Laptop not working with monitor!

Hello reddit,

I have an extremely confusing issue. I cannot get my laptop (Acer Aspire S5) to connect with my monitor (Samsung S24D390HL) through HDMI

My laptop connects with other monitors/tv's just fine, and my monitor will connect with other laptops. I've switched the HDMI cable out a number of times. The pair also used to work together in the past. It seems they both acknowledge when the cable is plugged in (this is what my display settings look like https://imgur.com/xMpLFHl )

I'm out of ideas, anyone have an idea on what's going on?

Samsung monitor flashes an image, before black screen

I have a Samsung monitor that, after I boot my pc, will flash an image of the desktop before going black. This will occur again if I turn the screen on and off. This only happens intermittently.

I can resolve this issue by removing the HDMI cable and waiting for the "RBG" image to appear before reconnecting (although this doesn't always work). The same issue happens with different HDMI cables and when using a laptop in place of my PC. Can I fix my monitor?

Help me get WiFi on my cell?

My cellphone says "connected, no internet." I promise I have tried to figure this out myself but I just don't know what I am doing and need some guidance.

I have a linksys router, and an android running 7.1.1. I set the phone to have a static IP and then I put in my IP and all that stuff but that hasn't fixed the problem. I even tried watching a video online but his router wasn't like mine and I couldn't figure out where to change the settings he was changing.

Please help me. This is so frustrating. I can provide more details if you need them.

Mom just bought a new ASUS laptop. Which of this bloatware should I remove completely or replace with a more resource-efficient alternative?

Mom needs a laptop for her work. Her previous laptop is so slow now after less than 2 years because of all the bloatware. Want to avoid the same problem without having to totally reformat the new laptop and install a fresh windows copy.

Here are screenshots of what's in her new Asus laptop right now. What do you folks recommend we either remove completely or replace with a more resource efficient alternative?

Thanks.

Old socket 775 mobo now dropping video repeatedly, needs BIOS reset to work. Same hardware worked for 3 years, no problem, now happening monthly.

Asus P5QL, Socket 775 board with no on-board video. I've tried a few different old GPUs, both Asus & Nvidia, problem occurs with all cards, IIRC. To fix I just pull the CMOS battery, but a long-term fix eludes me. None of my BIOS settings regard the video so I don't know why going back to the default is required to make it work again, but that is the biggest clue I have.

It's a 9 year old machine and therefore ripe for an upgrade but with an SSD and 8GB RAM it runs Win10 plenty fast for browser-based apps which is all it does, so I'd rather not spend the money if I can help it.

Thanks in advance for any insight or experiences to share.

Hey I’m running a 960 and when I try to connect to a TV over HDMI I get no signal any clue why this would be happening?

Device to stream films from my phone to my tv.

Hi so I’ve recently moved into a new apartment and haven’t got my internet set up and it’ll be a while before I do. I have unlimited data on my phone contract and was wondering if there was a relatively affordable device that I could get for my tv that would allow me to stream what’s playing on my phone or just project/mirror what on my phone to my tv (both would be great) or a good app that would allow me to do it via my phone. I apologise if my terminology isn’t that great. My phone is an iPhone X and my tv is a bush 3d tv that’s a few years old, it supports streaming from pc’s/laptops via programs like Serviio but not from my phone. Thanks in advance.

My PC is making a piercing noise

The noise is like an ultrasound sometime, a grass trimmer or a small laser.

You can hear the noise better when you put your ear closer to the below of the PC or the fan.

What do I do?

My PC is a HP, it didn't had some big accidents or shocks.

[SUGGESTED READING] Official Malware Removal Guide

Official Malware Removal Guide

by: /u/cuddlychops06 for /r/techsupport // Updated: September20th, 2017.

Changelog: 9/20/17 - Updated some screenshots, removed JRT recommendation - see below

If you suspect you are infected with Crypto malware (Cryptowall, Cryptolocker, TeslaCrypt, etc) DO NOT follow this guide! Please make a post instead. Your files are at stake.

Purpose & Scope of this Guide:

This guide is designed to assist you in removing malware from an infected system that successfully boots. If your computer is completely unable to boot due to malware, please make a post, as this guide will not help you. If you perform the following steps exactly as described, this will solve your problem in over 90% of scenarios. That said, not all malware is created equal, and not all malware removal tools are created equal. The tools recommended in this guide were picked because of their high success and low failure rates, measured on a very large scale. However, there will be times that this guide fails in removing malware. If that is the case, please make a post for further assistance, stating that this guide was unsuccessful. It is recommended to only accept advice from a “Trusted” technician. I am writing this guide in layman’s terms so that most people will be able to understand it with ease.

Disclaimer:

The following instructions are recommendations only. You take full responsibility for any steps you choose to perform on your computer. While the following recommendations are performed without issue on countless machines, there is always a risk of damaging your Operating System or experiencing data loss on any machine. It is solely YOUR responsibility to save all work and back up any and all important data on your system before proceeding. Also note that once a computer has been compromised with malware, it should not be considered clean until a complete reformat has taken place.

Malware Remediation Steps:

Before proceeding, go into your browser’s extensions and remove all suspicious items. Also go into your browser’s settings and remove any default search providers and unusual homepages. If you are unsure how to do this, proceed to Step 1.

Download and run the following tools in this order. Run all tools unless otherwise instructed. All tools should be run in Normal Mode (not Safe Mode) unless you are unable to boot Normal Mode, or the scans fail in Normal Mode. All tools must be run under an Administrator account. Do not remove any tool-generated logs in the event a helper needs you to post them to further assist you.

1) Run rkill.com. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to finish. Do not reboot when done.

  • Kills running malicious processes

  • Removes policies in the registry that prevent normal OS operation

  • Repairs file extension hijacks

2) Download an updated copy Malwarebytes 3.0. Turn on the “Scan for Rootkits” option. Then, run a “Scan

  • Successfully removes the vast majority of infections
  • Has an industry-leading built-in rootkit/bootkit scanning engine
  • Has built-in repair tools to fix damage done by malware

3) Run Malwarebytes ADWCleaner using the “Scan” option.

  • Removes majority of adware, PuPs, Toolbars, and Browser hijacks
  • Fixes proxy settings changed by malware
  • Removes certain non-default browser settings

NOTE: It is no longer necessary to run JRT. The JRT definitions have been rolled into ADWCleaner by Malwarebytes. JRT no longer provides additional benefit.

Optional, Advanced Step (only run if previous tools fail to solve problem):

4) Run Sophos HitmanPro

  • Here is HitmanPro.

HitmanPro is a phenomenal "second-opinion" malware scanner.

Please note: If malware has prohibited you from browsing the web or downloading files, you can try running the NetAdapter Repair Tool with all options checked which will attempt to restore your internet connection & default browser settings. You may have to download these tools on another computer and move them to a flash drive that you can plug into the infected machine.

