected. I just spent an hour and a half in Sniper Elite 4, and the game ran at a solid 60 FPS for the entire time that i was playing it. I noticed no issues in the playing of the game, or through any of the menus. The only other program/game that seems to be showing issues atm is the Unreal Engine, which was running between 10 and 20 FPS.

Hardware (The computer is intended for Game-Dev and Streaming/Video Editing along with Gaming):

  • Intel i7 6700k (not oc)
  • Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 (not oc)
  • Seagate Barracuda 2TB (where all the games are stored)
  • 32GB of RAM

What i have tried:

  • Complete clean install of the driver (in this case the more recent 391.35 Drivers) - Done by completely removing all nVidia software from the computer then downloading the driver installer from nVidia's website.
  • Uninstalling nVidia HD Audio Driver and GeForce Experience (as i had seen people mentioning them as issues, and They are easily re-acquired when installing new drivers)
  • Clean installs of the games I was having issues with (FFXIV and PUBG)
  • Checking for windows updates
  • Monitoring CPU/GPU Temps while in and out of game (never getting higher then 60°C on either)
  • Monitoring Clock speeds of CPU/GPU, both of which were hitting their registered Clock/Boost speed.
  • Lowering Graphics settings to their lowest setting - which didnt affect my FPS in anyway in the affected games.
  • Running benchmarks (Unigene Heaven / Furmark) and finding no issues
  • Running the FFXIV specific benchmark and being awarded the highest tier ("Extremely High" iirc - This was ran after closing FFXIV due to the FPS issues)

Any help would be appreicated and if you require more hardware information then please ask.

I think the hard drive in my laptop is failing. I am wondering if I could buy a new hard drive for it and somehow copy the entire contents of the old failing one to the new one. I am not well-versed in tech so forgive me if I'm not wording this correctly.

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5720, Windows 7. Terrible noises coming from hard drive lately. Like I said in the title I'm a novice when it comes to computers so I was having trouble coming up with search terms to find out more about this. Is what I want to do even possible? Would Windows and all my files and programs be copied exactly? If this isn't possible, what do you recommend? I have programs that I wouldn't have any idea how to acquire again, that's the main reason why I don't just buy a new computer. Thank you in advance for any and all help.

I want to get windows to not shut down successfully so I can make it enter repair mode. Is there a way I can get it to do that?

I want to get windows to boot up and have it go to the menu that says "enter repair mode (recommended)" or "start windows normally". I've tried taking out the battery while it was on.

How to remove cooking oil grease from a computer

Oddly specific, but I've been tasked with cleaning a computer that was used in a restaurant for a number of years now. The thing is covered in cooking oil grease. It still works fine, but it's sticky and awful all around. I don't think any of it got inside the tower, but the keyboard, mouse and specially the monitor are coated with it. Anyone can help?

Windows 10 suddenly fails to boot with 0xc000014c BCD related issue

Funny enough just two days ago it happened to me on my personal machine and today a client called me with the same problem. In both my case and his case booting to Windows Creation USB got me into the Advanced Options but System Restore and Startup Repair failed to find the Windows partition in order for them proceed. I was able to see the C partition in its entirety from the command prompt. I tried the various bootrec commands with no luck.

In the case of my machine after doing all of this with no luck and after many many reboot attempts suddenly for no reason it booted back up and has been fine since

For the client doing all the same procedures got me a bit further. Suddenly after many attempts at the procedures above including system restore which failed to find Windows for whatever reason after a few more reboots to the Creation USB suddenly system restore was able to find Windows and subsequent restore point and was able to finished successfully. But upon reboot I still ended up with the same boot failure.

Decided to take the the computer with me seeing as it appeared this wasn't going to easy. Got it back to home to my bench figuring I'd wind up having to do reload but figured I'd spend a bit more time on some other possible fixes. Never got to pursue that because upon first powering it up when I got it home low and behold it booted up normally and is back in Windows like nothing happened.

Oh and both my clients case and my with own computer I ran hard drive SMART and Short tests found and both of them passed.

I am suspecting some sort of Windows Update might be responsible for this but it doesn't explain it spontaneously correcting itself.

Any ideas or recent similar experiences

While playing Diablo 3 my computer froze with a bunch of crazy colors and rebooted. Now I'm getting "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" in Device Manager for the GTX 1070.

I've shut down, cleaned, reinstalled drivers... everything I can think of. Tried a new cable. I have feint red little lines running through my screen. I highly, highly doubt the card was overheating. Any ideas? Did it just fry?

The High Five: gathering around the table and in the stands

Whether celebrating Easter or Passover with friends and family, or cheering on your favorite team, there’s a lot to look forward to this weekend. Here’s a look at some of the top searches from this week, with data from Google News Lab.

