IPhone vs TV (Pretty sure the TV won...)

So my Dad thought he could plug his phone straight into the USB port on the TV and stream Netflix from it. Now he calls me saying his phone doesn't work. He's 6 hours away at a family reunion so I can't actually look at his phone. I'm not the most tech minded person, but is it safe to assume it fried from some sort of power surge? He has an iphone 4 and the tv is a Vizio I believe.