Have adware or spyware on your Mac?

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac (formerly Adware Medic). Please make a post if it is unsuccessful.

If you have run all of the above tools successfully, you should be malware-free. If you are still experiencing problems, please make a post in /r/techsupport for further assistance.

Follow-up Steps (highly recommended):

  • Using a computer that has not been infected, change passwords to all your online accounts.
  • Consider enabling two-factor authentication.
  • Install a better anti-virus. See recommendations below.

What is malware?

Malware is an umbrella term used to refer to a variety of forms of hostile or intrusive software, including computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, scareware, and other malicious programs. It can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. [Source: Wikipedia.com]

How did I get infected?

It is difficult to track down the source of an infection. Most infections are actually given permission to run unknowingly by the user. It is recommended to keep User Account Control turned on and never give access to something you do not trust or did not open. Many other infections come via exploits in your browser or browser plug-ins on websites you visit. Always be very careful what you install. Make sure you trust the source implicitly. When downloading programs, always use the publisher’s website directly.

How to prevent future infections:

Be very careful what you download and install. Keep programs like Java & Flash up-to-date, but do so using their official websites or Ninite installers. Use Unchecky to prevent accidental installation of adware & spyware during product installations. Make sure Windows is kept up-to-date as well. Many Windows updates patch exploits and vulnerabilities in your operating system. Most infections are active because the user has unknowingly given it Administrative permission to install and run. The first line of defense starts with you.

Task Manager says disc usage at 100%. Is my drive failing?

  • ASUS Prebuilt Desktop.
  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz
  • Ram: 8 GB
  • System type: 64 bit operating system, x64 based processor
  • Windows 10 Home, version 1709, OS build 16299.192
  • Forgot to grab the video card specs before I left for work, I can get that later if needed. Recently replaced Radeon something or other.
  • HD specs in screenshots below

A problem I had been noticing recently that seemed to slowly be getting worse. Computer starting to get sluggish. Initially I noticed background processes on task manager maxing out all 8GB of Ram with nothing else running.

Lately I've been on Kerbal Space Program kick and I started noticing problems with gameplay. Game freezes every 1-2 minutes for 5-15 seconds. Super annoying. I turned all the graphics down and the problem persists.

So I decided to try to fix the RAM issue. So I tweaked a few things, following some on line guides. What ended up fixing it was disabling SuperFetch. RAM usage seems like it might be a little high but at least it's not maxed out all the time.

Problem still persisted with the game. At which point I noticed my Disk usage is now stuck at 95-100% at all times. I can't be certain weather or not this was happening along side of my previous RAM issue. I didn't notice, it could have been that I was just preoccupied with the RAM thing because I at least semi understand what's going on there.

So now I've tried a bunch of things, again following online guides. I'll try to list the things I remember here:

  • Temporarily disable Windows Search (nothing)
  • Disable SuperFetch (previously done) fixed RAM issue but not Disc issue.
  • Perform a disckcheck - Tried twice on reboot. Disccheck appears to start but then quit after a few seconds and brings me to the login screen. (nothing)
  • Reset Virtual Memory (nothing)
  • Uninstall Google Chrome (nothing)
  • Advanced windows defender scan (nothing) - My Malwarebytes appears to be expired or something.

Things I have not yet tried:

  • Fixing StorAHCI.sys driver
  • Update device drivers
  • Additional antivirus software scans
  • Re installing Windows 10

I was reading some posts there in /r/techsupport and decided to do some HD scans before proceeding with other things. Windows defender seems to think my device is healthy.

So before i potentially waste my time doing a bunch of other things culminating in the reinstall of Windows 10. Is my drive dying? Is this something that can be repaired? or should I be replacing the hardware.

Thanks in advance for any insight you guys can give. I am a Red Seal Journeyman sloped roofer come see me over at /r/roofing if you need any help troubleshooting your roofing issues.

New Build, beeping sounds coming from CPU?

Description of problem

I've just finished this new build and can constantly hear a beeping noise, I'm sure it's not a mobo speaker type of beep as it appears to be more of coil whine with an added beeping sound right on the CPU.I'm loaded up and in windows and have tried several things but cannot for the life of me work out what it is.

The only other issue was the motherboard only detecting 24GB out of the 32GB RAM, fixed this by re seating 2 sticks not showing up in BIOS and hoped the sound would go away, however it still wants to annoy me.

When this issue began

Today, once starting the computer up for the first time.

Recurring issue

Yes

Date of purchase

N/A

Under Warranty

Yes

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

It's constant, hasn't stopped.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

I've done some necessary steps, updating the bios and trying XMP although have not messed around with any voltage settings as of yet due to wanting to OC once the issue has stopped.

I am experiencing some very odd keyboard language issues.

I have a Corsair K70 Lux RGB Mechanical keyboard (UK Layout). It has always worked fine for me, but recently I have been having some issues with the keyboard language settings. I do not know if the problem is hardware or software related (although I would assume software). Any help would be very much appreciated

Outline of problem:

When I restart my PC the keyboard works fine, all the keys are in the proper place. However, after a few hours of my PC being on I will suddenly notice that the language has switched and the keyboard acts as if it is a US layout. When I check in the windows settings, it states that UK layout is still the setting, and when I look in the corsair utility the UK layout is still selected. However the keyboard continues to behave as if it is a US board. The only fix I can find is to restart my PC and it is not a permanent fix.

CMOS Battery Replacement?

I have an old Dell E4200 laptop that I just pulled out of storage and the CMOS battery seems to be dead. I just pulled the battery out and realized that it's not just a regular battery, it's a rechargeable 210mAh CR2032. Does it have to be replaced by a rechargeable battery specifically, or can I replace it with a normal CR2032?

Network Adapters Issue on HV Server 2008 R2 Enterprise

The Hypervisor has no visible lag on it but network traffic to the VM running on it is exceptionally slow until we restart the whole Hypervisor.

This behavior where a duplicate set of adapters is created and quickly switches between public and private network types and is be seen under network adapters when the slowness is reported.

https://share.rtechsupport.org/ServerProblem.gif

I am just wondering if anybody else has ever seen anything like it

EDIT: The two adapters affected are the onboard NIC's and the PCI NIC seems to be unaffected.

Learn with Google AI: Making ML education available to everyone

During college, while doing a geophysics internship aboard an oil rig, I realized that software was the future—so I switched my major to computer science. After more than a decade working at Google, I had a similar moment where I realized that AI is the future of computer science. Today, I lead Google’s machine learning education effort, in the hope of making AI and its benefits accessible to everyone.

AI can solve complex problems and has the potential to transform entire industries, which means it's crucial that AI reflect a diverse range of human perspectives and needs. That’s why part of Google AI’s mission is to help anyone interested in machine learning succeed—from researchers, to developers and companies, to students like Abu.