Cracking open Easter trends

This weekend, families across the country will gather to celebrate Easter and the beginning of Passover. As this week’s trends show, nothing brings people together like food. Scalloped potatoes and pie top the most-searched recipes for Easter Sunday, and some people are planning for Mass on Saturday: “How long is Easter Vigil Mass?” was one of the top trending Easter-related queries. People are also getting crafty at home in preparation for egg hunts, asking: “how to boil eggs for Easter?”

As for Passover preparations, charoset and brisket were the most popular “Passover Seder recipes,” while search interest in “passover greetings in English” went up 450 percent. Chag sameach!

Taking it to the hole

The NCAA Final Four games are upon us, and Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Michigan and Indiana are the top states searching for “March Madness.” Meanwhile in Illinois, Loyola-Chicago isn’t the only breakout star of the tournament—search interest in their holy good luck charm Sister Jean rose over 1,000 percent this week. People are even wondering “what did Sister Jean give up for Lent?”

Call it a comeback

Search interest in Roseanne Barr spiked over 300 percent on Tuesday, as the 2018 reboot of the popular television series premiered on ABC. Top questions about the show included “who is Jerry on Roseanne?” and “how many people watched Roseanne?” (somewhere in the ballpark of 18 million viewers).

Snap, crackle, pop

“Why are my knuckles cracking?” was a trending question this week. And it was answered by researchers in the U.S. and France who found out it’s caused by tiny bubbles collapsing in the fluid of the joint as the pressure changes. It looks like the three M’s—Minnesota, Michigan and Maryland—are among the top regions searching for “knuckles cracking.” Attempt at your own risk.

Swing batter, batter, swing

Just in time for Major League Baseball’s Opening Day, search interest in “top MLB  prospects for 2018” spiked over 400 percent this week. Top trending teams included the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees, and Scott Kingery, Salvador Pérez and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rounded the bases as some of the top trending players.

[Windows] Windows 10 Fresh Install Questions

I recently purchased this Dell laptop and received it this week. I would like to do a fresh Windows installation on the SSD but I have some questions concerning this action.

Is the Rest Windows option that is offered with Windows 10 an actual fresh install? Will the bloatware be removed or will it just return it to factory settings? If this is not truly a fresh install, what method would one use to achieve this in a Windows 10 based desktop/laptop?

Are some of the applications that appear on this just default Windows applications now? Like I am assuming I will still have the Office suite on here but what about the Dell programs, McAfee, pre installed games (ex. Bubble Witch 3 Saga), etc. I am trying to get rid of all this so I can use the laptop the way I want to. Will reset actually do this or do I need to look at another option?

TIA

Phone makes a creaking sound

Hey all

I hope someone can help. I had a Huawei Mate 10 Pro which started making a creaking door sound randomly once in a while. Then it became more and more often. If i had it close to my pc it would have that sound come out of the pc speaker or headset. Not attached to phone at all. I got kinda scared since i was afraid it was some extra radiation. I decided to switch phone to a Samsung S9. It literally just made the same sound now... i had it for 5 days only.

Does anyone know what this issue can be? I have no clue and I am kinda paranoid its something creepy.

Can you help me lock down my network a little bit better?

I have a somewhat complicated network topology at home. Here's my equipment:

  • A Comcast "modem" UBEE 3513
  • Asus RT-N66U (used for firewall, routing, and port forwarding)
  • Core-i7 Windows 10 Home PC (media server)
  • A Roku 4 Ultra (used to stream programming to television from the Plex PC)
  • An Amazon Alexa
  • Synology DS1815+ Diskstation (PDF link)
  • Television (Sony recent model)
  • Playstation 4
  • Nintendo Switch
  • Old Mac Pro workstation (used as a file server for downloading stuff)
  • 2 Ubiquiti UniFi access points
  • Nest thermostat (first gen)
  • Marantz SR6010 receiver
  • Laser printer
  • Computers
    • iMac
    • Macbook Pro
    • Other Macbook Pro
    • Macbook
    • PC laptop
    • Core i9 PC workstation
    • Various iPads, iPhones, and wireless devices
  • I also have a 10gb fiber run to my separate garage where I have some equipment and one of the wireless access points.

Current config:

My internet connection goes directly from the UBEE modem to the Asus. The Asus handles all connections and routes accordingly. I have ports forwarded for my media server's apps so that I can share them out to the general internet. (I watch Plex and listen to my music using Subsonic almost every day).

I often access several of my computers using Splashtop. I'm not that happy with it, and screen sharing actually works better when I'm going from Mac to Mac. But it works OK in a pinch. I never SSH or use command line in any way. I'm not familiar with the terminal for accessing remote machines (or in any way, really).

I occasionally log into my Synology for file access remotely. I also use the iPhone app to log in and check my security cameras very often (several times a day).

