Issue getting second display - driver wont update

Description of problem

Today I logged on my computer, Nvidia alerted me I had an update, I tried to update the driver after failing twice with this error:3D Vision 388.13 failedgraphics driver 388.13 failed3d vision controller driver 369.04 failedPhysX system Software 9.17.0524 - a newer or same version is presentHD audio driver 1.3.35.1 failedI decided to reboot my machine and try again, when rebooted my monitor (benq xl2411) was at 1280 x 1024 resolution and my second display (Dell S2718H) was black. My PC says it cant find a second display (I unplugged and plugged back in still no luck) I tried to re-do the nvidia driver again and it failed with the same error.

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

reboot my machine resets my display settings, also my benq monitor doesnt have an option for 144hz on 60hz

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

re-plugged everything plugged it back in. took my graphics card out and put in a different slot on my mother board. rebooted several times