To help everyone understand how AI can solve challenging problems, we’ve created a resource called Learn with Google AI. This site provides ways to learn about core ML concepts, develop and hone your ML skills, and apply ML to real-world problems. From deep learning experts looking for advanced tutorials and materials on TensorFlow, to “curious cats” who want to take their first steps with AI, anyone looking for educational content from ML experts at Google can find it here.

Learn with Google AI also features a new, free course called Machine Learning Crash Course (MLCC). The course provides exercises, interactive visualizations, and instructional videos that anyone can use to learn and practice ML concepts.

Our engineering education team originally developed this fast-paced, practical introduction to ML fundamentals for Googlers. So far, more than 18,000 Googlers have enrolled in MLCC, applying lessons from the course to enhance camera calibration for Daydream devices, build virtual reality for Google Earth, and improve streaming quality at YouTube. MLCC's success at Google inspired us to make it available to everyone.

There’s more to come from Learn with Google AI, including additional courses and documentation. We’re excited to help everyone learn more about AI.

Internet seems to randomly stop working from a few seconds to a minute over an ethernet connection

So if I am gaming while connected to discord, my internet inexplicably freezes for a few seconds. During this time if I browse the internet I get a "Device isn't connected to the internet" prompt.

I feel like this maybe packet loss, but I am not sure. This happens while my family is using the internet over the same router but they use it through wifi. Haven't been able to play due to the horrible lag. Btw the games are Paladins and Fortnite. Warframe is another game I play, but that seems to be fine.

If I believe Windows 10 may be ruining an installation because it thinks there are files worth the defender trying to remove or quarantine, how do I stop that from happening?

I keep getting an "I keep getting at "0xc00007b" error that I've tried every fix on the internet for. Nothing has worked.

So as one last desperate attempt I wanted to see if maybe making absolutely sure windows does nothing to fuck my installation or files, it would work. How do I get Windows 10 to NOT block any files during an installation, or even after, and none from other folders being transferred to said install folder without getting quarantined or something?

Secondary HDD suddenly not recognised anymore

It started happening a few days ago when all files from the HDD started showing up as dead shortcuts on my desktop. The first time I solved the problem by unplugging the hard drive, plugging it back in and restarting, but the second time this didnt work.

Heres what I know:

  • You can still boot the PC up no problem, the only difference is the missing Drive in the HDD section of Windows 7

  • You can recognise the problem will occur as soon as you boot the PC. Booting is stuck for AGES on the screen with the windows logo. This has happened every time the problem occured.

  • I'm not exactly sure why, but some System functions dont work either. I've tried opening disk management, only to be greeted by the error message: "The Path doesnt exist".

This is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/SafroAmurai/saved/pmrwrH

Testing hardware (screen condition/ connection in particular) on a Samsung Galaxy S6.

I'm thinking of buying a Galaxy S6 second hand. The seller has informed me the screen 'goes to black sometimes' and 'the screen flickers sometimes'

The phone has recently been fitted with a new battery by a "technician". I think there may be a bad connection between the board and the screen or maybe the screen is defective.

Is there a way of testing the hardware, in particular the connection, without opening up the phone?

I have read about the *#0# code but this doesn't allow for checking of connections I think.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Recovered files - jumbled, unorganised - serious volume. Help!

Hi, this is my first reddit post so I hope i've got this right posting this here.

Many years ago when I was a lot smarter I had a windows laptop harddrive die on me. The only hard drive in the machine, of course. I had a desktop and when the laptop fellover i figured this shouldn't be TOO difficult to recover... and thus I managed to take it apart, buy a caddy and recover a shed load of data which i have on a hard drive.

I'm in the process of going fully cloud and trying to get rid of these hard drives. I've gone through with various bits of software to remove and group images and videos and really i'm left with a shit load of .txt and .doc files along with a few excel sheets which I am currently opening one by one to examine.

This is getting me no-where fast.

There are thousands of docs.

I'm that anal kind of person that does kind of want to explore everything here in case i missed something. I was a keen notepad user for jotting down notes and what not and i'm an annoyingly zealous filekeeper, so i will end up going through them one by one if it kills me: but i'd rather not.

Does anyone have any interesting suggestions or ideas as to how we might overcome this issue?

I know full well the majority of these docs are spurious! :(

I'm on a windows ten laptop and my nerd level is intermediate.

Two-Factor authentication for Windows/Mac?

I really, really like two-factor authentication and want to use it on everything I possibly can. Can anyone recommend a relatively light-weight system to implement two-factor authentication for logging into my actual PC proper, or my Mac laptop?

Would implementing this actually help protect my files from being compromised, or would that only feasibly protect me from nefarious Remote Access? If I'm just hoping to make sure my files are secure, is a good firewall and strong cybersecurity program (I already use BitDefender) my best bet?

Please and thank you.

I have a partitioned SSD. Half EXT4 half NTFS. Want to clean install Windows on the whole thing. Best way? Also don't want to lose my Windows product key.

I can probably find a way to do this, but I want to make sure I do it right the first time. One partition is running Ubuntu on an EXT4 partition and the other is Windows 10 in an NTFS partition.

Windows can't read EXT4, so it isn't as simple as reinstalling Windows and deleting the other partition and reformatting in the install wizard.

I thought of running Ubuntu from a flash drive and deleting the SSD partition that way. Would this be the best way? Or install some EXT4 support program on Windows?

Also, will I lose my Windows 10 product key?

Thanks in advance!

Got a pop-up on Google Chrome Images suggesting malware. Little freaked out.

I was browsing Google Images for an image/quote to use for a PowerPoint when I clicked on an image and it gave me a red screen saying something about possible malware on that site and had the option of "go back to safety" which I clicked. I've never had this happen and I'm a little confused. I didn't download any picture but I'd still like to know (1) What was that? (2) Do I need to be worried? I use a 2015 MacBook Air 11", and I've looked around to see if I can find an answer but I couldn't really find anything, and my tech support guy isn't answering my calls. I'm just a little freaked out as I've never had this happen

Computer crashing while gaming, makes odd high pitched sound when launching certain games, etc

So I built myself a gaming PC in December, and it's been working without any issues, up until now. It's crashed twice in about three days while gaming, it's been making a high pitched whining sound when launching certain games, and today when starting up it said "scanning and repairing C: drive".

My GPU and CPU temps are fine, both when idle and gaming, I turn off my PC whenever I'm finished using it, I don't download or torrent off it, and drivers are up to date idk what's wrong.

Is there anyway to run diagnostics to see what the issue might be?