My Windows 10 Home server has NO firewall activated. I did that to make sure it could be accessed easily from the internet. (I'm sure this is making some folks cringe). I have never had an issue with that machine. It is never used for web surfing, it ONLY runs the server software.

Currently, the Asus' firewall is set to "On". I don't have any custom settings (nor would I know how to properly configure them). The "Enable DoS protection" and "Respond ICMP Echo (ping) request from LAN" are both set to "no". I realize this is probably unsafe (that's why I'm posting here). I don't really know what those mean. I want to button it down properly and make sure my systems are as safe as they can be realistically.

I have an A NAME record pointing from my hosting provider to my home using "home.mydomain.com" so that I can log in easily without having to remember my IP. I have to reset the A NAME record to my new IP every few years.

I have a Comcast business account at home (no data caps).

I do not know really what a tunnel is. I do not really understand VPNs (although we use a Cisco VPN at work). I have heard that those two things would help secure my network. Not really sure how.

How can I make this more secure using my limited knowledge and HUGE fear of the command line?

I sold a laptop on ebay and now the guy is coming back to me saying it's faulty

I sold my erazor x7853 on ebay because i barely used it in the 6 months i owned it. The laptop was in perfect condition, no issues whatsoever. The guy received it on 28/03/2018 and said it was perfect, it's running perfectly and no issues which leads me to believe that his son who he bought the laptop for has somehow broken it.

today 30/03/2018 he has messaged me this: https://imgur.com/Biqatom

he says i wiped the laptop to try and clear a hard drive error.. which is stupid because i obviously used the windows 10 restart so all of my information was removed.. i've already paid my £200 fees and paid £40 to ship this to him.. what shall i do? shall i accept it has magically broken in the last 2 days and he should return it, or should i argue the fact the laptop was fine when i sent it and when he received it.

Primary & Secondary Monitor Switching Upon System Wake (From Sleep)

Hey everyone! I used to have dual 1080p60 monitors, and after upgrading one of my monitors to 1440p144, I started running into a weird issue. Quick background:

Dell S2716DG 1440p144 monitor (on left) is set to "Main Display". Connected via certified DP.

BenQ RL2755HM 1080p60 monitor (on right) is secondary screen. Connected via certified HDMI.

I play games on the 1440p screen, and I run discord/obs/etc on my 1080p screen. I unlock the task bar and put the taskbar from my primary monitor over to the secondary (so that I can see if my mic is working correctly in discord, check if OBS is recording, etc). Now ever since getting my new monitor, whenever I wake my PC from sleep, the screen will flicker a bit at the lock screen, then I sign in, and my main taskbar is back to my main screen, forcing me to unlock and move over again each and every time.

Anyone know how I can fix this from happening every time? Thank you in advance!

Laptop CPU extremely hot, no idea why

I have an Asus laptop with an I7-3632qm cpu that is overheating. It gets to almost 100c and when it does this the computer runs really slow and glitchy. The laptop itself would be way too hard to take apart, is there anything I can do besides blow some compressed air inside while it's off?

The only thing I can think of is 2 months ago I replaced the dead hard drive with a WD Scorpio 500gb, and the part of the laptop by the hard drive gets meltingly hot. Could this have anything to do with it?

Windows 10 Install Can't Detect SSD

I am currently trying to do a fresh install of Windows 10 to my nvme SSD on a new PC, but the Windows 10 installer can not find the m.2 SSD. I tried finding it in diskpart but the only drive listed is my bootable UEFI USB install media. My bios/UEFI correctly displays my SSD in the m.2 slot, and this is the only drive connected to the motherboard, besides my boot media.

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2400g

Mobo: ASRock X370 Pro4

SSD: Samsung 960 Evo m.2 nvme 500gb

Note that the motherboard does have an ultra m.2 slot for nvme SSD's, and this model is specifically listed as supported for plug n play. It also says it supports nvme as bootable drives, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, as I've tried booting with CSM set to UEFI only, disabled, and many other options I've found in various video tutorials and support threads, so any more suggestions would be much appreciated.

Tip off: how we’re using predictive analytics during the Final Four

When we teamed up with the NCAA last December, we were thrilled to help them use cloud technology to analyze more than 80 years’ worth of statistical game and competition data. But we also wanted to challenge ourselves to do something a little different in the process—and hopefully delight basketball fans while we were at it.

That’s how we came to embark on a months-long experiment to apply our own technologies to the NCAA’s treasure trove of data. We assembled a team of technicians, data scientists, and basketball enthusiasts (we call them The Wolfpack) who built a data processing workflow using Google Cloud Platform technologies like BigQuery and Cloud Datalab. (For the nitty gritty technical details, read this post on our Big Data blog.)

