Desktop icons vanish and rearrange

This has been happening for a while, certain times when I have to restart my pc running Windows 8, I find my desktop completely blank, browsing through Explorer tells me the files are there but just refusing to show up.

Some times when this happens 2-3 icons are there in the top left corner, these icons are files that were recently put there. The way to fix it usually is to move one of those icons and suddenly all of them reappear as one big block on the right side of the screen.

I've been resorted to use a third party "Save Desktop Layout" program to fix this, would really like some help with this?