New Ryzen 2200G build with no post or beeps

Hey guys, So I built a Ryzen 2200G in a Fractal Core 1000 case with an ASUS-B350M-Plus Motherboard. I bought G.Skill 2666 2x 4 GB RAM, Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB m.2, 1 TB Seagate Enterprise Drive, Windows 10 Home 64-bit, EVGA 600 Watt Bronze PSU, ASUS DVD-RW, and a cheap Bytec Card Reader.

I can not get the system to post or display. I have unplugged everything that isn't necessary, USB headers, Sata cables, etc. with no change. I threw in a brand new GT 710, no display. I reseated the CPU thinking maybe I screwed it up, no dice. I removed the m.2, nope. I installed the speaker both ways, cause I couldn't see the + marked in the manual or the board and regardless I still get no beeps. If I take out the RAM, no beeps. If I switch the RAM with G.Skill 2400 2x 4 GB kit still no post. If I just put in one stick of either, no post no beeps. I get lights and fans and NOTHING else.

I think I need to flash the bios or the motherboard is fried... All the parts are brand spanking new from neweggbusiness and I work in a Tech Shop so I can get new parts and such fairly quickly but dang... this sucks. Hoping maybe someone can help shed some light so I know what to try next. I just ordered a R5 1500X for stock for our shop sooo I am going to try that when it comes in. I am also just leaving it powered on to see if maybe the post will take time but it's been about 10 minutes with nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Can't install Steam games on SSD.

Hello fellow redditors, I am having a very weird problem that I can't seem to find the solution to. Whenever I try to install any game from steam onto my SSD, it will always give me this error, but I can install other games from other drms like Uplay or GOG without a problem, I just can't install any games onto the SSD through Steam.

I have already tried running it as an Adminstartor, and I gave myself full control over the SSD, my SSD is also my boot drive. These were suggestions that worked for other people, but not for me.

I can also install games onto my hard drive through steam without a problem, just not to the SSD. I bought the SSD with the purpose of putting my games on it and I've never been able to do that, lol.

These are my specs

I’m switching from DSL to cable and need to know what to buy and how to set it up.

I am switching from Verizon “High Speed” DSL (3 down/1 up) to Cox Communications (100 down/10 up) cable (I am only getting internet so I should not need a coaxial cable?). Currently I use a router/modem combo that plugs into an outlet, a telephone, and ethernet to my PC. I will need both wireless and wired access to the internet and do not want to rent a router/modem from my ISP. Do I need both a router and modem? Will this require more than the 1 ethernet cable I have right now? Are there any recommended router/modem combos?

New ways to help teams work faster and smarter with G Suite

Move projects forward from one place—Hangouts Chat now available

Google Domains: an easy way to get online

In 2015, we launched Google Domains to help businesses find and buy relevant domains. Here are a few ways we’re helping these companies build, manage and expand their online presence, including a number of key features we recently introduced.

Increased domain name options

Last year, we continued to serve customers by expanding our domain name offerings. Our more than 1.8 million domain registrations now range from traditional, well-known endings like .com, .org, and .net to many newly-released endings including .business, .online, and .design.

Expanded international coverage

At launch, Google Domains was available primarily in the United States. As of today, we are available in 14 countries in addition to the U.S. including: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

One-click integration with G Suite

We recently announced one-click integration with G Suite, allowing businesses to quickly create professional branded email addresses and simultaneously access G Suite’s range of intelligent productivity tools like Docs, Calendar, Google Drive and Hangouts Meet. Benefits also include 30 GB of file storage, and 24/7 customer support. We also introduced simpler domain management settings, allowing for access to be shared among multiple authorized users.

Improved privacy and security

We know privacy is valuable for our users, so, where permitted, we offer WHOIS privacy as the free, default option for new domain registrations. This helps protect against spam and other forms of abuse because personal information is not available publicly.

Additionally, we've invested in making advanced security features easy and accessible to small businesses. For example, all domain registrations are configured with Cloud DNS by default, ensuring the domain name can be accessed quickly by users around the world. DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is another feature that protects domains from attacks that target users or personal information, and can be enabled for free in just one click.

Going forward, we plan to roll out newer, faster search features and integrate with other Google products to make it easier to access the Google services you know and love.

Get started today at Google Domains, and if you have any questions or feedback, please let us know!

16GB RAM (7.95GB Usable) Win10 Ryzen 5

Hello, I’m using a Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB of Patriot Viper Elite 2133MhZ RAM, and a Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 motherboard.

I have successfully booted the computer off of both individual sticks of RAM in DIMM 2. Seemingly neither stick will work in DIMM 1. Both successful boots show 8GB of RAM.

When I put both sticks in the system, I get the readout “16GB RAM (7.95 usable)” in the About This PC section of my computer.

What do I do?

Recommendations for a new email service.

Hi everyone, I apologize if this isn't the right sub. Anyway, I'm looking to make a new email account, and I was wondering if anyone would have any recommendations for the best service. I currently use aol for my main, and it sucks. Half the time it crashes when I try to load it, it's full of ads, it filters good emails I want to get into spam, but leaves emails from addresses I delete all the time in my main mailbox. I was spoofed twice, and now the final straw is that I am trying to change my password. It won't accept my security questions, and the phone number I found to call for help requires a credit card number. I sent an email to their help desk, the message I got said I will hear back within 24 hours, but now it's been days. For a simple password reset.

I was thinking gmail, but I'm not entirely sure I like that you can't full screen the compose window. Plus both my undergrad and grad school emails were gmail, and I have an old account with them for something else, so it'd get confusing having four mailboxes for my gmail.

I use outlook for work, and it's honestly my favorite. Is there any free service that's like that?

What security software should I have on a business computer?

My dad, who's 72, runs a shop and was (until now) almost completely against technology. Due to some new law issues, we are required to have a computer which will be used by a few employees. Since he doesn't understand anything about that, I'm handling most of it, but as many other employees will be using it, I'm afraid someone might mess things up. What are some vital programs and/or configurations I should have to make sure they don't do anything stupid? Also what can I do to restrict their access to social networks like Facebook or Twitter?

It has Windows 7 and medium/low specs.

Edit: Forgot to mention we are a really small business (5 employees) and therefore can not afford high priced software, I'm looking for something preferably free or at least cheap.

Looking for a unstable Wi-Fi solution

Hello, I had to move to another apartment. I'm a student living far from home. Since the owner of this apartment is also the owner of the apartment above, I have to share the wifi with more 5 people. I spoke with the owner and he said that making hole between the apartments is completely out of question. My bedroom is separated from the room (beneath the modem) with a wall. The thing is: - I can have "2 sticks" out of 4 of connection - when I try to play I can get sometimes stable connection, but after some seconds, instability comes after me.

Taking in consideration I can't use my lan cable :'(, is there another solution for me? That I didn't think of? (I just arrived, I wasnt planning to move soo soon after getting here....)