By analyzing NCAA data through our workflow, we were able to uncover all sorts of interesting facts—everything from who blocks more shots per minute (for the record: juniors) to whether teams with a certain type of animal mascot cause more March Madness upsets (hint: meow). But we wondered if there was more we could do. Could we use data analytics and machine learning to anticipate what might happen during a live game—for example, the number of three-pointers a team might attempt in the second half?

This weekend, we’ll attempt to do exactly that during the Final Four in San Antonio—and we’ll be sharing our predictions in real-time TV ads you can see during halftime. Here’s how it’ll work.

During the Final Four, our Google Cloud team (yes, The Wolfpack included) will be on site in San Antonio, closely following the games. We’ll use our workflow to analyze our observations from the first half of each game against NCAA historical data to hone in on a prediction for the second half that we think is highly probable.

As halftime starts, the real work begins. We’ll have only minutes to turn our prediction into a TV spot. Our creative team will take the prediction generated by our team of data scientists and data analysts and create the ad right there in the Alamodome, using a real-time rendering system built by Cloneless and Eleven Inc. (Fun fact: Cloneless’ rendering system is also built on Google Cloud Platform.)

Before the end of halftime, we’ll hand off our newly-created TV ad to CBS and Turner for airing on TBS right before the beginning of the second half. This is likely the first time a company has used its own real-time predictive analytics to create ads during a live televised sporting event—wish us luck!

One of the exciting things about running an experiment like this in real time is we don’t know for sure what will happen. In this way, it’ll be a little like what it takes to play a game of basketball—thinking on your feet, reacting quickly to new data, and working together as a team. Which, if you think about it, is also true for businesses.

Although this story is about March Madness, we hope it’ll be inspiring well beyond the basketball court. There’s so much to learn from applying cloud technology to data—and that’s true whether you’re an enterprise organization, a nonprofit, or even a sports team.

To learn more, you can check out our site or read our post on the Big Data blog. And if you’re curious to see what happens, tune in to the Final Four on Saturday and Monday to see our predictions as they air. We’ll report back once the tournament is over and let you know what happened—and what we learned. Game on!

SATA cable and Windows installation simultaneously broken, then magically fixed by Ubuntu?

I'm fixing a computer for a friend. She said it just stopped working one day.
At first the hard drive didn't show up at all in the BIOS screen, so I reset the BIOS and checked the RAM ports. The RAM is recognized. Also, the motherboard gives the warning beeps when the RAM is missing so it must not be totally dead.

I switched out the SATA cable on the hard drive and it did show up all of a sudden. However, it wouldn't boot Windows, even after Windows tried to repair the installation several times. I put the original SATA cable back in because I needed to use the other one, and the hard drive showed up in BIOS this time, with the original cable. So I'm not sure the SATA cable is problematic after all, or if it's the HDD or the Windows install. I tried running a memory diagnostic and everything checked out but Windows still wouldn't load.

I decided to install Ubuntu via a flash drive and see if that would work. Ubuntu wouldn't recognize the HDD even though the BIOS screen did. I switched SATA ports and the SATA cable, and all of a sudden Ubuntu recognizes the HDD. Ubuntu has installed correctly now.

But get this ... now Windows works if I choose it as the OS on startup ... what?

So, it seems like there was a problem with the Windows install, but it also seems like there might be a problem with the SATA cable or the HDD ... I'm not sure where the root cause is, or if there are multiple issues here. I had tried the HDD in another computer but it didn't show up; I was using the original SATA cable, which might have been the problem.

But now everything is working after I installed Ubuntu, so yay? Should I be worried about the HDD or the power supply? Sorry for the long confusing post.

OS: Windows 7 (and now Ubuntu also)
RAM: 4GB RAM (dual ports)
Processor: Core i3 processor @ 2.93 GHZ with 4 CPU's
HDD: ST325031
Graphics Card: GeForce 8400 GS

I'm looking for a way to share files between my desktop and laptop.

Here's the situation: I use my laptop at the office and around town. My desktop stays home. My laptop and desktop are almost never together (what a tragedy). I'd like to be able to link the computers together so I can work on files regardless of where I am.

As it stands I have a few options:

  1. USB
  2. Google Drive or DropBox
  3. Server
  4. VPN

USB is a good option. It's cheap, offline, and quick. However, I might lose it and I'll have to remember to "update" the files regularly. In the event I do lose it or forget the USB I'll be left without the files to work on until I get another usb.

Google Drive, DropBox, or other online services make it easier to share those files without any extra parts, are free/cheap, and can sync files online. My only quarrel would be how trustworthy these companies could be. I don't have any top secret info, but I'd like to be able to share my files without worrying about what they could do with the data I upload. What if my files were hacked and someone was able to find personal data?

Server. Honestly, I have no info other than that they can cost too much work and money.

