Description of problem

Problem description included in pastebin link below as it was too long for reddit http://ift.tt/2iumzQA

Please note again that I'm more interested in a diagnosis as to the extent of the problem than how to actually fix it, in order to know if I need to change more than just the hard drive.

When this issue began

About two weeks ago prior to repairing, yesterday (29th Nov) after repairing, two days after I resumed using it

Recurring issue

Yes

Date of purchase

April 2016. Computer was already 2-3 years old then

Under Warranty

No

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

Either leave the computer running idle for a while, or randomly during normal use, possibly when writing data to the hard drive (pure speculation, especially since I managed to copy over 310 GB to this new hard drive when I got my computer back and it worked perfectly)

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

BEFORE bringing it to the repair shop:

  • MalwareBytes scan (found and deleted a few things)
  • Complete Avira scan (found things but didn't manage to delete them as it froze before the scan was over)
  • Anti-rootkit scan (TDSSKiller), found nothing
  • Loading up restore points (temporarily helped)
  • chkdsk, as well as the automatic hard drive check when Windows starts up (did nothing)
  • sfc /scannow (didn't work, as it said it needed to run a disk check first)
  • The automated Windows recovery process
  • Eventually, reinstalling Windows (see above)
  • Eventually, changing hard drives (see above as the new one might still be defective)