As far as I hear, a second modded (connected by wifi) creates eco, wich is good to extend wifi, but not to play with.

Please, help me figure out the cause of all this BSoDs

Hey everyone thanks for stoping by! Here's my problem... About 3 months ago, I've started having random BSoDs while playing games, browing internet, talking on Discord, etc, it always seems to happen when I try to run something that requires the use of my GPU, more than one time I have seen my screen go black for a few seconds, and then get the "AMD display driver has stopped working, but has been recovered". All of this gets me to believe that my GPU is fauty, I've tried updating Windows, updating my all of my drivers, formating my harddrive, running Memtest to see if Ram was at fault, cleaning my hardware, etc... But nothing works, some days I can go the entire day without a singles bsod, playing some really GPU heavy games, but other days (Like today) I can't even open Youtube without getting a BSoD. I've been saving all of my Minidumps to see if anyone can help me figure this thing out, I'm really thinking on buying a new GPU, but they are really expensive in the country I am in, so this is not something that I can just buy like nothing and see if that solves the problem, I really need to be sure that I am buying the right thing, thank you for your time! Below I will leave my pc specs, and a link to my GDrive with a Rar of my minidumps.

My grandpa is dying, and we can't access his computer

I don't know if this is the right sub to post this (please direct to me a better sub if you know of one) but my grandpa is dying, and we can't access his computer, which has important files like his will among other things, but that much is obvious from the title. The reason we can't access his computer is that we don't know what his password is, and while he is awake and comprehensive enough to respond to questions, he can't move more than nodding or shaking his head, and he can't talk. So our initial idea was to go individual letter by letter until he nodded yes and we would eventually get the password. However, he is too impatient and after twenty minutes, we still had barely gotten anywhere. So is there a way for us to easily get him to be able to tell us what his computer password is? I thought about if there was an app on the ios app store that could use the camera to track his eye movements and allow him to type with his eyes, simlilar to how stephen hawking's text to voice works, but I couldn't find anything. So I need your help reddit. We don't know how long he has left and the sooner we could find out the better.

I have a NAS drive with ~1000 videos on it, is there anyway I can make a front end that filters the videos, then allows the filtered videos to be downloaded in to a zip?

Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong subreddit. This is a work thing that I have been dumped with as I know how to use Excel beyond the sum command which has made me appear to the higher-ups as an IT wizard.

The company has a NAS drive, with ~1000 videos on, they are named like the following: 'DDMMYYYY_Var1_Var2_Var3_Var4.mp4'

The Var's are things like events, locations etc.

What I have been tasked to do is make a front end that filters the files by their Var's, for example videos that took place in London, and then zip and download those files.

The NAS is a QNAP NAS, and has access to the QNAP store which includes such things as MYSql. I'm pretty sure I need to make a database with tags that links to a file, but I have no idea about how to go about making a front end that can filter and download files.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm totally new with this so forgive my ignorance. I really need help in understanding what I'm doing. Also when I try to download a program to the my PC it still installs on the C: drive not D: drive is it because the files that the program made require to be on the main drive with is the C: drive?

PC boots on second try

Hi guys and gals.

So recently (can't exactly date it but it was after a windows update i think) my PC started booting up weirdly. When i press the power button the fans spin up, the screen show a little white line (like in a command prompt) and after 2-3 seconds just shuts down. After that it just boots normally by itself, i get the windows logo and all.

I've tried turning the fast boot off and it hasn't helped, also tried the debugging thing in Windows and it worked fine after that process but happened again on next boot.

No other processes have been affected, everything works perfectly. Could it be a driver issue or a hardware issue?

My specs are:

GPU: GTX 970 Gigabyte G1

RAM: HyperX Fury 8GB DDR3 1866Mhz

CPU: I5-4690

MoBo: Gigabyte Z97P-D3

Thank you very much in advance!

MP4 files corrupt somehow? Screen recording looks fine when viewing in VLC but shrinks to 1/4 of the player with the other 3/4 being green (screenshot included) when viewed in QuickTime or edited in iMovie, also making Premiere crash

Brief backstory: I use Nvidia GeForce Experience to record video (shadowplay?) where I can press a hotkey and it will save the previous 3 minutes of gameplay to an mp4 file on my computer. I like to use this for highlights if something crazy happens in a game.

I had a few clips while playing Battlefield 1 tonight that I was going to cut together in Premiere (which I am a novice at using) to make a little highlight reel to send to a friend. In the preview window when it was paused it had a bunch of weird stuff going on with it being distorted with green overlays or something. When the video was playing it was perfectly fine. Well, Premiere crashed twice and I gave up and decided I'd put the video files on my external and put them on my laptop to cut together in iMovie which I am much more experienced with. After seeing the thumbnail with a bunch of green I was confused and opened the files in QuickTime where I was met with this. I figured maybe it was QuickTime being weird so I put them in iMovie and have the same thing. I then opened the files in VLC and they're perfectly normal, just like they looked when I viewed on my PC in VLC.

TL;DR mp4 files from screen recording are showing up like this in QuickTime and iMovie, and are making Premiere crash (could potentially be a different reason for it crashing) but look completely fine in VLC on both my PC (Windows 10) and on MacOS

Applications for Round 5 of DNI Innovation Fund are now open

Since its introduction in 2015, the Digital News Initiative Innovation Fund has offered more than €90 million to more than 460 ambitious projects in digital journalism, across 29 countries. The fund, our €150 million commitment to supporting innovation in the European news industry, is designed to provide no-strings-attached funding to those in the news industry looking for some room—and budget—to experiment. Today the DNI Innovation Fund is open for a fifth round of applications—the deadline to apply is April 9, 2018.

How the Fund works

The Fund is open to established publishers, online-only players, news startups, collaborative partnerships and individuals based in the EU and EFTA countries. There are three categories of funding available: Prototype (up to €50k of funding), Medium (up to €300k of funding) and Large (between €300k and €1 million in funding). For more information on eligible projects, criteria and funding, see our website.

We’re looking for projects that demonstrate new thinking in the practice of digital journalism, support the development of new business models, or even change the way people consume digital news. Projects can be highly experimental, but must have well-defined goals and have a significant digital component. Successful projects will show innovation and have a positive impact on the production of original digital journalism and on the long-term sustainability of the news business.

New for Round 5: Diversifying revenue streams

As with Round 4, all Medium and Large track applications will need to demonstrate that they have a monetisation component within the idea to be eligible. This year, we’re also looking for ideas outside of the well-known approaches around paywalls. So in Round 5 we welcome a range of experimental and innovative approaches which diversify revenue streams.

Apply now

See the DNI Innovation Fund website for full details and and application forms. Applications must be made in English by April 9, 2018 at 23.59 CEST. We’ll announce recipients by mid July.