VPN is something that just came to me while writing this. I could have a storage device that is always on and connected to the wifi at home. I could use VPN to share those files from my laptop over the internet (securely?) to the storage device and then access it on my desktop over the wifi. Although, I don't know how safe, efficient, or cost-effective it would be.

Semi boot

So earlier today i was undervolting my i3 7100, with a ASUS B250-plus board. I managed to push it down to 0.95 volts with intel XTU and stress tested it and it passed just fine, after that i tried 0.90 where upon it bluescreened. At reboot i entered bios and again increased the voltage to 0.95 and preceeded to save and exit.

When the system again booted it frooze at the ”Click F2 or delete to enter UEFI” screen. I couldn’t enter BIOS or enter windows. I reset the system but that time it wouldn’t even show a picture.

Please help!

My uni was throwing away some electronics and naturaly I tried to salvage some. I found this video cards? from the 90s which aparently are retailing from 200 to 400$ on ebay, I am wondering what they are for and how can I test if they still work (to sell them of course) and why such a high price for such an old piece of hardware?

Looking for advice from someone who does IT work in a school

My children came home from school yesterday and said that the kids were accessing Sonic.exe (horror game) and other flash-based horror games.

What I want to know is what policy you would usually have in place in a school to stop kids accessing this stuff? Their IT manager said that they just need to flag it to him and he'll block it...

However, I work in IT. We have one client which is a home for severely abused children. They have a young persons PC and it is so locked down. We use a Watchguard and have white approved websites ONLY. The school, however, said that gaming websites need to be approved so they can access learning websites? Surely a whitelist would be the best option here?

If someone could let me know what policies you have in place at your school. Or if I've posted in the wrong place, I'm sorry.

Disk usage 100% all the time, DQL peaks at >400

I'm having serious issues with my Asus X540-LA lately. The OS is Win10 Home x64 1703. The disk usage seems to be 100% all the time. Usually it's the process I'm using in the foreground which takes up 40-80% of the disk usage even when it's not a demanding program. The list includes Chrome, iTunes, System, Task Manager and even Process Hacker 2 when I have all the other programs terminated. Process Hacker 2 shows high disk usage when trying to access other .exe files (Probably for monitoring?).

Here's a list of what I've tried:

  1. A full malware scan of the PC, not infected. There's not a single anomalous behaviour other than the high DQL which renders my PC unusable (sluggish).
  2. Disabled all background push notifications
  3. Disabled the feature to allow Chrome to work in the background even after closing the program
  4. Disabled the Windows Update service on a startup level
  5. Disabled Superfetch at times, but Superfetch barely causes the problem for me and stopping it didn't do anything
  6. Disabled nearly all the programs from launching upon startup
  7. Disabled all the modern fancy animations, transparency, nothing helped

Here's a screenshot of the DQL on resmon

I've been using the PC for over a year (15 months) now but the problem's been happening since last month.

How to decrypt files encrypted by a user that does not exist anymore. [Windows 7]

A few years ago I wanted to keep my sister from accessing my files so I went to properties>general>advanced>encrypt contents to secure data

I thought this would let me add a password to my data but apparently not. The filenames turned green, but that was basically the extent of the visible effects. Turns out my sister wasn't interested in my files anyway. However, recently the computer crashed during a thunderstorm or something, and they called a technician to repair it. I don't live here anymore, so I don't know precisely what happened to the computer. My computer used to have two accounts. One was the admin account and one extra that I created for my sister. After the technician came, all my software was uninstalled. Basically the computer was formatted but all the data was still there. That means that in the D drive I have a folder with all my stuff, but it's green, because it was encrypted by the old admin account. Now I can't access any of it. I have many movies and pictures that I would not like to part with. Can they be salvaged? Happy to provide additional details. Thanks.

Cannot stop Windows from downloading in the background, is there anyway to stop this?

CONTEXT: Recent Windows Update made it so that users couldn't disable updates in the background and rather let users set a data-limit for these updates. It still uses a lot of my Network usage and was wondering is there any programs or methods to bypass this problem. I get slower download speeds/horrible ping in online games because of it and it never stops! Thank you if you can help me!

Need help with my LAMP stack/wordpress for tomorrow (technical interview)!!

Greetings!

So I have my techincal interview tomorrow and seem to be running into a bit of an issue. The manager asked me to create a LAMP stack and host wordpress (which I did). I configured it and made it look pretty, but the issue is if I jump off my network - let's say I connect to my hotspot - my wordpress won't run.

It runs fine when it's on my home network, 192.168.0.104, but when I connect it let say to another network, like 172.20.10.9, the website won't load anymore.

I'm concerned if I bring my laptop there tomorrow and connect it, I won't be able to present my wordpress site. What do I need to search for to trouble shoot this issue? How would I make it so the site would be functional to everyone on the network on ANY network, whether I connect it to home network, or to the workplace network? I don't need it so people outside of the network can visit it, just the inside.

