Can't get file-sharing working on Windows 7 and Android

Amazingly, Windows file sharing still doesn't seem to work properly after 10+ years. I shared a folder by using 'advanced sharing'. I tried with both the IP and the hostname. Windows Firewall is completely disabled. I'm using AndSMB or ES file explorer on android. I'm on Wifi. No error messages (server or client), no nothing. Not sure what to do, and I really don't have 3 hours to mess around figuring it out like I did when I was younger. Anyone know what it might be?