New approaches have never been more needed so it’s time to experiment, innovate and try something new. We’re ready and waiting to help you bring your ideas to reality—submit your applications now!

Windows 10 peripheral device failure

Today when I turned on my computer it immediately started to install the driver software for my mouse and keyboard, which I thought was odd, because they should already be installed... It will claim to have successfully installed the keyboard driver, even though it's totally unresponsive, and the mouse is an even stranger case, where it continuously makes the "usb connected" and then immediately "usb disconnected" noises over and over again until I unplug the mouse, meanwhile it's flashing away and the "installing driver software notification keeps popping up.

When I view the device manager, the mouse will appear on the list for a second and then disappear the same way, in a constant cycle. I've tried finding the driver software online to download it manually with no luck.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled the usb drivers hoping that would help, no luck there either. An attempt to try a different keyboard and a different mouse yielded the same results. I'm really at a loss.

My computer didn't update recently and everything was fine a couple of days ago. I know the usb ports are working because the computer responds when I plug things in, it just does it in an erratic manner. I haven't downloaded anything or dropped the computer or made any significant changes to it. This is really driving me nuts, so if anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it!

(Computer is a dell latitude e6330 with plenty of ram and memory and has had no major issues. it's refurbished, but it's been fine for over a year and all of this just started today.)

Battery health?

I’m kinda new to the whole Reddit thing and I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this question but it’s tech, isn’t it:

I’ve been looking around for quite some time on internet now for the best way to keep your (lithium ion) battery healthy

Should I drain it to 0% and 100% every time? (So the battery ‘knows’ it’s full and empty position so it doesn’t shut off midway?)

Should I let it be charged to 100% all day? (So it’ll have less cycles) Only from 20% to 80%? (So there is less stress on the battery?)

Everyone is saying something different. I’d like a clear answer please because (ofcourse) I want the battery to last as long as possible and since I use my phone multiple hours a day (8 or even more) it would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Laptop screen will not turn on after windows 10 install

Firstly thank you all in advance for any help. The laptop in question is an Alienware 13 r2, I had been operating in linux for a while and decided to switch back to Windows 10 using a bootable usb with an official Windows 10 copy, everything installed perfectly fine and loaded up excellently, I used iobits driver booster pro to update all drivers but when I restarted the computer it turned off fine but when turning on all the keyboard lights lit up like normal but the screen stayed completely off, black and after waiting over an hour with no response I forceably turned it off and back on with the same results multiple times. Now just this morning when trying again, the screen stayed black for like 10 minutes, then it turned on like normal but couldn't load Windows. Now it's back to the original problem of the screen just not turning on at all. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you all in advance

What cable should I use to record audio output from one device on my phone?

Hi.

Supposing I need to record a radio transmition, how could I record it using my phone? My portable radio have headphones output... is there a way or cable to take the headphone output and use it as input on the iPhone? It doesn't feature the headphone jack anymore, so I'd have to use the adapter, but if impossible, I suppose I could get an iPod Touch and use it there.

Does anyone know a way to make this work? Thank you very much

I've finished setting up my computer for 1000mb speeds. Right now the WAN connection is showing just over 950mb. My internal LAN connection from the computer to the router is negotiating 100mb connection no matter what I do. It's a 1000mb NIC and a cat 7 cable straight from the router to my PC. It shouldn't be negotiating 100mb. I've tried auto-neg on one side then 1000mb on the other, vise-versa, and both at 1000mb neg. All of the above result in a 100mb negotiation from the router's perspective. What is going wrong here.. I'm at a loss.

Lets get these out of the way since I know they're coming..

No the cable is not bad.

The NIC has the latest drivers

Each is has been set to auto negotiate and/or 1000mb neg.

(Neither worked)

Stuff:

FiOS Gig + Quantum Router

NVIDIA - Choppy video playback and gaming microstutter

Hello, I have a small problem that suddenly appeared with my video and game and I have no idea why.

When I play video on youtube, skip to some part or click on different tab and return back, sometimes the screen freezes, audio is fine, then it sometimes catches up after a while and looks like something out of the brokengifs subreddit. Same with 360° videos, they look very choppy, much more when moving the screen. With games, even tho I don't play many, Rainbow 6 Siege has around 45 fps and stutters when moving with mouse and drops fps unless set on above normal priority in the task manager, then it gets over 60 and doesn't stutter, altho sometimes the game freezes for a second altogether, which sucks, because it used to be buttery smooth.

My GPU is GTX 1050 Ti.

I tried to update the drivers, looked for help online but nothing seems to fix the problem. If anyone knows any solution to this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Prevent anything to get stored on a particular hard drive

I run a 120GB ssd as boot drive on my pc and sometimes I accidentally store stuff there. Is there an easy way to prevent anything to be stored on a particular drive? I want to keep my boot drive clean for simplicity and speed.

Downloaded one of those Office 365 phishing docs onto my phone only (no desktops), but didn't open it in Word or enable any macros. Am I okay?

Got one of these spear phishing attacks from a business colleague - it was a reply to an email chain, blah blah blah, told me to see the attachment, basically a textbook example of this:

https://blog.barkly.com/ursnif-banking-trojan-spear-phishing-attacks

The attachment was just a page that said it was created on an online version of Office 365 and that I had to enable editing.

Of course I thought it was strange & didn't download it or open it on my laptop, but foolishly previewed it on my phone's file manager to see if it would display differently.

Never opened it in Word, and deleted it from my phone immediately, but it took a full 24 hours for Gmail to flag the attachment as containing a virus and to disable downloads.

I have an Android phone. Scanned my phone 3x over with Kaspersky, Avast, Malwarebytes, didn't find any problems. Changed my email password anyway.

My question is:

  • Would simply downloading it onto my phone have been enough to trigger any virus within? Gmail didn't say what kind of virus it was, just that it existed and that subsequent downloads were disabled.
  • Would it only have harmed me if I had enabled editing/macros?
  • Anything else I'm missing?

Thanks!

Problems with a particular computer/display pairing.

Computer: Dell Lattitude 7480
Display Driver: Intel HD Graphics 630
Display: Vizio E60-E3

I'm having a problem with one particular computer refusing to display on one particular display through HDMI. The computer has no issue with other displays I've tried. Other computers have no issue with this particular display.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver. I've tried a number of different inputs and cables. I've messed around with resolution and refresh rate settings. I've switched between Duplicate, Extend, PC Screen Only, and Second Display Only modes to no avail. Nothing seems to cause this display to work for this computer.

The computer actually recognizes that it is connected to the display. It shows the correct native resolution and everything. The display itself, however, says that there is no input.

If you have any ideas, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks.

Why can't I see my own 5G network but I can see my neighbour's?