Sony Vaio laptop turns on/off by itself?

Just for reference, I own a (rather old) Sony Vaio which has Windows 7. For nearly a week now, every night at around 3 or 4am my laptop will turn on by itself while it's still closed and then shut off after a few minutes. Since the sound of the fan is pretty loud it always wakes me up as my laptop sits right next to my bed. Any idea as to what could be causing this besides the possibility that my house is haunted? lol

Can't play PC games with controller because my controller just controls my mouse + computer lol

I've had this issue for years and I've never been able to fix it, for some reason my xbox one controller just bugs out sometimes when I'm playing games (including none steam games with steam closed). The right stick will control the mouse, the left stick will open random programs and whenever I hit pause the game tabs out and stuff starts closing on my pc. Makes playing games impossible as you'd expect. I've turned xbox configuration off on steam but it happens even when steam isn't open. I've downloaded new drivers I've reinstalled drivers I've used a different controller nothing stops it.

Also live chat doesn't work for me it just loads forever and never actually connects to a chat idk what's up with that.

Student Ethernet Connection Problems, Easter Weekend in peril!

So basically I’m in some Student Accommodation in Germany and they provided me with a wired Ethernet connection via IPv4. Ive followed their directions which are to input:

IP Subnet Gateway DNS1 DNS2

The plan is that I then log onto their website and input my user details. However, putting these values in allows me to connect to “Network 4” with no internet access. It displays the yellow ! on the toolbar. However in the Networking centre it does show me sending and receiving bytes and in the “Network” tab of the Explorer I can see 15 other individual computers, so clearly I’m connected to something.

IpConfig /all

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

Connection-Specific DNS suffix: Description: Killer e2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) Physical address: (assumed correct) DHCP enabled: No Auto configuration Enabled: Yes IPv4 Address: 172.31.150.58 (Preferred) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 172.31.150.254 DNS Servers: 139.18.25.3 139.18.1.2 NetBIOS over Tcpip: Enabled

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I’m typing from an iPhone on 4G with no WiFi or internet of any kind available on my laptop. Thanks!

Edit: Hit a mistype on the IP.

Turning on data roaming on mobile hotspot device requires disconnecting from network. But how do I apply a setting if I'm disconnected? Screenshot attached.

Using a T-Mobile Alcatel Linkzone. I'm trying to turn on Data Roaming. When I check the option box it tells me to disconnect from the network to change wan settings. Obviously, AFAIK, if I disconnect from the network I wont be able to access the settings of the hotspot.

I've hard reset the device and I disconnected and reconnected from the network. It prompted me to update the software which I have done.

I've seen it work before on the Samsung LTE hotpsot a while back. SM-V100T

Even if it makes no sense, can I have confirmation of that to just prove I'm not crazy.

https://i.imgur.com/M6e8w2z.jpg

Edit: further information I previously contacted T-Mobile tech support. TS did not resolve it and transfered me to Alcatel who disconnected me... of course. Internal documents say

Under the 'WAN Connection Mode Settings' heading, check or uncheck. Check here, to connect to the internet in roaming status to turn data roaming on/off.
Click Apply.

Calling back now. pffft

Best way to do a days or weeks-long analysis of my unrelenting packet loss?

My wonderful ISP repeatedly tells me that my nightly (from about 10PM - 2AM) packet loss is not their fault. I have upgraded my wireless router and had them replace their cable modem but the issue persists (for every wireless device in my house). I only monitor it by sitting at my computer watching the results of a constant ping to google.com.

Do any of you know an easy way I can monitor the packet loss over the course of days or a week and see the results? Any freeware or service in Windows 10? Thank you!

Wired Network Running Slow Should Be Gigabit

hey .. i have a home network set up mostly so I can feed videos to my TV.. but also to share files.

I have android boxes at the tvs and a win7 and win10 computer...

the win10 computer has onboard gigabit.. the win7 has a card with gigabit.. the boxes might run at 100mbit..

they all go to one place where i have a 1gigabit switch.. that switch then runs to the room with the win10 computer where I have another gigabit switch which hooks to the internet and the computer and a small nas..

only the win10 computer is running at gigabit speeds to the nas.. the win7 in the other room is not getting gigabit speeds but I think it might get 12MBYTE ps so i am not sure its running at 100mbit speed..

would there be a problem because I am using 2 switches?

where all the rooms connect at the first switch I am only seeing the win10 room showing 100MByte connection.. its a netgear 8port .. i have tried to change ports and its always the same room getting a better connection .. not the port having a problem..

is there a way I can see network errors on the win7 computer to see if i am dropping an amazing amount of packets? i never get into the 15MB + speed in that room on read or write..

