My Kaspersky antivirus subscription just ran out. I've had it since the day I've bought my computer, but couldn't afford it this year. I have no idea what I'm looking for when getting a different anti-virus (specifically one that's free). Can anyone help?

As the title says. I wanted to post here asking for help, because every "free" antivirus I've checked out thus far is free up until I go to do something, than I need to pay for it. So I have absolutely no idea where to look for this.