So I'm using a desktop with a tp-link wifi adapter, I turned on my 5G network and try to see if I can connect on my desktop, but I'm unable to see the ssid of it (regular ssid +5g at end), but I can see my neighbour's regular 2.4g and 5g, both on 802.11n

I've tried setting my 5g as 802.11n and 802.11ac, but no avail.

Any ideas?

Trying to find a firmware update for an old OCZ Revodrive X2, but Toshiba bought OCZ and the old support forums are down.

The old OCZ support forums no longer exist, and Toshiba does not offer the firmware updates for these old cards. I've scoured Google trying to find an archive of the forum, or the firmware updates somewhere, but have been unable to find them.

Does anyone happen to have this, or can me point me somewhere better to ask about it? I'm particularly looking for the Linux Live CD with firmware update, but I'll take what I can get.

Windows Service Start Failure

Fresh install of Windows 10 on a brand new Dells and I've been getting this popup on a couple of the computers and can't seem to get rid of it:

"Cannot start service from the command line or a debugger. A Windows Service must first be installed (using installutil.exe) and then with the ServerExplorer, Windows Services Administrative tool or the NET START command."

I'm stuck because every time I Google the issue, the forums discuss how to fix problems within apps/programs they've been coding and not how to resolve the issue when there's no coding involved.

[Before any "Well that's what you get for buying Dell" comments: these are company computers and we have a contract with Dell, so my hands are tied on that one]

Google Photos is squishing my photos

Description of problem

Hey everyone,Both me and my wife have for years been taking photos with our phones, cameras and so on. Mostly in 4:3 so, when uploading them to Google Photos we always crop them to 16:9 and usually use Auto Awesome to make the photos prettier.Today something strange started happening. We uploaded 4-5 photos of our cat doing cute weird cat things, and applied the Auto Awesome and 16:9 crop as usual, put it on his album and everything was great. What wasn't great was that i got a notification that someone in my family had seen the newest photos in the album (we share our albums with family cause we live a few countries away) and somehow the photos got squished and are looking fat, in between 16:9 and 4:3. Upon zooming even the tiniest bit it fixes it, but it will display wrongly (squished and widened) online and on the phone.I can provide an image to show what i mean later.

Other relevant info

If i don't add any of those photos to a shared album, even if i did crop them they stay fine the way they should be, they only squish when added to a shared album and then seen by someone. This did not happen to the 5000 photos and albums that we have, it only started happening today so i am not sure what is happening exactly

When this issue began

Today

Recurring issue

Yes

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Upload photos, add to album, edit them (crop and auto awesome), share with someone, upon someone seeing the album the photos squish

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

Re-uploading photos, changing the filters (using different and not using at all), not adding to an album that's shared and so on.

How can I mirror a phone screen to a touch monitor and still be able to use a bluetooth lock?

My situation is this:

I need to either emulate, mirror or link a phone to a 55" touch screen monitor (not yet purchased). The touch screen monitor needs to be able to access an application that involves Bluetooth devices (like home locks), so the user experience would go like this: I walk up to the large touch monitor, click the app, sign in, then lock/unlock a bluetooth lock. Basically like an absurdly oversized phone.

I'm looking for recommendations on how to pull this off such as what types of connectors, specific requirements for the 55" monitor, and other peripheral devices i.e. phone/laptop, I would need. Cost is a non-issue, and I would greatly appreciate any and all help provided!!

Thanks!

Will i be able to get max output from an M.2 960 evo ssd by using this adapter on my Z97 motherboard?

I have an Asus z97 maximus 7 hero motherboard and i'm purchasing a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 500GB SSD. I read on forums that since my mobo is older, it has PCIE 2 slot and to get max performance from the SSD, i will need an adapter. My brother has an x99 asus board and I checked the box today and found an Asus Hyper M.2 X4 Mini Card inside. So if i insert the ssd inside the card and then put it in my PC, will i be able to get full speed from the SSD? Using DMZ on an Xbox One?

I have been having insane issues with my ISP since I moved into my apartment complex. It is technically student living which means all utilities are supplied by the complex owners meaning I cannot change providers.

On top of the terrible speeds, consistent (and I mean by the minute) brown outs, and no permanent tech guy in our area, my room was also not given an Ethernet port because that is how they decided to install our access point. We have no port in our living room - I tried splitting my roommates but his port is broken.

Finally our third roommate has moved out and i have installed my router for the first time since living here via his port. Now I am having an issue with double natting. I can not bypass or bridge our access point so I was wondering if their would be signifigant harm or benefit to putting my xbox on DMZ through my router - or using my router as an access point with my xbox's IP.

Got BSOD, now PC bootloops on POST, can't access BIOS

EDIT: OK, so this seems pretty silly, but I disconnected a USB hub from the PC and it decided to boot normally. I'm going to do some further testing with this, because I'm not sure how a USB hub that has otherwise been working normally for years would suddenly take down my entire PC, but hey, at least I didn't have to spend any money to fix the problem!

Original post:

Windows 10

EVGA GTX 1080

i7 6700K

ASUS Maximus Hero VIII

Was using the PC normally, not playing any games or anything, and got a sudden BSOD that indicated dxgmms2.sys was the problem. Took about 3 minutes to log the crash, then rebooted... but it won't get past the initial screen. I get picture on the screen, keyboard lights up, CPU fan comes on, but the machine won't allow me to access the BIOS. There is one single "BEEP" during POST, which I believe indicates normal operation. I tried taking out the GPU and the problem persisted. I also tried pressing the CLR_CMOS button, but also to no avail.

The overall build is only a couple years old, and the PSU is under a year old.

One other thing of note is that I used to hear an audible, singular "click" when the PC booted, which I'm guessing was happening when giving power to the CPU, but I don't hear that now.

Something is blocking me

Hello, I was having some issues with connecting to websites. I was wanting to download some RATs for testing on my own VMs and house usage. I asked a subreddit to guide me on whether a website (rekings.com) was safe to download from and if the RATs on it where good. I was advised to do it on a VM, so I did so. I went on to my VM and went on to the website, to its download page, and I clicked on the RAT software download and for some reason it was taking a long time to load. After a some seconds, I got a connection refused message, so I tried a different software on the same website and still the connection was refused. So I decided to try and completely different website and software, and it still wasnt working with the connection refused or the page didnt load thing. This got me suspicious, so I went on a normal download for Tunnel bear VPN and it worked. Im worried about this. It could not have been my internet provider as they usually display an image and warning about a virus on the page. Anybody know who or what this could be?

DNS only shows windows machines

Hey, we currently have a device we sell that runs an embedded Linux system. That being said we are having these devices register a DHCP address over the network with no issues and currently are pointing these devices to the DNS. Our DHCP is properly forwarding all IP’s to the DNS. However, our devices are not showing in the DNS forward lookup zone. Which they will need to in order for our system to work. Do all records in the DNS forward lookup zone need to be a windows machine? I say this because our iphones are not showing up in the dns. Or is it because they must be added to the domain?