I did all the wiring so maybe a cable or a wall jack isn't perfectly crimped idk

any ideas would be helpful..

Monitor power draw?

So I have an interesting conundrum. I have a pretty nice system, and I recently bought a new monitor. I usually run a tri-screen display and I have no issues. I just upgraded my 2nd monitor from a 1080p 60Hz model, to a 1080p 144Hz model that runs on display port instead of DVI. So now I have two 144Hz primary monitors and a big screen TV all plugged into my computer.

But here lies the issue. The new monitor, doesn't have a power brick, as I'm accustomed to. Instead it plugs directly from the back of the monitor to the power strip. Ever since I've been using this new monitor, my computer will not turn on from a complete shut down, unless I unplug the monitor, and then after I get the computer to post, I can plug the monitor back in. I'm wondering if this is some sort of power draw problem. Especially since my motherboard gives me a "power surge " notification if I don't unplug the monitor first.

I've never had any issues before, and it's not tripping the breaker, and shouldn't seeing as though the wall should support something ridiculous like 1,800W. Also both of my power strips are of very high quality. However I do not own a UPS.

PC specs: ASUS Z-170 pro gaming motherboard

CPU - i5 6600K kaby lake processor - OC 4.5GHz - 1.29V

RAM - 2x 8GB DDR4 OC @ 3200 MHz

GPU - ASUS ROG STRIX 1070 OC 2054 MHz - Memory clock @ 8014

700w power supply silver

2 Hard drives (1 TB WD Blue each 7,200 rpm)

WD Blue 500GB Internal SSD

5 case fans (120 MM)

Corsair H110 AIO (I think, might be the bigger model)

Pirmary Monitor acer KG240 @ 144Hz w/ Displayport

Secondary Monitor Acer GN246HL @ 144Hz w DVI

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Computer Speakers

Razer Taipan mouse

Razer Blackwidow Chroma Keyboard

But yeah like I said, my computer works fine (and still works fine with the old monitor if I swap it back) no graphical issues, no slow downs. Just wont turn on if the new monitor is plugged in at startup.

Note: I haven't tried unplugging other peripherals to see if this works as well.

I'm really stumped as far as this is concerned. Seeing as my entire system shouldn't pull more than 500-600W and I've got a 700W power supply.

PS3 Jammed... Suggestions? AMA

So, funny story, don't worry i'll keep it brief. A piece of paper is stuck inside the disc slot of my Fat PS3. Is there a way to remove it in the safest way possible so I don't damage my system?

Details for the nerds here W:

  • The paper is an average sticky note size.
  • The console is constantly flipping through the insert and eject mode every 5 seconds on average. This leads me to believe the "Is a disc being inserted?" part is blocked by the paper. *My PS3 Fat is currently unplugged and the backside switch is in the "0" position.

New ways to read more with audiobooks from Google Play

Two months ago we launched audiobooks from Google Play to help you fit more books into your life. Today we have a few updates to make it even easier to enjoy a great book, whether you like to listen on the go with your phone or at home with the Google Assistant on Google Home.

  • Never lose your place with Smart Resume.Interruptions happen all the time, and sometimes you need to pause your audiobook in the middle of a sentence or word because your mom calls or maps tells you to turn in 200 feet. When the book picks back up, you have no idea what’s going on. Smart Resume for audiobooks will intelligently rewind you to the beginning of the word or sentence when you pick up your audiobook again, so you’ll be able to jump right back into where you left off.
  • Revisit your favorite moments with Bookmarks. Now you can save all of your favorite moments with Bookmarks in the Google Play Books app. While listening on Android or iOS device, just tap the bookmark icon to save this spot and revisit your favorite quote anytime.
  • Fit in more reading time with routines on the Google Assistant.Every morning you may type in your work address to Google Maps to see traffic, check your appointments in Google Calendar, and fire up an audiobook for your drive. You can do this all in one step, hands free with the Google Assistant’s support for Routines. In the Google Home app, add audiobooks to your routine. Once added, just say “Ok Google, tell me about my day” for an easy transition into your morning—and your book.
  • Speed it up—or slow it way down—with greater speed controls.Sometimes you just just can’t wait to figure out whodunnit. Now, you can listen to audiobooks at 3x speed to get through your book even faster, or slow books down to 0.5x in order to really savor the language. The pace is up to you.
  • Share with Family Library in 13 new countries. With Family Library, you can share audiobooks and ebooks with up to five family members for free (depending on the book). Shared books can then be read on Android, iOS and the web. A program crashed and it broke my monitor.