If I manually add a static host (a) address to the lookup zone our device and software function without issues. However, this will cause problems if DHCP ever needs to change the IP address and I don’t want to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

So there's this program called NoMousy that hides the mouse via command lines, now I what I wanted to do was to make a batch file out of a program so that when I open the program the mouse is hidden, and when I exit the program it returns to it's original state.

Zotac GTX 980: fans keep spinning up every few seconds even after power is *disconnected* when HDMI cable is plugged in.

I have a Zotac GTX980.

(I noticed that my GPU fans started to rattle lately.)

This morning, I noticed a regular noise from the fans *while the machine was powered off. I checked, and the GPU fans span up every few seconds, immediately stopping again. It seems that both of them are not synced.

I unplugged the power and switched off the AC, but the fans kept spinning. I unplugged HDMI and now the fans stopped spinning.

  • what causes this?
  • how can I stop this?
  • how likely is it that the constant spinning was undetected and caused the fans to rattle (I fear that they will fail soon :( )
  • is fixing a larger standard fan onto the gpu a valid way to replace the failing fans? (after removing the original fans)

The machine is running Win 7 (so Windows GPU drivers). The screen is a LG MU67. It's powered on; my other (running) machine is plugged into the screen on the other HDMI port.

"Program stopped working" popup... but it still works?

Hi!

Since a couple of months I have this strange problem, that my Win 10 PC x64 starts to pop up messages, which say that program X stopped working. They have no connection to each other ( like browser.exe, blizzard helper. exe, some telemetry data thingies from nvidia, etc) but that they are all x86 Applications.

The strange part is, even though it says, it stopped working, it still works perfectly fine. It just displays this annoying message i have to click away, which appears around every 20 minutes. So thats why I haven't reinstalled windows (yet).

I tried to find the reason by creating dump files, but I couldn't find the root of the problem (also, I am not that experienced with Windows error analysis). The only thing I found out, is that they are all x86 programs. I also didnt find any real solutions googling.

Thanks :)

Windows 10 Fall Creator's update disables... this select quirk (side note: what is this called?)

So to run a long story short Fall Creator's update ruins one incredibly tiny but important to me feature that drives me up a wall with its removal to the point of almost ruining this laptop. The ability to select things in list view with the selection box essentially by the length of file name. That is to say, when multi-selecting, items with longer filenames will be selected, and shorter filenames will not, when using a box to select things. I've attached an image below of what I mean. My question is: on the latest version of Windows 10, is there any way, third party or otherwise, to re-enable this behavior? It's literally the only thing stopping me from keeping windows update on.

As a side note, I know this behavior has a name as I've searched it up before but I can't for the life of me remember what that name is. If anyone here knows, I'd love to know so I can do my own digging if things fall up short.

https://i.imgur.com/498r2fB.png

Note that only certain items are selected, whereas in the windows 10 fall creator's update it treats the entire line as the bounding box for selecting things, rather than the physical length of the filename. Seems minor, I know, but I use it so much that I can't work without it.

Raid 1 degraded on file server - how to fix

tl;dr Windows server degraded non OS hardware raid 1 after disconnecting them. Disks are healthy. Looking on tips on how to proceed to fix this.

Hello.

I've never really worked with Raid much aside from creating software striped raids in Windows 7 to test how it works.

Now I've got a Windows server 2008 file server that has a dedicated raid controller card.

It was really old and in need of a clean up and potential upgrade, so I turned it off, cleaned it up, removed all drives and wrote down their models, capacities, how they are configured and which sata ports they are connected to. Then reassembled it back just as it was before and turned it on.

Thing is, I didn't use a physical monitor for it at first, it never had one, just used RDP. After about two minutes of being unable to ping it I connected a monitor and saw a huge amount of lines flying around the screen, saying "Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "") from file record segment 234123." GIF: https://i.imgur.com/5F8LxFP.gifv (ignore the compression artifacts)

None of those words sounded friendly in the situation so I panicked and hard shut down the PC holding the power button.

After plugging in a keyboard I started it up again and it booted successfully. But in disk management it shows up two separate mirrored drives where a single raid array used to be. I can access both individually and they aren't mirroring anymore.

When rebooting I used ctrl+A hotkey to get into the raid card configuration screen. At first when it starts up it says both drives are healthy and connected. Manage drives option tells me the array is degraded and one of the drives is missing. When browsing other menus both drives still appear.

Pics:

What would be the correct and safe procedure to fix this and rebuild the array without losing data?

Thanks!

Keyboard and Mouse work in BIOS but not windows 10?

I've had this problem happen once before and i thought nothing of it. The keyboard and mouse work perfectly fine in other computers.

The motherboard is an msi h81m-p33

Basically, I left my computer unplugged for a while when I was on vacation. I came back and booted it up, the keyboard lights came on perfectly fine and so does the mouse light. The when the computer gets past the BIOS screen and into the windows screen the mouse and keyboard lights go dark and are no longer recognized..

This is extremely frustrating especially since I can't even get into my computer to do anything.

Any ideas? : /

EDIT: Someone reccomended changing my boot from UEFI + LEGACY to just regular UEFI I'll try it when I get back to the machine can anyone tell me what this does?

USB Stick won't show full storage Win7

I have a Verbatim 8GB Store'n'Go usb stick that is only letting me see and use ~780MB of storage. I've been slowly battling to recover the drive for a year and have run out of ideas. I've tried reformating it through explorer, re-partitioning through diskpart, re-partitioning through bootice, and probably other tools I cannot recall and had no luck. Here are a few screenshots from my results. I've browsed many forums without solutions. Any idea how I could possibly recover this drive to it's factory settings and storage capacity?

Background: I used this drive many years ago in college for projects (mainly Mac OS) and afterwards reformated and once used it for a transfer of xbox data. Since then I haven't used it for storage but I'm fairly certain I removed the xbox data and re-formated it for storage. I may have attempted making a boot disk with rufus at some point on it but I don't think I ever got around to actually trying. Either way, the storage is missing on all systems. When finding the link I noticed it has a "password security feature" available for download? I don't recall ever using such a feature and have never been prompted for a password.

Question regarding Windows 10 activation

So I just installed Windows 10 to my Mac via Bootcamp. I downloaded the ISO from the website, then followed the steps to install it. When it got to the part where it asks for an activation code, I clicked I don't have one, then preceded to select Windows 10 Home as the edition. From what I have read online is that when you do not have a product key, it puts a watermark in the bottom right hand corner and says "Activate Windows" and limits you to not being able to personalize. But I have not had that watermark and I've had the ability to personalize. I have looked online for why this may be and I haven't been able to find anything. If this has already been asked somewhere else, please let me know and I will change the flair. Thanks