I have a dual monitor setup. The monitor in question is an Asus VG24QE. The program in question was 'Hydrogen'. A drum machine software which I was running for the first time. The program began to visually glitch out. The monitor went completely white. I restarted the computer and the issue persisted, just on that monitor. Now whenever I turn on the monitor, whether it is connected the the PC or not, I am greeted by a weird purple visual which fades in and out, before the screen whites out again. Here is a picture of the purple visual. The visual itself is not glitchy. It looks like a deliberate design. I don't know if it's part of the monitor software. https://imgur.com/a/kVohX I don't know how a program crashing could effectively write off my monitor. Can anyone help, or just offer an explanation. My other monitor is working perfectly still. Thanks.

Disable HP DV6 Laptop Dedicated Graphics Card

Laptop: HP DV6 6b13es

Specs:

-CPU Core i7-2720QM

-GPU: Intel HD 3000 (integrated) - Radeon Hd 6770m (Dedicated)

-8 GB DDR3-SDRAM

Hi guys,

My laptop has a faulty graphics card, it is fried probably because overheating and the problem is that everytime that I install or enable the dedicated graphics card Hd 6770m the pc goes into a black screen and freezes. So my temporal solution has been disabling and uninstalling the drivers for the graphics card and stopping windows 10 from re-enabling the GPU and work with the integrated intel's graphics card.

My question is: Is there any way to disable the dedicated graphics card from the bios to prevent any way of reenabling from windows? I'm not able to use windows 10 updates because of this, if I active windows updates, windows reenables the graphics card and the pc inmediately freezes.

No video output from laptop to tv

The screen on my xps 15 l521x is broken so I have been using an hdmi cable to generate a display o my television. Its worked every single day since I started 2 years ago. Today, I installed Windows 10 and I'm getting no display. I could hear Cortana speaking through my computer but there was no audio or video chiming through the television. I switched hdmi cables and it worked. I finished setting up Windows 10. It updated and restarted and now I'm back to no display. I tried swapping cables again bit it didn't work. I used a cable from a different television and it didn't work. Could Windows 10 have funked my video settings? I don't understand what's wrong.

Ive also hard reset it a few times and that hasnt worked either.

As of around 15 hours ago, the laptop I use for school (ThinkPad Yoga 11E w/touchscreen) has not turned on despite overnight charged, and is only responding with 3 on and off blinks of the LED when a charger is plugged into it.

I am not sure how to proceed. I know there are methods but I'm not sure which ones to use at the moment.

To be clear, no booting has happened since it last ran out of battery in my bag, I presume.

Outlook.com External Email Not Syncing/Refreshing

Hello, I'm currently helping a family member with some tech issues and I've fixed most of them however there seem to be two issues I can't solve (technically 1 now because the other seems to have solved itself but it might be related):

Before we start I'd like to point out that, while I know my way around a PC pretty well, I have absolutely no clue about anything web/email hosting or networking related.

1 - The "Fixed" issue:

My family member has both a hotmail account and an email account (and website) hosted through Exclusive Hosting, which itself uses something called Roundcube as a webmail client (?). She uses mainly that non-Hotmail email for business, however, her clients have told her for about a week now that when they try to email her there they get an error. They never send her the error though and every time I tried emailing her (through gmail) it works though, however, I did get this error twice today when emailing her from her own Hotmail (my gmail had worked just a couple of minutes earlier though):

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: <Her Email> host <IP> [<IP>] SMTP error from remote mail server after RCPT TO:<Her Email>: 550 relay not permitted

Then it started randomly working again after I messed with catch-all inbox and blacklist settings in her mail server. Returning them to how they were when it wasn't working though doesn't unfix it, so I'm not sure what's the cause of the fix. Googling for this error brings a lot of results but none that seem to apply (I can't for the life of my find anything remotely related to SMTP, any logs, or anything).

2 - The current issue:

That same email account she accesses through her domain's email website is also linked to her Hotmail account which she accesses through outlook.com, however, there's very strange behavior going on: She can only receive emails when first linking the account. Even just going into Settings and manually refreshing doesn't work, you need to edit the linked account, put the username and password back in, and then save for her inbox refresh... Once. I've tried linking through both POP and IMAP (both of which the host gives all information for) but it's always the same behavior.

The weird thing is that it is possible to send emails from that external email through Outlook, meaning that it is connected, and the address is receiving emails (you can see them when accessing through the host's website), so it seems like the issue is just Outlook simply refusing to sync up after syncing up the first time right after the "set up."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Asus RT-AC1750 is forcing me to change default settings and I don't want to.

I just reset an asus router and when I login with the default credentials it won't let me into the settings without changing the username and password which I want to not do. How can I get past their BS?

A while ago I was having RAM issues so I moved them in different slots until the issues went away. But now a few weeks later my 8GB of ram seems to be filling up from using Firefox and a small games when before it would handle this just fine.

My Mobo is a Gigabyte ga-b75m-d3h. It's at least 5 years old so it might simply be showing it's age.

I'm also running Windows 7 Pro if that matters.
